A Tribute To My Mom Betty

My Mom Betty 1931-2008

Everything Mom

How did you find the energy, Mom
To do all the things you did,
To be teacher, nurse and counselor
To me, when I was a kid.

How did you do it all, Mom,
Be a chauffeur, cook and friend,
Yet find time to be a playmate,
I just can’t comprehend.

I see now it was love, Mom
That made you come whenever I'd call,
Your inexhaustible love, Mom
And I thank you for it all.

Fact's About Barack Obama That We Dont Know

The United States Senate may vote any day on the stealth imposition of what could amount to an $845 BILLION United Nations style global tax on American citizens?

It's called the Global Poverty Act (S.2433), and it is being sponsored by none other than Senator Barack Obama.

According to some conservative sources, this disastrous legislation could eventually force U.S. taxpayers to fork over as much as 0.7 percent of the nation's Gross Domestic Product -- or $845,000,000,000.00 -- on welfare to third-world countries.

Here's what Phyllis Schlafly, conservative activist and founder of Eagle Forum, recently wrote:

"Obama's costly, dangerous and altogether bad bill (S. 2433), which could come up in the Senate any day, is called the Global Poverty Act. It would commit U.S. taxpayers to spend 0.7 percent of our Gross Domestic Product on foreign handouts..."

Time is of the essence because Senator Joe Biden, the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee just issued a report on the Global Poverty Act and it was placed on the Senate Legislative Calendar on Thursday the 24th.

That means that time is of the essence as this potentially massive surrender of your hard-earned tax dollars to the third world may be close to a vote.

That's why we must act now... BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!

CALL YOUR SENATORS AND CONGRESSMAN!

Senator Obama's Global Poverty Act has already passed the House (many Members unfortunately voted in favor of it without carefully noting exactly what was in it) and President Bush may very well sign it!

That's why it must be stopped, and it must be stopped NOW!

It Gets Worse!

Here are some of the additional provisions of the Millennium Development Goal:

a "currency transfer tax," that is, a tax imposed on companies and individuals who must exchange dollars for foreign currency;

a "tax on the rental value of land and natural resources";

a "royalty on worldwide fossil energy projection -- oil, natural gas, coal";

"fees for the commercial use of the oceans, fees for airplane use of the skies, fees for use of the electromagnetic spectrum, fees on foreign exchange transactions, and a tax on the carbon content of fuels."

a "standing peace force," meaning a standing United Nations army that might, in time, be large enough to force us to bend to its will;

a "UN arms register of all small arms and light weapons," the beginning of the end of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution;

the "eradication of poverty" by the "redistribution [of] wealth and land" -- How do you suppose the United Nations expects to "redistribute" the land and the wealth? And what country do you think the third-world majority will go after first?

cancellation of "the debts of developing countries,"

"a fair distribution of the earth's resources."

and "political control of the global economy."

In other words, it's a blueprint for a world government, owned and operated by the United Nations.

One thing is clear: the Millennium Development Goal is a dagger aimed at the heart of America.

While the Global Poverty Act, as presently championed by its Senate supporters, embraces certain aspects of the Millennium Development Goal, one should wonder if some of our legislators also support land and wealth "redistribution."

We must stop this bill dead in its tracks.

We must stop this subversion NOW! Don't let Senator Obama's Global Poverty Act sneak through the Senate.

Eight Belles Euthinized Right After Winning Second Place At Kentucky Derby

Filly Eight Belles breaks down after 2nd-place Derby finish

Second-Place Derby Finisher ‘Eight Belles’ Euthanized After On-Track Break Down

Veternarian Describes Injuries to Eight Belles That Led to Euthanization

The filly Eight Belles finished second behind favorite Big Brown in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, then collapsed with two broken front ankles and was euthanized after crossing the wire.
The field of 20 horses was galloping out around the first turn at Churchill Downs when Eight Belles suddenly went down on both front legs and jockey Gabriel Saez slid off.

"When we passed the wire I stood up," said Saez, a first-time Derby rider. "She started galloping funny. I tried to pull her up. That's when she went down."

An equine ambulance reached her near the second turn and tended to the filly.

