Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney delayed a scheduled news conference Friday morning as U.S. Capitol police reportedly made plans to seek an arrest warrant against her for striking a police officer.

McKinney's office says the news conference is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. They say that actor Danny Glover will also be present at the news conference to be held on Howard University's campus in northwest Washington.

McKinney, a Democrat, represents Atlanta suburbs that make up one of Georgia's two black-majority districts. She planned to hold a news conference with her lawyer on Friday at 11 a.m., but an aide in her office said a new time and date for the news conference were being arranged.

The six-term congresswoman is said to have hit a Capitol Police officer in the chest earlier this week when he stopped her from entering the building without going through a metal detector. McKinney said she was not wearing a lapel pin identifying her as a House member, but that she did display her Congressional identification badge.

The charges, if they are filed against her, could include felony assault on a police officer or simple assault, which is a misdemeanor. Before police can make an arrest, the U.S. Attorney's office has to approve the warrant and then notify the U.S. Justice Department because the warrant involves a sitting member of Congress.

U.S. Capitol Police said there is surveillance video of the confrontation between the officer and McKinney, but they say the video will not be released. McKinney released a statement saying she deeply regrets the incident, but was rushing to a meeting when the officer failed to recognize her. "Unfortunately, the Police Officer did not recognize me as a Member of Congress and a confrontation ensued," the statement read.

McKinney said that government security officers often fail to recognize her and treat her like a criminal suspect. Her staff members are defending her by distributing a clip of her from the new film “American Blackout.” As McKinney shows the filmmaker around the capitol grounds, a security officer fails to recognize her at first and stops her.

“That’s just typical of the type of treatment I receive. It’s typical. So, I’m not surprised and I’m not offended,” McKinney said in the film. “Okay. Thank you. Some things never change."

The incident has become the topic of much-heated debate on talk radio and for Democrats and Republicans on the Hill. Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi on Thursday labeled it "a mistake, an unfortunate lack of recognition of a member of Congress." She added that the police officer was not at fault. "I would not make a big deal of this," said Pelosi, D-Calif. Ron Bonjean, spokesman for House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., responded: "How many officers would have to be punched before it becomes a big deal?"

Let me get this right, Cynthia isnt wearing a distinctive Pin on her Lapel that tells Security and all the Capital Hill Police "I'm a Congresswoman", she gets "Upset" that the person who is suppose to protect HER and every member of Congress from "Intruders" (That might possibly try to cause harm to our elected leaders) entering the Halls Of Congress, for her and their protection. This Police Officer sees no Pin, doesnt recognize her, grabs her arm before she enters to make sure she is SUPPOSE to be going in there, then she HITS this Police officer with her cell phone, or whatever, and now SHE is the one claiming Descrimination against a Police Officer doing HIS job? And then to top it off she holds a Press Conference today with Danny Glover, and Harry Belefonte, (Of all people) and says "She is a victim of being in Congress while black."? So the Capital Police are suppose to recognize ALL 400-600 members of Congress ALL the time (Even without wearing their pin?) So Cynthia can assault a Capital Hill Police Officer while doing HIS job, hit him, slap him, and whatever she want's to do to him because SHE was not properly identified, HE wants to make sure SHE is who SHE is, and SHE is claiming "Racial Discrimination"? She should have been arrested on the spot! No checking with the Attorney General, just flat out arrested like anyone else would be had they tried to enter the Capital building without proper Identification! This couldnt have been a stunt for her upcomming film "American Blackout" could it? Just another election ploy? Or maybe the Capital Hill Police should never check ANYONE going into the Halls of Congress EVER again because they might be charged with Discrimination, Intimidation, or what ever defense theory those in Congress can come up with. But let some one go in there and blow themselves up, and see what the Congress would say! "You didnt do enough to protect us", (Capital Hill Police: "We tried, but you guys always claim we are in the wrong")What a DOLT! I hope they arrest her ass!

Citing Salon's publication, government abandons its fight to keep images of abuse secret.

The Bush administration agreed Tuesday to release dozens of disputed photographs and videos of detainee abuse at Abu Ghraib, two weeks after Salon published an official Army criminal archive that included many, if not all, of the same images.

The government's decision ends a nearly two-year legal battle with civil liberties advocates over whether or not the publication of the material would harm national security.

In a filing to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, government lawyers cited Salon's recent publication of the disputed images as the reason for dropping their legal fight.

The Conference Board said its gauge of sentiment rose nearly three points to 105.8 from a revised 103.1 in May. Analysts on average had expected a rise to 104.0 in June.

The improved confidence index came as consumers felt more optimistic about the U.S. labor market. The proportion of consumers saying jobs were "hard to get" in The Conference Board survey declined to 22.6 percent from 24.1 percent.

"This improvement in consumers' mood suggests that business activity and labor market activity will continue to pick up over the next several months," said Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board's Consumer Research Center.

"And with consumers in better spirits, and job concerns remaining relatively steady, there is little reason to expect a dramatic shift in consumers' spending," Franco added.

Consumer spending is the backbone of the U.S. economy, accounting for two-thirds of overall activity, and changes in confidence are seen as a possible precursor to softer or stronger growth.

The Conference Board's confidence index present situation reading rose to 120.7 from 117.8 while its expectations index measure rose to 95.8 from 93.4.

"The numbers are encouraging and suggest that there's still life in the American consumer," said Rick Egelton, senior vice president and chief economist at BMO Financial in Toronto.

"Both the present situation and expectations components were up more than the market had anticipated. The important 'jobs hard-to-get' measure also fell in the month so it was a broad-based improvement on consumer confidence," he said.

Caspar W. Weinberger, President Ronald Reagan's choice to be the fifteenth secretary of defense, was born in San Francisco on 18 August 1917, the son of a lawyer. He received an A.B. degree (1938) and a law degree (1941), both from Harvard. He entered the U.S. Army as a private in 1941, was commissioned, and served in the Pacific theater. At the end of the war he was a captain on General Douglas MacArthur's intelligence staff. Early in life he developed an interest in politics and history, and, during the war years, a special admiration for Winston Churchill, whom he would later cite as an important influence.

Editor’s note: The husband of Christie Coombs of Abington was killed on a plane flown into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. This is her account of watching the sentencing trial of the only person charged in the attacks.

His voice still resonates in my mind. The image of his face is embedded in my brain, alongside the piercing stare and frightening voice of Mohammed Atta, the pilot-hijacker of Flight 11. Although I couldn’t see him clearly on the closed-circuit TV monitor, I got a sense of the hollowness of this man,

I could almost see death in his eyes.

