George Tenet The Idiot

Tenet Memoir Draws Heat From Key Players

NEW YORK - The backlash has built up even before the official release of former CIA Director George Tenet's memoir, with criticism about his version of the run-up to the Iraq war, interrogation techniques and other events.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Sunday disputed Tenet's claim that the Bush administration, before the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, never had a serious debate about whether Iraq posed an imminent threat or whether to tighten existing sanctions.

"The president started a discussion practically on the day that he took power about how to enhance sanctions against Iraq," she said. "You may remember that in his first press conference, he said the sanctions had become Swiss cheese."

Rice, who was Bush's national security adviser in his first term, said the administration reviewed the sanctions, went to the United Nations to strengthen them and tried to tighten the no-fly zone in northern Iraq to better police Saddam Hussein's forces.

She also said the question about the imminence of the threat was not "if somebody is going to strike tomorrow."

"It's whether you believe you're in a stronger position today to deal with the threat, or whether you're going to be in a stronger position tomorrow," she said. "And it was the president's assessment that the situation in Iraq was getting worse."

A Tenet associate, who spoke on condition of anonymity before the book's release Monday, said Tenet was not talking about improving the sanctions, but rather the debate about the wisdom of going to war. The associate said those debates did not happen in the presence of Tenet or other senior CIA officials, despite their participation in numerous discussions in the White House's situation room.

The memoir from the second-longest serving CIA chief covers many topics - from his attempts to help negotiate peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians during the Clinton administration, to the days surrounding Sept. 11, 2001, and to the invasion of Iraq and its aftermath.

Can George Tenet be any more of an idiot? He gave us faulty intelligence on Iraq, (Some would argue differently) Failed to get the ok from Sandy Burglar or Clinton to fire on Bin Laden when the Clinton administation had him right in thier sites, sits behind Colon Powell at the United Nations while Powell went on and on about evidence we had AND EVERYBODY ELSE SEEMED TO HAVE about Iraq and WMD and NEVER said a word that it might be wrong before they even went to the UN, (Which there are still questions as to how wrong this information ever was) and now writes a book about (What?) FAULTY INTELLIGENCE in THIS administration? Let us not forget who hired this peach, BILL CLINTON! President Bush did make a mistake, HE DIDNT FIRE TENET UPON ENTERING OFFICE. Please!! George Tenet no body is listening to you anymore. And who is going to profit off this book? George Tenet.

There were many more reasons we went to Iraq (UN Resolution 1441) (Iraq Liberation Act) among MANY other reasons, and we are all glad Saddam is gone and are rooting for our Troops to git 'er done, but seriously George Tenet is an Idiot.

FRED THOMPSON UPDATE:

Reagan's Men Throw In With Fred Thompson

RUN FRED RUN.!!!!

Ronald Reagan's closest allies are throwing their weight behind the White House bid by the late president's fellow actor, Fred Thompson.

The film star and former Republican senator from Tennessee will this week use a speech in the heart of Reagan country, in southern California, to woo party bigwigs in what insiders say is the next step in his coming out as a candidate.

Fred Thompson’s character in Law and Order is ‘the president all Americans want’

A key figure in the Reagan inner circle has now given his seal of approval to Mr Thompson, best known as a star of the television crime drama Law and Order.

As deputy chief of staff, Michael Deaver was a key member of the "troika" of aides who kept the Reagan White House on track. With the chief of staff James Baker and special assistant Ed Meese, he was the master of image and presentation.

Mr Deaver sees the same raw material in Mr Thompson as was perceived in Ronald Reagan, describing him as someone "that could really make a difference". He added: "He is very popular in his party. He could change this whole thing and turn this primary system upside down.

"As Ronald Reagan used to say, after he stole a line from Al Jolson, 'Stay tuned, you ain't seen nothing yet'."

Mr Thompson's political and acting careers have been closely interwoven for more than 20 years. He originally worked as a lawyer and -Republican campaign -manager, and was a key legal counsel in the Watergate scandal in the Seventies

He was then asked to play himself in a 1985 film about a real-life judicial corruption scandal in Tennessee, supposedly because the producers could not find a professional actor who could portray him plausibly. That launched his acting career, which he has maintained alongside stints as a senator and continued Republican campaigning.

He has been a popular choice for on-screen authority figures, playing variously a White House chief of staff, a CIA boss, a highly placed FBI agent, and a senator. As one New York Times critic noted: "When Hollywood directors need someone who can personify governmental power, they often turn to him."