"There was no possible way to save her," on-call veterinarian Dr. Larry Bramlage said. "She broke both front ankles. That's a bad injury."

Trainer Larry Jones and owner Rick Porter decided to run Eight Belles against the boys in America's greatest race despite her never having done so before. She brought in solid credentials with a four-race winning streak and then ran gallantly.

The dark gray filly also was entered in Friday's Kentucky Oaks for fillies. Jones, however, won that race with Proud Spell and set himself up to pull off the double.

Eight Belles was the first filly since 1999 to run in the Derby; the last to win was Winning Colors in 1988. She didn't press 2-1 favorite Big Brown down the stretch, and he drew away to a 4 3/4-length victory.

Still, Eight Belles was a sentimental pick by 157,770 fans, second- largest crowd in Derby history. She even had the support of Democratic presidential candidate Hilary Clinton. Eight Belles repaid their faith by returning $10.60 and $6.40.

Jockey Kent Desormeaux and Big Brown galloped by Eight Belles in her waning moments.

"This horse showed you his heart and Eight Belles showed you her life for our enjoyment today," he said. "I'm deeply sympathetic to that team for their loss."

At first, Jones didn't realize anything was wrong until he began walking back to the stable area and saw Saez aboard another horse.

"There was no way to save her," a visibly upset Jones said. "She couldn't stand."

Bramlage said the fracture in Eight Belles' left front ankle opened the skin, allowing contamination to set in. At least one of her sesamoid bones was broken, too.

"She didn't have a front leg to stand on to be splinted and hauled off in the ambulance, so she was immediately euthanized," he said. "In my years in racing, I have never seen this happen at the end of the race or during the race."

Eight Belles appeared to be galloping out normally around the first turn and was headed into the start of the backstretch when she dropped without warning. The crowd was busy high-fiving and celebrating and because of the distance from the grandstand, many didn't realize tragedy had struck.

"Everyone breathed a big sigh of relief that everyone came around the track cleanly and then all of a sudden it happened," Bramlage said.

"Horses really tire. They are taking a lot of load on their skeleton because their muscles are fatigued. The difficult thing to explain with her is it's so far after the wire, and she was easing down like you'd like to see a horse slow down by that point. I don't have an explanation for it."

What a beautiful Horse She Was. What a tradegy. I am in total shock over this. Maybe Big Brown can finally win the Triple Crown and dedicate it to Eight Belles.

Food Crisis Starts Eclipsing Climate Change Worries \ Gore Ducks

Food Crisis Starts Eclipsing Climate Change Worries

Gore Ducks, as a Backlash Builds Against Biofuels

The campaign against climate change could be set back by the global food crisis, as foreign populations turn against measures to use foodstuffs as substitutes for fossil fuels.

One factor being blamed for the price hikes is the use of government subsidies to promote the use of corn for ethanol production. An estimated 30% of America’s corn crop now goes to fuel, not food.

“I don’t think anybody knows precisely how much ethanol contributes to the run-up in food prices, but the contribution is clearly substantial,” a professor of applied economics and law at the University of Minnesota, C. Ford Runge, said. A study by a Washington think tank, the International Food Policy Research Institute, indicated that between a quarter and a third of the recent hike in commodities prices is attributable to biofuels.

Last year, Mr. Runge and a colleague, Benjamin Senauer, wrote an article in Foreign Affairs, “How Biofuels Could Starve the Poor.”

“We were criticized for being alarmist at the time,” Mr. Runge said. “I think our views, looking back a year, were probably too conservative.”

Ethanol was initially promoted as a vehicle for America to cut back on foreign oil. In recent years, biofuels have also been touted as a way to fight climate change, but the food crisis does not augur well for ethanol’s prospects.

“It takes around 400 pounds of corn to make 25 gallons of ethanol,” Mr. Senauer, also an applied economics professor at Minnesota, said. “It’s not going to be a very good diet but that’s roughly enough to keep an adult person alive for a year.”

Mr. Senauer said climate change advocates, such as Vice President Gore, need to distance themselves from ethanol to avoid tarnishing the effort against global warming. “Crop-based biofuels are not part of the solution. They, in fact, add to the problem. Whether Al Gore has caught up with that, somebody ought to ask him,” the professor said.