I could certainly feel the hatred that fills his soul.

I heard the low, strangely soft tone of the admitted terrorist as he spewed his contempt for Americans yesterday. Though difficult to understand, he remained uncharacteristically controlled during his four hours on the witness stand. He was respectful of his role as a witness and had obviously learned a lot about witness behavior and etiquette during the last three weeks.

Moussaoui was calculating during his testimony. Every word was well-thought-out, even as he attempted to twist the testimony to his favor. Throughout his testimony in the federal court in Alexandria, Va., he said how he told lies to ‘‘tease Americans’’ or to amuse himself.

Moussaoui, a French citizen, was arrested in August 2001, for an immigration violation.

He says he was part of the planning for the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, in New York and Washington, and lied to FBI agents so the plot could go forward. The jury will decide whether he spends his life in prison or is executed.

Some of us in Boston who had lost loved ones on Sept. 11 had discussed whether we wanted to hear him speak. We fully expected him to be out of control. We were unsure how much of him we could stomach. We all decided to stay, knowing we had a safe place to go (our break room staffed by counselors and caring people from the Mass 9/11 Fund) if we needed to.

Moussaoui took the stand yesterday against the advice of his lawyers, and for perhaps the first time since the trial began, testimony favored the prosecution.

Moussaoui approached the bench slowly, carrying a pad and a cup of water. He asked Judge Leonie Brinkema ‘‘Can I speak?’’ but she didn’t answer and warned him to ‘‘tell the truth.’’

The defense began the questioning, asking him to explain the circumstances of his imprisonment since his Aug. 16, 2001, arrest. He confirmed that he has been in isolation since December 2001.

The line of questioning moved directly into his role, if any, in the Sept. 11 plot. With regard to his signature on ‘‘statement of facts,’’ the defense asked why he signed it ‘‘the 20th Hijacker.’’ He answered ‘‘Why not? Everyone had been referring to me as the 20th hijacker, and it was in a bit of fun.’’

He testified that he was not the 20th hijacker of the Sept. 11 plot, but later said he was to be the pilot of a fifth plane that would fly into the White House that day. He shocked the court and many watching when he said Richard Reid, known as the shoe bomber, was the person assigned to assist him. He said he did not know for sure who the other hijackers would be.

In the 4½ years since Sept. 11, to my own knowledge and that of other victims’ relatives, Moussaoui’s statement was the first one associating him with Reid. It left many of us wondering if Moussaoui was then telling the truth, or just relaying information that might ‘‘amuse’’ Americans or send us in a tailspin.

He also testified that he knew about the World Trade Center attacks, but not in detail.

‘‘I had knowledge that the Twin Towers would be hit,’’ said Moussaoui.

The prosecution helped Moussaoui recall how jubilant he felt on Sept. 11, saying it was ‘‘in one word, gorgeous. America takes its medicine.’’

During a discussion about the death penalty with the defense team, he stated that all Americans wanted him dead because ‘‘every American is my enemy.’’ He also hinted that death at the hands of America could still be considered martyrdom as long as he ‘‘fought to the end’’ as Jihad instructs.

Moussaoui concluded his testimony by saying he was ‘‘grateful to be an al-Qaida member.’’

As we left the courthouse yesterday, we wondered how the jury would perceive Moussaoui’s testimony. Would he be believable to them? Were they thinking, like some of us, that if he was part of the Sept. 11 plot, why didn’t he have more information about his mission less than one month before it was to happen?

Too many open-ended questions leave some of us still wondering if the jury has enough to continue the trial into the death sentence phase. They see it from a different point of view, without the emotional ties that we have.

Our perception of this trial and of Moussaoui is definitely altered by the pain and suffering of the loss we have experienced, and continue to feel each day, but I think we still have a clear understanding of what is right.

WASHINGTON // A former Democratic staffer Who worked for Sen-Chuck Schumer D-NY pleaded guilty today to computer fraud for snooping on Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele.

Under the plea agreement in U.S. District Court, Lauren B. Weiner, 25, avoids jail time, but she has a year to do 150 hours of community service.

-- a Republican running for U.S. Senate -- was notified by Democrats in Washington that a staffer used Steele's Social Security number to obtain his credit report last year. Weiner was fired from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee after the breach was discovered.

Democrats say Steele's credit information was promptly destroyed, but Steele's lawyer, E. Mark Braden, says he wants to know more about why Democrats tapped into Steele's personal financial records.

Proof: Osama Bin Laden Had Contact With Iraq

"Osama Bin Laden Contact With Iraq"

A newly released prewar Iraqi document indicates that an official representative of Saddam Hussein's government met with Osama bin Laden in Sudan on February 19, 1995, after receiving approval from Saddam Hussein. Bin Laden asked that Iraq broadcast the lectures of Suleiman al Ouda, a radical Saudi preacher, and suggested "carrying out joint operations against foreign forces" in Saudi Arabia. According to the document, Saddam's presidency was informed of the details of the meeting on March 4, 1995, and Saddam agreed to dedicate a program for them on the radio. The document states that further "development of the relationship and cooperation between the two parties to be left according to what's open [in the future] based on dialogue and agreement on other ways of cooperation." The Sudanese were informed about the agreement to dedicate the program on the radio.

The report then states that "Saudi opposition figure" bin Laden had to leave Sudan in July 1996 after it was accused of harboring terrorists. It says information indicated he was in Afghanistan. "The relationship with him is still through the Sudanese. We're currently working on activating this relationship through a new channel in light of his current location," it states.

(Editor's Note: This document is handwritten and has no official seal. Although contacts between bin Laden and the Iraqis have been reported in the 9/11 Commission report and elsewhere (e.g., the 9/11 report states "Bin Laden himself met with a senior Iraqi intelligence officer in Khartoum in late 1994 or early 1995) this document indicates the contacts were approved personally by Saddam Hussein.

It also indicates the discussions were substantive, in particular that Bin Laden was proposing an operational relationship, and that the Iraqis were, at a minimum, interested in exploring a potential relationship and prepared to show good faith by broadcasting the speeches of Al Ouda, the radical cleric who was also a Bin Laden mentor.