Mr Deaver voiced the view of many Republicans that the current crop of declared candidates is unsatisfactory. Of the front runner, the former New York mayor Rudi Giuliani, he said: "His popularity may be a mile wide and an inch deep. I'm sure that lead will shrink."

Mr Deaver's intervention is significant. He is very close to Mr Reagan's widow, Nancy, and is seen as the keeper of the Reagan flame.

Clark Judge, a White House speechwriter for Mr Reagan, said: "Fred Thompson, like Ronald Reagan, is a man of tremendous substance. There is a sense in the party that none of the candidates is quite 'it'."

Mr Reagan, he said, had "embodied the mission of the party - entrepreneurial growth, limited government and a strong national defence. Whoever can bring that mission into this age will be the nominee. And it may be Fred Thompson." Roger Stone, who was a Reagan campaign strategist, said: "The president Americans want is, in fact, the guy they see on Law and Order: wise, thoughtful, deliberative, confident without the cockiness of George W Bush, urbane yet country. Fred Thompson communicates all those virtues."

In 1965, when Mr Reagan, then the host of the television show Death Valley Days, was considering whether to enter politics, members of the Lincoln Club in Orange County persuaded him to run for governor of California.

On Friday Mr Thompson will address the 45th annual dinner of the Lincoln Club, which is billed as the "largest and most active political club in the United States." The invitation was one that other Republican candidates had tried to secure.

The club includes some of California's richest businessmen - a necessity if you need to raise $20 million quickly in order to compete with Mr Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney. The club found $100,000 for the 2003 campaign to oust California's Democrat governor, Gray Davis, which helped Arnold Schwarzenegger into the post.

Mr Thompson has shown that he recognises the importance of assuming the Reagan mantle. He is on record as saying: "Ronald Reagan believed in something. How much we need that today. He showed what can be done if you have the will to push for tough choices, and the ability to ask the people to accept them."

Mr Reagan himself, asked whether his training as an actor had prepared him for the presidency, once replied: "I don't see how any fellow that wasn't an actor could do this job."

Americans need not wait for Mr Thompson to win next year's election to see him in the Oval Office. He plays President Ulysses S Grant in the film, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, which opens next month.

The Truth: What Would Happen If We Withdraw From Iraq Before Iraq Is Ready

Losers

By Oliver North

If Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is right, nearly 60 percent of Americans agree with him that the war in Iraq is already lost. And if he is correct in saying that losing the war will increase Democrat majorities in future elections, then it may be fair to conclude that Americans now love losers. I'm not buying any of it -- and neither are the troops who are fighting this war.

In the days since Reid announced "this war is lost," I have heard from dozens of the soldiers, sailors, airmen, Guardsmen and Marines that I have covered in eight trips to Iraq and two to Afghanistan for FOX News. Some of those who correspond with me are there now, others are home. Some are preparing to deploy again. None of them agree with Reid's assessment.

One e-mail from Ramadi, Iraq observed: "Good thing this guy Reid wasn't around in 1940 when Winston Churchill promised the people of Great Britain nothing but 'blood, toil, tears and sweat.'" Another, a Guardsman who recently returned from Mesopotamia with a Purple Heart, noted that Reid has become "Al Qaeda's most powerful ally." A Marine corporal I last saw along the banks of the Tigris River -- now a Mississippi State University student -- asked me, "Do those people who think we've lost this war have any idea what things will be like if we really do lose?" It's an important question that none of the potentates on the Potomac who just voted to withdraw U.S. troops appear willing to address.

According to military folklore, Napoleon kept a corporal at his side to ensure that the orders issued in battle were understandable by the troops who had to carry them out. Whether true or not, it's time for Reid and Nancy Pelosi to find such a corporal who will ask them such questions, for if the Democrats continue their current course, we may well lose this war -- and they will have embraced defeat and all that comes with it.

What would losing the war in Iraq mean? It's a picture so dark and depressing that it makes the collapse in Vietnam, 32 years ago next week, look like a Sunday school picnic. The fall of Saigon was horrific for the people of Vietnam and their neighbors in Cambodia and Laos. More than 5 million became refugees and by the most conservative estimates at least a million others perished.

For most Americans, the consequences were minimal. The vast majority of the 2.8 million of us who had fought and bled there mourned the loss of 58,253 of our comrades, swallowed the bitterness of defeat and got on with our lives. Our nation spent a few hundred million tax dollars on refugee relief and resettlement, and tried to forget what people in Reid's party called "the long nightmare of Vietnam."

But classified U.S. intelligence assessments, military contingency plans and staff studies evaluating the consequences of a precipitous U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, coupled with the lack of funding for political reform measures, as contained in the legislation just passed by Reid's party, paint a far more dismal picture than anything that happened after Vietnam.

