Bush Signs Patriot Act Renewal
One day ahead of the deadline, President Bush signed the renewal of the Patriot Act on Thursday.
Sixteen major provisions of the original law were set to expire Friday. Among the provisions being renewed, is one that lets federal officials obtain business records from libraries and bookstores in connection with foreign intelligence investigations.
Other provisions call for the sharing of information among law enforcement agencies and the intelligence community.
The measure finally cleared Congress this week after a lengthy fight over how to protect civil liberties.