The document does not establish that the two parties did in fact enter into an operational relationship. Given that the document claims bin Laden was proposing to the Iraqis that they conduct "joint operations against foreign forces" in Saudi Arabia, it is worth noting that eight months after the meeting — on November 13, 1995 — terrorists attacked Saudi National Guard Headquarters in Riyadh, killing 5 U.S. military advisers. The militants later confessed on Saudi TV to having been trained by Osama bin Laden.)

Bikers Stand Guard At Military Funerals

travels the country attending military funerals is experiencing
near-explosive growth, the group's national spokesman
reported today.

The group, which started as a grassroots effort in the fall
in response to protesters who were attending military
funerals, now has 20,000 members in all 50 states, Puerto Rico,
Guam and Germany, Kurt Mayer said in an interview with
American Forces Press Service.

Fifteen thousand members have joined the group during the
past seven weeks alone, he said.

"It's all happening kind of fast. It's amazing the response
we've gotten," Mayer said. "It shows that all this has hit
a raw, patriotic nerve, and we're attracting a
cross-section of America -- everyone from CEOs to coal miners and
aerospace engineers to corner-garage mechanics."

These members, who range in age from 14 to 82, form a loose
perimeter around funeral services and create a "corridor of
honor," hoisting flags along the funeral procession route,
Mayer explained. "It's a very impressive sight to see 100
flags on either side," he said. "There's a wash of
overwhelming emotion."

The Patriot Guard Riders started attending funerals and
forming a line of flags and motorcycles to block people
attending military funerals from having to see protesters who
began appearing at military funerals. But as the group has
grown and more families request the honor cordon, the riders
now attend all funerals of fallen servicemembers when asked,
Mayer said.

Mayer emphasized that the group attends funerals only at
the family's request. "We recognize that this is a very
private affair, and we ensure that the family wants us to be
there and that we're not intruding on their feelings," he
said.

The goal, he said, is to show respect for fallen
servicemembers and "to show a grieving family and a sometimes shocked
community that America still cares."

"The most important thing we can do is let families know
that the nation cares," Don Woodrick, the group's Kentucky
captain, told reporters following a recent memorial service
at Fort Campbell, Ky. "When a total stranger gets on a
motorcycle in the middle of winter and drives 300 miles to hold
a flag, that makes a powerful statement."

"Each of us holding a three-by-five (foot) American flag
(is letting) the family know and providing some confront that
yes, America really does care about their loss," agreed
Jason Wallin, a group member.

"We're just simply Americans doing the right thing," Mayer
said, noting that the effort transcends politics. "We're
completely apolitical," he said. "Some members of our
organization are pro-war and some are completely, completely
against the war. What we have in common is an unwavering respect
for the fallen and the sacrifice they have made."

"The group is made up mostly of motorcyclists who have
served in the military, but it's not a requirement," Mayer
said.

"We don't care what you ride, what your political views
are, or whether you're a 'hawk' or a 'dove,'" according to the
group's Web site. "It is not a requirement that you be a
veteran. It doesn't matter where you're from or what your
income is. You don't even have to ride. The only prerequisite
is respect."

Mayer said the group has received "very, very, very
positive" responses from the families of individuals whose
funerals it has attended. "Without exception, there's a very
heartfelt response," he said.

The organization's Web site has a feature titled "We Get
Letters," which contains - among other testimonials -
expressions of gratitude from the families of fallen
servicemembers.

The family of Marine Lance Cpl. Adam VanAlstine, who was
killed in February by an improvised explosive device in
Ramadi, Iraq, expressed deep appreciation for the group's
participation in his memorial service earlier this month in
Superior, Wisc.

"What an amazing relief and comfort you provided to our
grieving family and friends -- not to mention providing the
coolest and most honorable way to enter a service that any of
us had ever seen," the family wrote following the service.
"Your service to us was a real blessing Please know that

have told me how meaningful the flags were to them; many
shed tears as they drove through the tunnel.

"As for your protecting us from the demonstrators," he
wrote, "I looked for them, but could not see them. I never did
see them."

Wagler loved motorcycles and planned to buy one after
returning from Iraq, the family member wrote. "He won't get to
do that, but he would have loved the tremendous display you
put on. Our family feels inadequate in expressing our
thanks, but please know that we deeply appreciate what you did
for us."

WASHINGTON - After being surprised by her husband's role in the Dubai ports deal, Sen. Hillary Clinton has insisted that Bill Clinton give her "final say" over what he says and does, well-placed sources said.
The former President agreed to give his wife a veto to avoid his habit of making controversial headlines that could hurt her chances of returning to the White House, multiple sources told the Daily News.


"He knows it's Hillary's time now," said an adviser close to both Clintons who expects to play a key role in her likely 2008 presidential campaign.

Hillary Clinton's handlers are keeping a close rein on the former President's schedule to try to prevent another embarrassing screwup like their competing roles in the Dubai ports deal.

While she was blasting the Bush administration for allowing Dubai to run six of the country's ports, he was advising Dubai on how to sell the deal.

"Hillary has final say," said the adviser, and the ex-President's staff has been warned not to do or say anything without running it by the senator's handlers.

"That was true in the White House during the [2000] Senate campaign," recalled another longtime aide who stayed close to the ex-President after he left office. "If he said the sky was blue and she said the sky was purple, then the sky was purple."

Hillary Clinton's aides denied that her husband's comments have been a liability but concede she is calling the shots.

"Since she got elected five years ago and given their hectic schedules, it is more interesting how little there has been of this," said the senator's campaign spokeswoman Ann Lewis, referring to their contradictory statements.

"She is the elected official. She makes the ultimate decisions," Lewis said.

Bill Clinton's spokesman Jay Carson added, "Anyone who says he is doing everything he can to help her get reelected is absolutely right."

The Hillary camp recognizes the 42nd President's enormous political value to her race for the White House.

To boost his spouse's Oval Office bid, the former President is hosting several get-togethers around the country with ex-staffers and is planning some regional town hall meeting and panel discussions to talk about success stories from what Hillary Clinton likes to call "our administration."

Bill Clinton will cite expanding the earned income tax credit and balancing the federal budget, Clinton insiders say. He's also a star attraction at fund-raisers for his wife.

Still, the senator's advisers are trying to put a muzzle on her husband's more controversial comments and actions that have hindered her effort to paint herself as a national security hawk - a crucial part of her political makeover.

The Dubai port controversy was the latest episode that allowed her critics to charge she was being politically duplicitous. Because of their contrasting actions, the Clintons were lampooned by conservatives, and Hillary Clinton faded away as a leading voice of criticism for the ports deal.