Within months, an immediate upsurge in vicious sectarian violence fomented by Iranian intervention on behalf of Shiite militias and Wahabbi-supported, Al Qaeda-affiliated terror groups. As U.S. forces retreat to a half-dozen staging areas for retrograde through Kuwait and Jordan, American casualties will dramatically increase as suicide bombers seek "martyrdom" in their victory.

Inside of 18 months, the fragile democratically elected government in Baghdad will collapse, precipitating a real sectarian civil war and the creation of Taliban-like "regional governments" that will impose brutal, misogynistic rule throughout the country. The ensuing flood of refuges into Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Turkey and Iran will overwhelm relief organizations, creating a humanitarian disaster making what's happening in Darfur pale by comparison.

The Kurds in northern Iraq are likely to declare an autonomous region that could well result in Turkish, Iranian and even Syrian military intervention.

In the course of withdrawing U.S. combat brigades and support units, billions of dollars in American military equipment and ordnance will have to be destroyed or left behind. More than $40 billion in reconstruction projects for schools, health-care facilities, sanitation, clean water, electrical distribution and agricultural development will be abandoned. Plans to exploit the new West Qurna oil field in southeastern Iraq will be forsaken.

The governments of Kuwait, Jordan, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain, intimidated by Iranian boldness in acquiring nuclear weapons, will likely insist on the withdrawal of American military bases from their territories. Such a move will jeopardize U.S. naval operations in the Persian Gulf and logistics, intelligence collection and command and control facilities supporting operations in Afghanistan.

As Iraq becomes a battleground for the centuries-long Sunni-Shia conflict, radical Islamic terror organizations will use the territories they control to prepare and launch increasingly deadly terror attacks around the globe against U.S. citizens, businesses and interests.

Reid and his cohorts in Congress who believe "this war is lost" have acted to ensure that it will be. No one asked them: "If we lost, who won?" The answer should be obvious.

Defeat Accomplished!!

Senate Approves Iraq War Funding Bill With Timeline for Troop Pullout

WASHINGTON — A defiant Democratic-controlled Senate passed legislation Thursday that would require the start of troop withdrawals from Iraq by Oct. 1, propelling Congress toward a historic veto showdown with President Bush on the war.

The 51-46 vote was largely along party lines. Like passage of the same bill in the House of Representatives a day earlier, the Senate vote fell far short of the two-thirds margin needed to overturn Bush's threatened veto. Nevertheless, the legislation is the first binding challenge to the war that Democrats have managed to send to Bush since they reclaimed control of both houses of Congress in January.

"The president has failed in his mission to bring peace and stability to the people of Iraq," said Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. He later added: "It's time to bring our troops home from Iraq."

The $124.2 billion (euro91.4 billion) bill requires troop withdrawals to begin Oct. 1, or sooner if the Iraqi government should fail to meet certain benchmarks. The House passed the measure Wednesday by a 218-208 vote.

Cheney Blasts Reid For Using War For Political Gain

WASHINGTON - With tempers flaring Tuesday on the eve of congressional action, Vice President Dick Cheney denounced the Democratic leader of the Senate for pressing for timelines to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq beginning later this year.

Cheney heatedly attacked Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., the Senate majority leader, for making what Cheney called "uninformed and misleading" statements and for orchestrating Democrats' "blind opposition" to the Bush administration's latest policy in Iraq.

Cheney also accused Reid of advocating three different policies for funding the Iraq war and of misrepresenting recommendations by the Iraq Study Group.

Cheney, a hard-nosed Washington insider with experience on the White House staff in the 1970s, Congress in the 1980s and the Pentagon in the early 1990s, accused Reid of "defeatism," adding that legislation requiring phased withdrawal of U.S. combat troops over a six-month period "would guarantee defeat."

Cheney broke with his six-year practice of avoiding news conferences during his regular visits to Capitol Hill to accuse Reid of using the Iraq war to try to gain Democrats additional seats in the 2008 congressional elections.

Corporal Rock Blasts Reid Again: “What Does He Know About Us Losing, Besides What He Wants To Believe?”

Corporal Rock Blasts Reid Again: “What Does He Know About Us Losing, Besides What He Wants To Believe?”

During the process of verifying his identity, the New York Post had an email exchange with now-iconic Corporal Tyler Rock. Rock cc’d me on the exchange. Here is a key excerpt.