Mr. Gore was not available for an interview yesterday on the food crisis, according to his spokeswoman. A spokesman for Mr. Gore’s public campaign to address climate change, the Alliance for Climate Protection, declined to comment for this article.

However, the scientist who shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Mr. Gore, Rajendra Pachauri of the United Nations’s Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change, has warned that climate campaigners are unwise to promote biofuels in a way that risks food supplies. “We should be very, very careful about coming up with biofuel solutions that have major impact on production of food grains and may have an implication for overall food security,”. “Questions do arise about what is being done in North America, for instance, to convert corn into sugar then into biofuels, into ethanol.”

A Harvard professor of environmental studies who has advised Mr. Gore, Michael McElroy, warned in a November-December 2006 article in Harvard Magazine that “the production of ethanol from either corn or sugar cane presents a new dilemma: whether the feedstock should be devoted to food or fuel. With increasing use of corn and sugar cane for fuel, a rise in related food prices would seem inevitable.” The article, “The Ethanol Illusion” went so far as to praise Senator McCain for summing up the corn-ethanol energy initiative launched in the United States in 2003 as “highway robbery perpetrated on the American public by Congress.”

In Britain, some hunger-relief and environmental groups have turned sharply against biofuels. “Setting mandatory targets for biofuels before we are aware of their full impact is madness,”.

The most obvious impact the food crisis has had in America, aside from higher prices, is the imposition of rationing at some warehouse stores to deal with a spike in demand for large quantities of rice, oil, and flour. The CEO of Costco Wholesale Corp., James Sinegal, is blaming press hype for the buying limits.

All this Global Hysteria is the reason food prices are skyrocketing. Al Gore and his crock of crap. In the 70's it was "Global Cooling" that was going to destroy the world, then it was Al Gore and his non-existant "Global Warming" theory. And in reality it's going to be hunger! End this Global Hysteria NONSENSE before the whole world starves to death!

Carrier Strike Groups Head For Persian Gulf To Give Iran A Reminder

Deployment of second carrier to Gulf a 'reminder'

US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said Tuesday the deployment of a second aircraft carrier to the Gulf should be seen as a "reminder" of US military power in the region.

But Gates flatly denied that the United States was preparing the ground for military strikes against Iran.

"I don't think we'll have two carriers for a protracted period of time. So I don't see it as an escalation. I think it could be seen, though, as a reminder," Gates told reporters here during a visit with Mexican officials.

The arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Gulf follows a noticeable hardening in US rhetoric against Iran for meddling in Iraq and playing a destabilizing role in the region.

USS Abraham Lincoln

Commander Jeff Davis, a US Navy spokesman, said the Lincoln would overlap with the departing carrier USS Harry Truman by "no more than a day or two." He said it was a "routine regular replacement."

CBS News reported that the Pentagon has ordered new options be drawn up for attacking Iran and that the State Department has begun drafting an ultimatum that would tell Iran to stop meddling or else.

But when asked here whether the Pentagon was preparing for military strikes against Iran, Gates said flatly, "No."

The stepped-up US rhetoric against Iran has come against the backdrop of an intensifying violence in Iraq as US forces clash with Shiite militia "special groups" that the US military say are backed by Iran.

Some 44 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq so far this month, a grim rebound that comes as US "surge" brigades are withdrawing from the country.

Gates said a number of the latest casualties had come from rocketing of the fortified Green Zone and joint security stations from Sadr City, a bastion of followers of radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

"We just haven't seen that for some period of time. So I think that's the reason for the spike in casualties, sad to say," he said.

"As we work our way around Sadr City, which we basically have stayed out of, we are encountering the kind of heavy combat" that US forces have experienced when they have gone into other new areas, Gates said.

"Clearly we are watching it very closely. But I think that General Petraeus is comfortable with the plans we have to bring out at least the five surge brigades," he said.

HMS Manchester/UK Prepares To Join Carrier Group

General David Petraeus, the top US commander in Iraq, has charged that the Quds Force, a covert branch of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, was funding, training and arming Shiite militants to kill US troops.