The ex-President also sent his spokesman as well as his wife's handlers scrambling when he lashed out at President Bush during a speech in Dubai last November, saying the Iraq war was "a big mistake." Hillary Clinton has supported the war.

Bill Clinton jokingly admits he's a liability. "It's fun to be able to say what you want, and I do that, but I do try to avoid doing anything that complicates Hillary's life," he says in a now-routine line in his public remarks.

The senator's camp knows, however, when it's politically prudent to put her near her husband, like when they visited victims of Hurricane Katrina, the funeral for Coretta Scott King and in Israel at the anniversary of the assassination of Mideast peacemaker Yitzhak Rabin.

Bush Defends Decisions On Iraq War
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush said Tuesday the decision about when to withdraw all U.S. troops from Iraq will fall to future presidents and Iraqi leaders, suggesting that U.S. involvement will continue at least through 2008.

Acknowledging the public's growing unease with the war - and election-year skittishness among fellow Republicans - the president nonetheless vowed to keep U.S. soldiers in the fight.

"If I didn't believe we could succeed, I wouldn't be there. I wouldn't put those kids there," Bush declared.

He also stood by embattled Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld.

"I don't believe he should resign. He's done a fine job. Every war plan looks good on paper until you meet the enemy," he said.

In his second full-blown news conference of the year, Bush sought to ease his political problems by addressing them directly.



"Nobody likes war. It creates a sense of uncertainty in the country," he said. "War creates trauma." He acknowledged that Republicans are worried about their political standing in November.

"There's a certain unease as you head into an election year," Bush told a wide-ranging news conference that lasted nearly an hour.

More than 2,300 Americans have died in three years of war in Iraq. Polls show the public's support of the war and Bush himself have dramatically declined in recent months, jeopardizing the political goodwill he carried out of the 2004 re-election victory.

"I'd say I'm spending that capital on the war," Bush quipped.
When asked about his failed Social Security plan, he simply said: "It didn't get done." But the president defiantly defended his warrantless eavesdropping program, and baited Democrats who suggest that he broke the law.

Calling a censure resolution "needless partisanship," Bush challenged Democrats to go into the November midterm elections in opposition to eavesdropping on suspected terrorists. "They ought to stand up and say, 'The tools we're using to protect the American people should not be used,'" Bush said.

The news conference marked a new push by Bush to confront doubts about his strategy in Iraq. A day earlier, he acknowledged to a sometimes skeptical audience that there was dwindling support for his Iraq policy and that he understood why people were disheartened.

"The terrorists haven't given up. They're tough-minded. They like to kill," he said Tuesday. "There will be more tough fighting ahead."

Later in the news conference, Bush was asked whether there would come a day when no U.S. forces are in Iraq.

"That, of course, is an objective. And that will be decided by future presidents and future governments of Iraq," he said.

Asked if that meant it won't happen on his watch, the president said, "You mean a complete withdrawal? That's a timetable. I can only tell you that I will make decisions on force levels based upon what the commanders on the ground say."

The president said he did not agree with former interim Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi, who told the British Broadcasting Corporation Sunday, "If this is not civil war, then God knows what civil war is."

Bush said others inside and outside Iraq think the nation has stopped short of civil war. "There are other voices coming out of Iraq, by the way, other than Mr. Allawi, who I know by the way - like. A good fellow."

"We all recognized that there is violence, that there is sectarian violence. But the way I look at the situation is, the Iraqis looked and decided not to go into civil war."

Nearly four out of five Americans, including 70 percent of Republicans, believe civil war will break out in Iraq, according to a recent AP-Ipsos poll.

Bush said he's confident of victory in Iraq. "I'm optimistic we'll succeed. If not, I'd pull our troops out," he said, warning that abandoning the nation would be a dangerous mistake.

"So failure in Iraq, which isn't going to happen, would send all kinds of terrible signals to an enemy that wants to hurt us and people who are desperate to change the condition in the broader Middle East," Bush said.

He said he agreed to U.S. talks with Iran to underscore his point that Tehran's attempts to spread sectarian violence or provide support to Iraqi insurgents was unacceptable to the United States.

His opening remarks were designed to steel Americans for more fighting in Iraq and put an optimistic spin on the state of the U.S. economy.

"Productivity is strong. Inflation is contained. Household net worth is at an all-time high," Bush said, crediting his administration's policies.

On Iraq, Bush bristled at a suggestion that he had wanted to wage war against that country since early in his presidency.

"I didn't want war. To assume I wanted war is just flat wrong ... with all due respect," he told a reporter. "No president wants war." To those who say otherwise, "it's simply not true," Bush said.

Asked about former supporters who now oppose him and the war, Bush said he's trying to win them over by "talking realistically to people" about the war and its importance to the nation.

"I can understand how Americans are worried about whether or not we can win," Bush said, adding that most Americans want victory "but they're concerned about whether or not we can win."

Bush scoffed at a question suggesting he should reshuffle or shake up his White House staff to help raise his sagging poll standings. But he did hint that he might bring in an experienced Washington insider to work with a disgruntled Congress.

"I'm not going to announce it right now," Bush said, adding that he's satisfied with the staff he's surrounded himself with.

WASHINGTON, DC—In a press conference on the steps of the Capitol Monday, Congressional Democrats announced that, despite the scandals plaguing the Democrat Party and widespread calls for change in Congress, their party will remain true to its hopeless direction.

"We are entirely capable of bungling this opportunity to regain control of the House and Senate and the trust of the American people," Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said to scattered applause. "It will take some doing, but we're in this for the long and pointless haul."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi reaffirms the Democratic Party’s promise to remain without a plan.


"We can still lose this," Reid added. "All it takes is a little lack of backbone."

"In times like these, when the American public is palpably dismayed with the political status quo, it is crucial that Democrats remain unfocused and defer to the larger, smarter, and better-equipped Republican machine," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said. "If we play our cards right, we will be intimidated to the point of total paralysis."

Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-CT) cited the State and Local levels bungled response to Hurricane Katrina as a model for Democrats.

" Lieberman said. "I'm here to promise that we Democrats will find a way to let you down again like that."

According to Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA), Democrats are not willing to sacrifice their core values—indecision, incoherence, and disorganization—for the sake of short-term electoral gain.

"Don't lose faithlessness, Democrats," Kennedy said as he put his flask back in his jacket. "The next election is ours to lose. To those who say we can't, I say: Remember Michael Dukakis. Remember Al Gore. Remember John Kerry."