Corporal Tyler Rock and his squadmates of “2/2 Martyr Makers”

“the truth is that we have done much more for the people in iraq than is posted to the people. ramadi was a terrible place in the beginning of this deployment (september). now the police in ramadi are doing patrols everyday and coming back with many, many IED’s and other explosive ordinance. the civilians are coming to us and telling us where the insurgents are. that should scream to the people back home that the iraqi’s want our help. they dont want insurgents in the area. all the insurgents are, are thugs and gangs. just in larger scale and more weapons. they terrorize the people to get what they want and the people are fed up with it. we dont “just blow things up”. we care about the people here. we want these people to live as free as we do back home. thats why we are here. if we didnt care then why would we be working so hard to rebuild what is destroyed. we give them water. we give them food. and we respect their way of living.

with the other topic. my opinion is what i already stated in the email to pat. i am a marine in iraq that isnt getting the support from a senator that should support his fellow americans. when was the last time he was here. what does he know about us “losing” besides what he wants to believe. the truth is that we are pushing al qaeda out and we are pushing the insurgency out. we are here to support a nation.”

Corporal Rock is currently out on a several day ambush, and will not be able to write back to those who have emailed him. I will have some further dispatches from past exchanges in the hours ahead.

Marine Officer In Ramadi Demands A Halt To “Irresponsibly Using This War And The Troops For Political Gain”

BREAKING: Marine Officer In Ramadi Demands A Halt To “Irresponsibly Using This War And The Troops For Political Gain”
“The Surge Is Working”

This email was received just moments ago.

1stLt Matthew McGirr USMC wrote:
Pat, I met you back in February 2004 at the Government Center in Ar Ramadi, Iraq
as a platoon commander with Golf 2/5. I just read your article in Maxim and the email from the
1/6 Cpl which I found on the Drudgereport. That Cpl is correct in his assessment. I am also back in Ar
Ramadi, and I have a basis for a comparison of the current situation based on
my experiences in this town two years ago as well as today, April 24, 2007. As
you know this war torn city was once the worst city in Iraq. Today, the
citizens of this city are taking a stand against those extremists and foreign
fighters who are focused only on destroying any chance at a secure and stable
future. Those Iraqis who once fought against us are now joining the ranks of
the Iraqi Police forces. They are taking up arms against the foreign fighters.
They are cleaning up their streets and making an attempt at forming a structured
government. They have come to see us as facilitators of peace and allies in the
defense of their streets. Because of this they have become targets for the
insurgents, yet they continue to show resolve in the face of terrorism. We are
gaining ground. This city is undergoing a sea change. To pull stakes now will
cause this city, the Al Anbar Province, and all of Iraq to fall into the hands
of thugs and terrorists. We will lose the nascent but growing faith of the
Iraqi people, and all of our spent efforts and lost lives and invested treasure
will be for nothing. Their courage will be for nothing.
We are reaching a tipping point in this fight. We have finally learned this
culture. We have finally begun to commit the necessary forces. We have truly
learned to fight a counter-insurgency. Very real gains are being made despite
claims from our Congress that we have already lost. A counter-insurgency battle
is not one of quickly attained and easily recognizeable benchmarks. It is not
won in a year or four. It takes time, resolve, and a willingness to use what we
have learned from past mistakes and expectations. From firsthand experience I
can tell you, this “Surge” is working. We need to continue to support these
people and give them a fighting chance at creating a nation on their own terms.

To echo the sentiments of my fellow Marine in 1/6, the reality of what is
happening on the ground in places like Ramadi is not being reported to the
American public. The pundits and politicians on both sides do not fully grasp
the conditions on the ground here. They are arrogantly and irresponsibly using
this war and the troops who fight in it for political gain and election
currency. They manipulate the truth or do not care enough to seek it out. At
least I know where I stand with the citizens of Ar Ramadi.
If you decide to come this way again, find 2/5. There are Marines out here who
will remember you and who will give you their own opinions. I do not speak for
them, but I know that they recognize the change in this place.
Semper Fi,
Matt

By GEOFF EARLE, Post Correspondent

April 24, 2007 — WASHINGTON - A tough U.S. Marine stationed in one of the most hostile areas of Iraq has a message for Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid: “We need to stay here and help rebuild.”

In raw and emotional language from the bloody front lines, Cpl. Tyler Rock, of the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, skewered Reid for being far removed from the patriotism and progress in Iraq.

“Yeah, and I got a quote for that [expletive] Harry Reid. These families need us here,” Rock vented in an e-mail to Pat Dollard, a Hollywood agent-turned-war reporter who posted the comment on his Web site, www.patdollard.com.

“Obviously [Reid] has never been in Iraq. Or at least the area worth seeing . . . the parts where insurgency is rampant and the buildings are blown to pieces,” Rock wrote.