Petraeus and other military leaders have said that the extent of the Iranian involvement became apparent last month after an Iraqi government crackdown in the southern port of Basra on armed gangs that exploded into violence.

He told Congress earlier this month that the Iranian-backed "special groups" were the greatest long-term threat to a viable democratic Iraq.

Admiral Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Friday he was increasingly concerned about Iran's behavior and pointedly warned that "it would be a mistake to think we are out of combat power."

At the same time, Mullen said military action was not imminent and acknowledged that a third US conflict in the Middle East would be "very stressing for us."

Gates also has played down the military option until now.

"Another war in the Middle East is the last thing we need and, in fact, I believe it would be disastrous on a number of levels," he said in a speech last week at the US Military Academy at West Point on April 21.

"But the military option must be kept on the table given the destabilizing policies of the regime and the risks inherent in a future Iranian nuclear threat -- either directly or through proliferations," he said.

Barack Obama Throws His Pastor Under The Bus

So Barack Obama finally got rid of his Pastor Jerimiah Wright. I think it's a little to late.

This man has caused so much damage with his mouth it's probably not fixable and he probably isnt done yet.

He has said things like, God Da** America, America of KKK, "A", The American Government had created AIDS to get rid of black people, America's Chickens are coming home to roost, White this white that, hate speech extrordinare etc..etc..etc..

You cannot tell me Obama sat in the pews hearing Wright preach and NEVER heard this crap! You just cant. If that were the case and Obama never heard any of this in 20 years then why did Obama dis-invite the Pastor to Obama's speech he made saying he was running for President? He (Obama) said "You are a little to radical for me so you can pray with me backstage and that's it"! Ok if Obama knew Pastor Wright was to radical back then, then he must have known all along that his Pastor was radical from the get go.

Which leads me to believe this is ALL a Political ploy. Like Pastor Wright said: "Obama will have to say what he has to say to get elected", and now, he has done just that. There was probably a phone call to Wright from Obama last night saying "Rev Wright, you know I am going to really have to trash you tommorrow, and the Pastor probably said that's ok son you do what you have to do to get elected".

None of this leads me to believe that Obama sat in those pews in Wright's Church, never heard any of this hate speech, had himself baptised by Rev Wright, his daughter's baptised by Rev Wright, and that explains why his wife Michelle has said "She has never been so proud to be an American", of course not now that her husband is in the race, and was winning, and that Barack Obama in 20 years, 20 YEARS, never heard ANY of this.

Then again you have Obama's ties to William Ayres of the Weather Underground a Convicted Felon/Terrorist who wishes he had done more than just bombing the Pentagon. Obama goes to a fundraiser sponsored by this man, and knew good and well who he was because Ayres loves to brag about it, and accept's this man's donations for his campaign!

There is a whole lot more to Barack Obama than ANY of us know, and hopefully this will all come out soon, so we dont get duped into believeing he is the messiah, the savior, when he is anything but.

Supreme Court Says States Can Demand Photo ID For Voting

States can require voters to produce photo identification, the Supreme Court ruled Monday, upholding a Republican-inspired law that Democrats say will keep some poor, older and minority voters from casting ballots.

Twenty-five states require some form of ID, and the court's 6-3 decision rejecting a challenge to Indiana's strict voter ID law could encourage others to adopt their own measures. Oklahoma legislators said the decision should help them get a version approved.

The ruling means the ID requirement will be in effect for next week's presidential primary in Indiana, where a significant number of new voters are expected to turn out for the Democratic contest between Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.

The results could say something about the effect of the law, either because a large number of voters will lack identification and be forced to cast provisional ballots or because the number turns out to be small.

Supporters of the law say it's all about preventing fraud.

Indiana has a "valid interest in protecting 'the integrity and reliability of the electoral process,'" said Justice John Paul Stevens in an opinion that was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Stevens said that Indiana's desire to prevent fraud and to inspire voter confidence in the election system are important even though there have been no reports of the kind of fraud the law was designed to combat. Evidence of voters being inconvenienced by the law's requirements also is scant. For the overwhelming majority of voters, an Indiana driver's license serves as the identification.