Kennedy said that, even if the Democrats were to regain the upper hand in the midterm elections, they would still need to agree on a platform and chart a legislative agenda—an obstacle he called "unacheivable."

"Universal health care, the war in Iraq, civil liberties, a living wage, gun control—we're not even close to contiousness within our own ranks," Kennedy said. "And even if we were, we wouldn't know how to implement that state of contiousness." As he took the flask back out of his jacket.

Democratic Party faithful cheer on their leaders’ resolutely defeatist agenda.


"Some rising stars with leadership potential like [Sen. Barack] Obama (D-IL) and [New York State Attorney General Eliot] Spitzer have emerged, but don't worry: We've still got some infight left in us," Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean screamed. "Over the last decade, we've found a reliably losing formula, and we're sticking with it."

Dean reminded Democratic candidates to "stay on our unclear message, maintain a defensive, reactive posture, and keep an elitist distance from voters."

Political consultant and Democratic operative James Carville said that, if properly disseminated, the message of hopelessness could be the Democrats' most effective tool in more than a decade.

"For the first time in a long time, we're really connecting with the American people, who 48% are comatose," Carville said. "If we can harness that and run on it in '06, I believe we can finish a strong second."

Some have described the situation in Iraq as a tightening noose, noting that "time is not on our side"and that "morale is down." Others have described a "very dangerous" turn of events and are "extremely concerned."

Who are they that have expressed these concerns? In fact, these are the exact words of terrorists discussing Iraq -- Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and his associates -- who are describing their own situation and must be watching with fear the progress that Iraq has made over the past three years.

The terrorists seem to recognize that they are losing in Iraq. I believe that history will show that to be the case.

Consider that in three years Iraq has gone from enduring a brutal dictatorship to electing a provisional government to ratifying a new constitution written by Iraqis to electing a permanent government last December. In each of these elections, the number of voters participating has increased significantly -- from 8.5 million in the January 2005 election to nearly 12 million in the December election -- in defiance of terrorists' threats and attacks.

The terrorists are determined to stoke sectarian tension and are attempting to spark a civil war. But despite the many acts of violence and provocation, the vast majority of Iraqis have shown that they want their country to remain whole and free of ethnic conflict. We saw this last month after the attack on the Shiite shrine in Samarra, when leaders of Iraq's various political parties and religious groups condemned the violence and called for calm.

Operation Swarmer Launched In Iraq

FoxNews Is Reporting:
Coalition forces launched the largest air assault in Iraq since U.S. forces invaded that country in 2003, the U.S. military confirmed Thursday.

The assault was launched in the southern Salah Ad Din province to clear a suspected insurgent operating area southeast of Samarra.

Iraqi and American Troops Prepare For Operation Swarmer

The operation, which began Thursday morning, is expected to continue for several days ahead of the Shiite Muslim holiday. U.S. military commanders say the operation was largely carried out by Iraqi forces based on tips from other Iraqis.

Coalition forces have dubbed the assault "Operation Swarmer," which is an operation consisting of about 1,500 soldiers in all, including the Iraqi Army's 1st Brigade, 4th Division, the 101st Airborne Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team and the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade.

The assault is a combination of air and ground operations involving more than 200 tactical vehicles and more than 50 aircraft also participated in the operation.

According to the Coalition Press Information Center, initial reports indicate that a number of enemy weapons caches have been captured, containing artillery shells, explosives, IED-making materials, and military uniforms. Troops also captured several people, according to CPIC.

Saddam Insists He Is Still President

BAGHDAD, Iraq 3-15-06-- Saddam Hussein

testified Wednesday for the first time at his trial, and the judge closed the court after the ex-dictator's speech calling for Iraqis to end sectarian violence and fight U.S. troops instead.

Even as the judge repeatedly yelled at Saddam to stop making what he called political speeches, the deposed leader read from a prepared text, insisting he was still Iraq's president.

"Let the (Iraqi) people unite and resist the invaders and their backers. Don't fight among yourselves," he said, praising the insurgency. "In my eyes, you are the resistance to the American invasion."

Finally, Chief judge Raouf Abdel-Rahman ordered the session closed to the public, telling journalists to leave the chamber. The delayed video feed also was cut.

According to the article, Saddam's top generals were shocked when he told them that he destroyed his WMD arsenal. Saddam wanted the USA, Iran and other perceived enemies to believe he had WMDs. So we now know why the CIA, British intelligence, and many other countries believed Saddam did possess deadly weapons, because his own generals believed it. Therefore those people who have accused President Bush of lying owe him an apology, do they not? The liars list includes Senators Reid, Edwards, Obama, Durbin, Leahy, Kennedy, Byrd and Dayton; also, Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, Al Sharpton, Howard Dean and a bunch of congressmen. The president should also be getting apologetic notes from at least four New York Times columnists, Ron Reagan Jr., Chevy Chase, Barbra Streisand, Ben Colwin, Jessica Lange, Johnny Depp, and Helen Thomas, just to name a few. Feingold Insists On Censure, Dems Not Enthused

Democrats distanced themselves Monday from Wisconsin Sen. Russell Feingold's effort to censure President Bush over domestic spying, preventing a floor vote that could alienate swing voters.

A day of tough, election-year talk between Feingold and Vice President Dick Cheney ended with Senate leaders sending the matter to the Judiciary Committee.

"I look forward to a full hearing, debate and vote in committee on this important matter," Feingold said in a statement late Monday. "If the Committee fails to consider the resolution expeditiously, I will ask that there be a vote in the full Senate."

Republicans dared Democrats to vote for the proposal.

"Some Democrats in Congress have decided the president is the enemy," Vice President Dick Cheney told a Republican audience in Feingold's home state.

Feingold, a potential presidential candidate, said on the Senate floor, "The president has violated the law and Congress must respond."

"A formal censure by Congress is an appropriate and responsible first step to assure the public that when the president thinks he can violate the law without consequences, Congress has the will to hold him accountable," Feingold said.

Even as he spoke, Democratic leaders held off the immediate vote that Majority Leader Bill Frist requested. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said he didn't know if there ever would be one. Durbin said that Feingold had sought to use the censure resolution "as a catalyst" for thorough hearings and investigations.

The referral averted a debate and a vote that Democrats privately worried would alienate voters who could decide close elections.

Throughout the day, Feingold's fellow Democrats said they understood his frustration but they held back overt support for the resolution.