The law does not apply to absentee balloting, where election experts agree the threat of fraud is higher.

The Indiana law was passed in 2005. Democrats and civil rights groups opposed it as unconstitutional and called it a thinly veiled effort to discourage groups of voters who tend to prefer Democrats.

It was in effect during the 2006 elections when Democrats picked up three congressional seats in Indiana and won control of the state House of Representatives.

Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas agreed with the outcome Monday, but wrote separately in favor of a broader defense of voter ID laws.

"The universally applicable requirements of Indiana's voter-identification law are eminently reasonable. The burden of acquiring, possessing and showing a free photo identification is simply not severe, because it does not 'even represent a significant increase over the usual burdens of voting,'" Scalia said.

Justices Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and David Souter dissented.

Indiana's voter ID law "threatens to impose nontrivial burdens on the voting rights of tens of thousands of the state's citizens," Souter said.

The targets of the law, he said, are "voters who are poor and old."

Yet Stevens wrote that the law does not single out groups of voters for different treatment. "We cannot conclude that the statute imposes 'excessively burdensome requirements' on any class of voters," he said. That opinion suggested the outcome could be different in a state where voters could provide evidence that their rights had been impaired.

Indiana provides IDs free of charge to people without driver's licenses. It also allows voters who lack photo ID's to cast a provisional ballot and then show up within 10 days at their county courthouse to produce identification or otherwise attest to their identity.

Stevens said these provisions also help reduce the burden on people who lack driver's licenses.

Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita, a Republican, praised the decision. "This says to the voter you can have confidence again in the elections because we're doing some of the things the guy at the video store does when you go and rent a video," Rokita said.

Ken Falk, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana, said the court was willing to burden "tens of thousands of eligible voters who lack a government-issued identification while accepting at face value Indiana's unsubstantiated claim of voter fraud." The ACLU brought the case on behalf of Indiana voters.

The proliferation of voter ID laws followed the enactment in 2002 of the federal Help America Vote Act. The law was designed in response to the disputed 2000 presidential election. The law's voter ID provisions apply to first-time voters and do not mandate photo identification.

Many Democrats criticized the ruling Monday. It places "an unnecessary burden on elderly and low-income voters, not to mention other voters of disparate racial and ethnic backgrounds," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada.

Mary Wilson, president of the League of Women Voters, said her group has never found a problem with in-person voter fraud. "We'd be the first ones out there to prevent voter fraud, if there really was a problem," she said.

Several critics pointed to a footnote in Stevens' opinion to show how far back he went — 140 years — to describe the corrosive effects of widespread fraud at polling places, a reference to Boss Tweed's influence in New York's municipal elections in 1868.

Republicans, meanwhile, praised the decision for recognizing the threat of voter fraud. "Today's ruling rightfully allows states to safeguard against such destructive abuse," said House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio.

In Oklahoma, Republican legislators said the ruling should help them pass a less-stringent voter ID bill. The Oklahoma House has approved legislation to require voters to present some form of identification — including a utility bill or bank statement. The measure faces a final vote by the state Senate.

Monday's case was the court's first significant foray into election law since the Bush v. Gore dispute that sealed the 2000 election for George W. Bush. The voter ID ruling, with no majority opinion and four of the nine justices writing, lacked the conservative-liberal split that marked the 2000 case.

WOW! So that means the Democrats cant register Dead People, Illegal Aliens, and Convicted Felons to vote like last time. I'm all for this. I've alway's had to show ID in Oklahoma to vote as it is. And most states hand out Identification Cards for free anyway. This wont prevent all voter fraud, but it will eleiminate a great portion of it :-)

I Knew It, I Knew It, The Nation Of Islam Is Involved With Barack Obama And His Pastor

Listening to Jeremiah Wright this morning, thought he would clear up all the rhetoric he spewed and distance himself from it all and to my shock and awe (Yeah Right) he did nothing of the kind.

Now he is recieving death threat's and who is protecting him? THE NATION OF ISLAM!! This should really come as NO surprise to anyone.

Here we go, with Barack Obama that is who and what we would have to deal with The Nation of Islam, The Black Panthers, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, etc.

Enough is enough of this nonsense.

I have been saying this all along.

Foxnews has some of this story *snip*

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright taunted a gathering of journalists Monday in Washington, D.C., calling their coverage of his speeches an attack on the black church, while defending his claim that the U.S. was responsible for the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

Wright, the controversial former pastor of Barack Obama’s church, took dead aim at the U.S. government Monday — saying American soldiers in Iraq have died “over a lie” and calling the war “unjust” — as he called for reconciliation and understanding between blacks and whites.

Wright was speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. as he continues a series of nationwide appearances following an uproar over remarks he made in some of his sermons delivered from the pulpit.

On Monday, he did not shy away from tossing sharp barbs, either at the media, at the government or at other public figures.

Answering his first question, Wright first chided the questioner for not having heard the whole sermon, and then defended comments he made shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks that the United States had brought terrorism onto itself.

“If you heard the whole sermon, first of all, you heard that I was quoting the ambassador from Iraq. … But Number Two, to quote the Bible: ‘Be not deceived. God is not mocked, for whatsoever you sew, that you shall’ –” he paused, and then some members of the audience responded, “Reap.”

He continued: “Jesus said do unto others as you would have them do unto you. You cannot do terrorism on other people and expect it never to come back on you. Those are biblical principles, not Jeremiah Wright bombastic, divisive principles.”

Wright also faced a question about his patriotism.”I served six years in the military. Does that make me patriotic?” he asked. “How many years did (Vice President Dick) Cheney serve?”

Wright also said fought off criticisms that he used “bombastic language” and fended off questions about Obama’s level of religious participation, even while painting Obama as a regular church-goer.

When Wright said Obama had distanced himself from speeches he had not heard in their entirety, Wright faced a follow up question on whether Obama was a regular attendee, or if he dozed during services.

He told the questioner: “He goes to church about as much as you do. What did your pastor preach in the last week? You don’t know?”

But Wright also said he wouldn’t refrain from criticism of Obama.

He said he has told Obama that if he is elected in November and is inaugurated in January, “I’m coming after you.” He said that’s because his differences are not with the American people, but U.S. policies.

“Whether he gets elected or not, I’m still going to have to be answerable to God on November 5 and January 21,” Wright said.

But during his remarks, Wright also sought to put space between what he called “attacks” on the black church and possibilities for racial harmony.

“The most recent attack on the black church, it is not an attack on Jeremiah Wright, it is an attack on the black church,” Wright said.

He frequently criticized the press, but also said the heightened scrutiny of him and the black church could serve as a bridge for reconciliation and a decrease in the kinds of racial hatred that were exhibited during slavery, apartheid and by groups such as the Ku Klux Klan.

“Maybe this dialog on race … can move the people of faith in this country from various stages of alienation and marginalization to the exciting possibility of reconciliation.”

Obama’s association with Wright came into question after media reports this spring examined speeches over the years by Wright. At one point he bellowed, “God damn America,” and he has referred to the United States as the “U.S. of KKK-A.” Wright recently retired as senior pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, where Obama has attended for the past 20 years.

The pastor has set out to set the record straight, last week appearing in his first interview since the controversy erupted, and over the weekend giving two sermons and making an appearance at an NAACP event Sunday night in Detroit.

On Monday, his address in Washington is part of a tw0-day symposium on the African-American religious experience.

Yet the controversy isn’t appearing to go away. Even as Republican presidential candidate John McCain condemns the North Carolina GOP for focusing on Obama and Wright’s relationship in a new advertisement, yet another ad — this time in Mississippi congressional district race — has surfaced.

The ad comes from Republican candidate Greg Davis, who is running against Democrat Travis Childers.

The ad says: “Obama says Childers will put progress before politics, but when Obama’s pastor cursed America, blaming us for 9/11, Childers said nothing. When Obama ridiculed rural folks for clinging to guns and religion, Childers said nothing. Travis Childers: He took Obama’s endorsement over our conservative values. Conservatives just can’t trust Travis Childers.”