Several said they wanted first to see the Senate Intelligence Committee finish an investigation of the warrantless wiretapping program that Bush authorized as part of his war on terrorism.

Asked at a news conference whether he would vote for the censure resolution, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada declined to endorse it and said he hadn't read it.

Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., said he had not read it either and wasn't inclined simply to scold the president.

"I'd prefer to see us solve the problem," Lieberman told reporters.

Across the Capitol, reaction was similar. Feingold's censure resolution drew empathy but no outright support from Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Pelosi "understands Sen. Feingold's frustration that the facts about the NSA domestic surveillance program have not been disclosed appropriately to Congress," her office said in a statement. "Both the House and the Senate must fully investigate the program and assign responsibility for any laws that may have been broken."

Feingold's resolution accuses Bush of violating the Constitution and the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

It reads in part:

"Resolved that the United States Senate does hereby censure George W. Bush, president of the United States, and does condemn his unlawful authorization of wiretaps of Americans within the United States without obtaining the court orders required."

The resolution says censuring Bush also is warranted by "his failure to inform the full congressional intelligence committees as required by law, and his efforts to mislead the American people about the authorities relied upon by his administration to conduct wiretaps and about the legality of the program."

The only president ever censured by the Senate was Andrew Jackson, in for removing the nation's money from a private bank in defiance of the Whig-controlled Senate.

In 1999, a censure resolution failed against President Clinton after he was acquitted by the Senate on House impeachment charges that he committed perjury and obstructed justice in the Monica Lewinsky affair.

"This is clearly more serious than what President Clinton was accused of doing," Feingold reporters after his floor speech.

Cheney said Monday, "The outrageous proposition that we ought to protect our enemies' ability to communicate as it plots against America poses a key test of our Democratic leaders."

"The American people already made their decision," Cheney added. "They agree with the president."

George Clooney has a message for Democratic office-holders who voted for the war in Iraq, only to claim later that they'd been misled by President Bush:
"F— you!"

The movie star's argument — directed at the likes of presidential wannabes Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, John Kerry and John Edwards — is actually more nuanced than that.

But not by much.

"The fear of being criticized can be paralyzing," Clooney writes today on Huffingtonpost.com — pumping up the volume after banging the drum of Hollywood liberalism in his Oscar acceptance speech.

"Just look at the way so many Democrats caved in the runup to the war. In 2003, a lot of us were saying, where is the link between Saddam and Bin Laden? What does Iraq have to do with 9/11? We knew it was bulls—.

"Which is why it drives me crazy to hear all these Democrats saying, 'We were misled.' It makes me want to shout, 'F— you, you weren't misled. You were afraid of being called unpatriotic.'"

Clooney exhorts the lily-livered Dems to stop being cowards and put some steel in their spines.

"It's not merely our right to question our government, it's our duty. Whatever the consequences," he lectures.

"We can't demand freedom of speech, then turn around and say, 'But please don't say bad things about us.' You gotta be a grownup and take your hits."

The actor vents frustration that "liberal" has become a dirty word. "Too many people run away from the label. They whisper it like you'd whisper, 'I'm a Nazi.'"

But as for Clooney, "I am a liberal. Fire away," he taunts.

U.N. Staff Union Votes 'No Confidence' in Annan Over Proposed Management Reforms

UNITED NATIONS -- The U.N. Staff Union overwhelmingly voted no confidence in Secretary-General Kofi Annan Thursday over his proposal to radically overhaul U.N. operations.

The union, representing over 5,000 staff at U.N. headquarters, said it was dismayed at many proposals in Annan's blueprint, especially the call to consider outsourcing a variety of U.N. services from translations to billing.

The disappearance of permanent appointments and a new policy on job mobility without job security implied a "fundamental attack against the international civil service," it said.

The resolution said "in the future, all staff may be at risk" and expressed "a statement of no confidence in the secretary-general and his senior management team."

The staff revolt is just the latest in series of problems the U.N. chief has been force to confront in recent months, including heavy criticism of his management in the scandal surrounding the U.N. oil-for-food program for Iraq.

Annan has also struggled to deal with allegations of sexual abuse by U.N. peacekeepers as well as the fallout from corruption charges linked to how the U.N. awards work contracts.

U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric, asked to respond said: "We fully understand that these are unsettling times for the staff but we encourage all staff whether in New York or around the world to read the report fully."

"We look forward to the continuing dialogue we will have with the Staff Union and the discussion that managers will be having with their own staff in each department," he said.

Annan presented his proposal for an overhaul to the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday and urged its 191 members to invest in management reform so the U.N. can help millions of people around the world facing hunger, disease, violence and terrorism.

The management overhaul won initial support from the United States and the European Union. But Annan and his senior team faced strong objections from U.N. staff, especially about outsourcing and job security, at a raucous and contentious meeting Tuesday afternoon.

The resolution was adopted at an emergency meeting of the Staff Union attended by over 500 U.N. employees. Union leaders said it was approved overwhelmingly, with two people voting "no" and fewer than 10 abstentions.

The proposals are a direct response to last year's investigation into the U.N. oil-for-food program which concluded that shoddy management was partly to blame for widespread corruption. The probe cited weaknesses in oversight, accountability, responsibility and structure.

Since the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s, Annan said, the United Nations has been transformed from an organization that primarily held conferences and meetings to a global body engaged in peacekeeping, humanitarian relief efforts, electoral assistance and human rights monitoring.

The Staff Union said it was "gravely dismayed" at this vision, calling the U.N. "the unique forum where all peoples of the world will continue to come together to discuss global issues, verbally and in writing, in all six official languages of the United Nations."

Annan's proposed shakeup would create a mobile civil service and convert 2,500 short-term peacekeeping positions into a new rapid reaction team whose members could be deployed quickly in urgent peacekeeping and political missions.

It would also allow a one-time staff buyout costing about $100,000 per person, modernize the U.N.'s information technology systems, and consider relocating, outsourcing and telecommuting a range of U.N. services including translation, editing, printing, publishing, payroll, medical and staff benefits, and information technology support.

Senior U.N. officials said the management reforms could cost about $500 million, but could eventually lead to savings of about the same amount.

Yes, a standing room only crowd showed up in New Orleans on Wednesday night to see the Hornets lose to the Lakers in the first NBA game in the Big Easy since Hurricane Katrina ravaged the city. And to be sure, Stern and everyone else in and around the NBA had kind things to say about the future of the Hornets in New Orleans.
But then, there is the caveat, a caveat nearly the size of the Grand Canyon.