In Case You Missed It/Gordon Brown PM Britain: "World Owes President Bush Debt Of Gratitude"

With the Pope's Visit last week this event was overshadowed and of course no media oulet is going to cover this.

Brown upbeat on US ‘special relationship’

Gordon Brown heaped praise on George W. Bush with language evoking Tony Blair on Thursday, as he sought to overcome the impression that the “special relationship” had entered a cooler phase.

Speaking at a joint press conference in the White House Rose Garden, Mr Brown said he stood “shoulder to shoulder” with Mr Bush in a transatlantic bond that was “stronger than ever”. “The world owes President Bush a huge debt of gratitude in leading the world in our determination to root out terrorism,” Mr Brown said.

In taking the measure of the next US president, the prime minister hoped to find fresh long-term purpose for a relationship that has become mired in the trials of conducting two wars and tackling a financial downturn.

Relations between Britain and the US have appeared to become less close since the departure of Mr Blair, who had a particularly strong relationship with Mr Bush. Tensions have emerged with Mr Brown, particularly over policy in Iraq.

On Thursday, Mr Bush and Mr Brown made a show of unity, delivering a tough message to Iran over its nuclear programme and advocating the widening of European Union sanctions against Tehran. Mr Brown pledged to talk to EU leaders in coming days to broaden sanctions to liquefied gas, sending “another signal to the regime that what is happening is unacceptable”. Mr Bush praised Mr Brown for his tough stance on Iran, saying “he sees the threat as I do”.

Addressing the faltering world economy, Mr Brown called for “vigilance” and concerted action to restore international confidence but there were no specific proposals from the two leaders.

Turning to Zimbabwe, Mr Bush chastised President Robert Mugabe for presiding over a sham election. “What kind of election is it if you [do] not let the will of the people be known,” he said.

Both leaders were at pains to stress the enduring strength of bilateral ties, referring to the “special relationship” a dozen times. Disagreements over strategy in Iraq, highlighted by recent fighting in Basra, were glossed over. While some US officials are privately critical of the UK’s handling of southern Iraq, Mr Bush chose to praise the heroism of British troops, while Mr Brown pledged there would be no “artificial timetable for withdrawal”.

Amid the pleasantries, however, there was room for disagreement. Mr McCain has expressed disappointment about the UK troop drawdown in Iraq, while Mr Brown's pro-trade instincts clash with the protectionist rhetoric of Ms Clinton and Mr Obama. But Mr Brown believes there are important areas of agreement, particularly on climate change, with whomever is elected. The change of administration is, in his mind, an opportunity to recast relations across the Atlantic.

Convincing the candidates to leave the campaign trail to meet him was perhaps the biggest coup of Mr Brown's trip to America, which has been eclipsed by the Pope’s visit.

I agree! The world does owe President Bush a debt of gratitude going after the terrorists. It's so nice to see the leader of another Nation saying the same thing we have known for a long time. I wish I had time to have posted this earlier but the Pope took over my blog for a while :-)

Disneyland Comes To Baghdad

Llewellyn Werner admits he is facing obstacles most amusement park developers never have to deal with – insurgent attacks and looting.

When you are building an amusement park in downtown Baghdad, those risks come with the territory.

Mr Werner, chairman of C3, a Los Angeles-based holding company for private equity firms, is pouring millions of dollars into developing the Baghdad Zoo and Entertainment Experience, a massive American-style amusement park that will feature a skateboard park, rides, a concert theatre and a museum. It is being designed by the firm that developed Disneyland. “The people need this kind of positive influence. It’s going to have a huge psychological impact,” Mr Werner said.

The 50-acre (20 hectare) swath of land sits adjacent to the Green Zone and encompasses Baghdad’s existing zoo, which was looted, left without power and abandoned after the American-led invasion in 2003. Only 35 of 700 animals survived – some starved, some were stolen and some were killed by Iraqis fearing food shortages.

In the years that followed, the zoo and the surrounding al-Zawra park became an occasional target for insurgent attacks. But in recent months, families have begun to return cautiously for weekend picnics. Renovations have already begun on the zoo, with cages being repainted and new animals arriving, including ostriches, bears and a lion.