They don't want to be perceived as taking advantage of the disaster; so they welcome the Hornets for however long they can have them.

Instead, they have sold out nearly every game this entire season, and been in the heart of the playoff race with unexpected effectiveness on the court for coach Byron Scott, a top-notch coach of the year candidate. Then there is Chris Paul, nearly a lock to be named NBA Rookie of the Year. Finally, there will be plenty of support for David West as the NBA's Most Improved Player.

Yes, Oklahoma City loves their Hornets for however long they have them — guaranteed for the rest of this season and for at least 35 games next season, too.

But beyond that... who knows?

Other provisions call for the sharing of information among law enforcement agencies and the intelligence community.

The measure finally cleared Congress this week after a lengthy fight over how to protect civil liberties.

Despite some tough talk coming from a select few Democrats on Capitol Hill regarding defense and the war on terror, it appears that liberals are still liberals, and no amount of spin will change that fact. The latest evidence is a program sponsored by the Congressional Progressive Caucus which calls for $60 billion in cuts to the defense budget. And this is the party that wants to be seen as strong on defense?

According to a report in The Hill, the proposal would take money away from defense and shift it to “humanitarian assistance, social programs, energy conservation, homeland security and deficit reduction.”


“I think it’s time for Congress and the House to talk about the huge amount of tax dollars going for weapons systems designed to fight a Cold War that doesn’t exist,” said Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), co-chairwoman of the 62-member Democratic group. “I don’t think people realize the billions of dollars that are being wasted.”

The first thought that popped into my head was that some Democrats who are trying to change the perception of their party are cringing at this proposal. The Hill story touched on this idea as well, stating:

Some political observers fear that publicizing a Democratic proposal to cut military spending could open Democrats up to criticism that they are weak on security issues. But Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.), the other co-chairwoman of the caucus, argued that the defense spending is not crucial to national defense, noting that a panel of military experts had vetted the Democrats’ plan.

Ok, let’s think about this… defense spending is NOT crucial to national defense??? Can someone please explain that one to me. Perhaps I should contact this panel of military experts who vetted the plan!

The Thursday announcement came just hours after Republican leaders warned President Bush that the House and Senate appeared ready to block Dubai Ports World from taking over some terminal operations at six U.S. ports.

"Because of the strong relationship between the United Arab Emirates and the United States and to preserve that relationship, DP World has decided to transfer fully the U.S. operation of P&O Operations North America to a United States entity," DP World's chief operating officer, Edward H. Bilkey, said in a statement, read on the Senate floor by Sen. John Warner, R-Va.

Responding to Republican claims that she may be too angry to win national office, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton


told an audience Monday to wear such criticism as "a badge of honor" and suggested that gender played a role in the attacks.

"When you run as a Democrat, and in particular, when you run as a Democratic woman, whether you're running at the local, state or national level, it's likely you're going to draw some unfriendly fire," Clinton said at a breakfast fund-raiser hosted by black and Hispanic women supporters. "People will be attacking you instead of your ideas; they may impugn your patriotism; they may even say you're angry."


She added, "If they do that, wear it as a badge of honor, because you know what? There are lots of things that we should be angry and outraged about these days." She cited, among other things, the federal budget deficit, lobbying scandals in Washington, and the government's slow response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

It was the latest volley in a rhetorical back-and-forth between Clinton and leading GOP strategists that began last month, when Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman said Clinton "seems to have a lot of anger" and that American voters tend not to elect angry candidates.

He pointed to comments Clinton made on Martin Luther King Day, when she called the Bush administration "one of the worst" (Neglecting to Mention the Clinton era) in history, and compared the Republican-controlled House to a plantation. (She went from a Gender issue to a Race issue)

Top White House strategist Karl Rove later echoed that view, telling Washington Times reporter Bill Sammon in a new book that Clinton could have trouble winning the White House because there is a "brittleness about her."

Clinton, who has not yet said whether she's considering a presidential run in 2008, has responded in various ways. At first, she called the attacks a diversion from Republican "failures and shortcomings." (Neglecting to mention all the failures and shortcummings of the Clinton administration, notably the fact that Former President Clinton had Usama Bin Laden handed to him 3 times by the Sudan and never once took them up on thier offer to hand Bin Laden over to him, which could have prevented 9-11, and possibly the USS Cole bombing, as well as the Sexual escapades of the Former President in the White House and dating back to his days as Governor of Arkansas as well as the Former Presidents Impeachment for lying to Congress and the American people) And in a radio interview last week, she said "Karl Rove spends a lot of time obsessing about me,"?????????????????? suggesting he spends more time thinking about her political future than she did.

Until now, she has not said she considered any of the criticisms gender-based, although many observers have done so.

They include New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, who said Republicans "are casting Hillary Clinton as an angry woman, a she-monster melding images of Medea, the Furies, harpies, and a knife-wielding Glenn Close in 'Fatal Attraction.'" (With the General Public wondering the same thing)

Ross Baker, a political scientist at Rutgers University, said he agreed with Clinton's assessment but questioned whether she should have said anything.

"I think she's right, but whether or not it was prudent to acknowledge it this way is another thing," Baker said. "I think another politician might have dealt with it more humorously, to defuse its influence."

For her part, Republican National Committee spokeswoman Tara Wall declined to address the suggestion gender played a role in the attacks.

"When you vote to consistently raise people's taxes, vote against common-sense judicial nominees and use Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday to divide Americans along racial lines, you're likely to encourage criticism of both your ideas and temperament," she said.

Clinton's comments came the same day Kathleen Troia "KT" McFarland, a former Pentagon official under President Reagan, said she would seek the Republican nomination to challenge Clinton's re-election bid this year.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Congress on Tuesday renewed controversial provisions of the USA Patriot Act, the 2001 law passed weeks after the September 11 attacks to help the government investigate and capture possible terrorists.

The approval in the House of Representatives, by a vote of 280-138, sent the measure to President Bush for his signature.

The Senate last week voted 89-10 to approve the compromise package, which covers 16 provisions in the act that are set to expire on March 10.

"At last the Patriot Act will be reauthorized. And it's about time," Sen. Jon Kyl, an Arizona Republican, said after last week's vote.

"It will make America more secure, and that's the bottom line."

Three provisions of the renewed act would be reviewed in four years; the other provisions are permanent.

"Law enforcement officials and the intelligence community will not have to guess what the law will be. They will have the tools to fight terrorism," Kyl said.

A version of the reauthorization bill was passed by the House last year. But in December, Senate GOP leaders were unable to muster the 60 votes required under Senate rules to break a filibuster blocking the measure.

The filibuster was supported by most Democrats and a handful of Republicans, who insisted more changes in the bill were needed to protect civil liberties.

On Tuesday, Republicans voted in favor of the measures 214-13; among Democrats, 66 voted for the renewal, and 124 voted against it. One Independent voted against renewal.

Some critics of the final legislation contended that it gives too much power to the executive branch.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich, an Ohio Democrat who unsuccessfully sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004, voted against the act in 2001 and said he was "even more opposed" to the renewal.

"I rise in strong opposition to this legislation because it offers only a superficial reform that will have little if any impact on safeguarding our civil liberties," Kucinich said in House debate, according to his Web site.

"Congress has failed to do its job as a coequal branch of government," he said. "The administration's attack on our democracy has to be reigned in."

President Bush, along with top Justice Department and FBI officials, lobbied hard for renewal of the act, calling it a vital tool in the battle against terrorism.

"I applaud the Senate for voting to renew the Patriot Act and overcoming the partisan attempts to block its passage," Bush said last week from New Delhi, India.

"The terrorists have not lost the will or the ability to attack us. ... This bill will allow our law enforcement officials to continue to use the same tools against terrorists that are already used against drug dealers and other criminals, while safeguarding the civil liberties of the American people."

Bush's statements were echoed by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

"The legislation provides additional tools for protecting mass transportation systems and seaports from attack; takes steps to combat the methamphetamine epidemic that is sweeping our country; and closes dangerous loopholes in our ability to prevent terrorist financing," he said.

The measure also would create a National Security Division at the Department of Justice, he said.

Among the more controversial provisions are the "roving wiretap" portion and the "sneak and peek" section. The first allows the government to get a wiretap on every phone a suspect uses, while the second allows federal investigators to get access to library, business and medical records without a court order.

Facing a filibuster led by Sen. Russ Feingold, a Wisconsin Democrat, the Senate compromise approved last week somewhat limits the government's power to compel information from people targeted in terror investigations.

Senators agreed to exempt most libraries from secret demands for information and to limit a "gag rule" on other businesses that receive those demands. Full Story

DeLay Wins Four-Way Battle for Nomination

SUGAR LAND, Texas (AP) -- Rep. Tom DeLay

won the GOP nomination to the House on Tuesday, beating three challengers in his first election since he was indicted and forced to step aside as majority leader.

With 14 percent of precincts reporting, DeLay had 10,005 votes, or 64 percent. His closest challenger, environmental attorney Tom Campbell, had 4,049 votes, or 26 percent.

"I have always placed my faith in the voters, and today's vote shows they have placed their full faith in me," DeLay said in a statement. "Not only did they reject the politics of personal destruction, but they strongly rejected the candidates who used those Democrat tactics as their platform."

In the other big Texas primary race, a former Democratic congressman from Houston won the right to challenge Republican Gov. Rick Perry in a state where the GOP holds every statewide office.


Chris Bell prevailed over Bob Gammage, a former Texas Supreme Court justice who jumped into the race in December after a decade out of politics. Perry won his primary easily, collecting 85 percent of the vote against three little-known opponents.

With more than 20 percent of precincts reporting, Bell had 129,052 votes, or 63 percent. Gammage had 59,435, or 29 percent.

Bell said the victory was "exactly the boost my campaign needed" heading into what could be a historic four-way race for governor in November. Two independents with considerable political charisma - Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn and musician and professional wiseacre Kinky Friedman - are seeking enough signatures from voters who do not vote in the primary to get onto the fall ballot.

In a third contest Tuesday, Democratic voters in a congressional district stretching from San Antonio to Laredo had to decide a rematch between freshman Rep. Henry Cuellar and Ciro Rodriguez, who served 3 1/2 terms on Capitol Hill before losing to Cuellar in 2004. With no Republican running in the district, the winner will take the seat.

Lyn Adolphus, Delay supporter, in interview: Adolphus says the indictment motivated Delay's supporters to work hard for him.

DeLay, 58, was indicted last year and is awaiting trial on charges he illegally funneled corporate donations to GOP candidates for the Texas House in 2002. The Republicans won a majority in the Legislature that year, and then pushed through a congressional redistricting plan engineered by DeLay that sent more Republicans to Washington in 2004.

DeLay has also came under scrutiny over his ties to lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who pleaded guilty to fraud in January and is cooperating in an investigation of influence-peddling on Capitol Hill.

Tuesday's contest was DeLay's first serious primary challenge in the 22 years since he took office.

Campbell, a lawyer who was general counsel for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration during the first Bush administration, was considered the front-runner among DeLay's Republican challengers, who also included Mike Fjetland and Pat Baig. Campbell portrayed himself as a man of integrity and branded DeLay "unelectable."

After voting in his hometown of Sugar Land, DeLay returned to Washington for a campaign fundraiser hosted by two lobbyists. He criticized his opponents for their "politics of personal destruction," saying such tactics "were rejected just like they will be in November."

The Democratic nominee in the fall will be Nick Lampson, a well-financed former congressman ousted from office in 2004 under the new congressional map engineered by DeLay. Lampson had no primary opponent Tuesday.

DeLay "gets headlines for all the wrong reasons," Lampson said Tuesday. "I'm looking forward to that headline on November 8th: 'No Further DeLay.'"

The state's top election official predicted only 13 percent of the 12.7 million registered voters would cast primary ballots, so Strayhorn and Friedman should not have much trouble finding the 45,000-plus voters they each need to sign their petitions over the next two months.

Strayhorn, who calls herself "one tough grandma," got elected comptroller as a Republican but is running for governor as an independent, avoiding a primary against the popular Perry. She is the mother of White House press secretary Scott McClellan. Friedman is a cigar-chomping cowboy musician whose backup group on the road was called the Texas Jewboys.

At least two veterans of the Iraq war are running for Congress from Texas. David T. Harris, a Democrat, is expected to take on Rep. Joe Barton in November, and Van Taylor, a Republican, won the nomination Tuesday to go up against Democratic Rep. Chet Edwards in the Crawford-area district that includes Bush's ranch.

No matter what the Democrats try to do they sink thier own ship repeatedly! Obviously the American people are well aware of what the Liberal party as we know it today is trying to pull, and is all about. And this election obviously proves it.