Based in Camp Lejeune, N.C., Rock catalogued a series of grim daily traumas in Iraq, like getting covered in ash and sleeping under a dirty rug in an Iraqi family’s house, or watching “several terrorists die” on the same strip of pavement.

But he says he is optimistic about the future of a country that he says has “turned to complete s- - -” during a bloody insurgency.

He also spoke admiringly of the risks brave Iraqi citizens take every day.

“If Iraq didn’t want us here then why do we have [Iraqi police] volunteering every day to rebuild their cities?” he asked.

“It sucks that Iraqis have more patriotism for a country that has turned to complete s- - - more than the people in America who drink Starbucks every day.

“We could leave this place and say we are sorry to the terrorists. And then we could wait for 3,000 more American civilians to die before we say, ‘Hey, that’s not nice’ again.”

“And the sad thing is after we WIN this war. People like [Reid] will say he was there for us the whole time.”

Rock’s candid e-mail swept across the Internet after Dollard posted it on his site, and it was picked up by the Drudge Report and numerous other Web sites.

“What does [Reid] know about us ‘losing’ besides what he wants to believe? The truth is that we are pushing al Qaeda out and we are pushing the insurgency out. We are here to support a nation.”

Irate Marine in Ramadi Responds to 'War is Lost' Message
Mon Apr 23 2007 13:07:1 ET

From PatDollard.com:

This Email To Me, Harry, And America, Direct From A Grunt On The Front Lines Of Ramadi, Is Just Hours Old.

Corporal Tyler Rock, 1/6 Charlie Company, on the left, at my old home, Camp Hurricane Point, Ramadi.

A view from OP Horea, “Most Dangerous Spot On Earth”, Downtown Ramadi. I no shit watched several terrorists die, on several different days, on this small strip of asphalt. We also took many IED strikes on it. This photo is from Corporal Rock.

Today, from Corporal Tyler Rock in an outpost in downtown Ramadi. His first sentence is in response to an email from me:

“yeah i know how you feel. its going to be very weird leaving this place and going back to america. weve been here for almost an entire year and have lived in the center of it the whole time. its crazy that when we got here it was so hectic and now its calmed down so much. so it was awesome to be able to see that turn out.

yeah news worth reporting…. well ramadi was once dubbed by everyone as the worst city in the world. but we have done such a great job here that all the families in the area have worked with us on driving out the insurgency and that we work directly with the IA and the IP’s. the city has been cleaned up so well that the IP’s do most of the patrols now and we go out with them to hand out candy and toys to the children. you can tell that the people want us here to protect them from the thugs and gangs (insurgents). granted they would rather have peace and quit but they know that if we arent here they will be thrown around by the insurgents. a good example is this one mission we did. long story short we got blown up in multiple buildings and had to run into a families house. i spent my christmas holidays covered in ash from the mortar fire and the IED’s, sleeping under a dirty rug i found in the house. everyone was sleeping way to close for comfort just to stay warm. anyways. a family was there and they obviously didnt want us there. atleast at first. the daughters were very sick so our corpsman treated them. they didnt have electricity so we got them a generator for power, they were cold so we got them gas heaters, we got them food and water and then we gave them $500. by the end of the week long visit with them we were drinking tea with them. when we left we cleaned their house better than it was when we got there. i even have pictures with the family. they told us that they liked marines and they would help us as much as they could and they gave us some information on the insurgents in the area. we ended up catching a HUGE target down the road from there house because of it.

Part Of A Weapons Cache Seized Recently In Fields Next To What Used To Be An Insurgent Claimed Hospital. Thanks To 1/6, The Insurgents Don’t Claim It Anymore. Zarqawi Had Reportedly Been Treated There.

yeah and i got a qoute for that douche harry reid. these families need us here. obviously he has never been in iraq. or atleast the area worth seeing. the parts where insurgency is rampant and the buildings are blown to pieces. we need to stay here and help rebuild. if iraq didnt want us here then why do we have IP’s voluntering everyday to rebuild their cities. and working directly with us too. same with the IA’s. it sucks that iraqi’s have more patriotism for a country that has turned to complete shit more than the people in america who drink starbucks everyday. we could leave this place and say we are sorry to the terrorists. and then we could wait for 3,000 more american civilians to die before we say “hey thats not nice” again. and the sad thing is after we WIN this war. people like him will say he was there for us the whole time.
and for messages back home. i have a wife back home who is going through a tough time. i just cant wait to be back home and see everyone. haha and i cant wait to go back home and get some starbucks. i love it when those people serve me. hahaha”

HARRY REID TO TROOPS: SCREW YOU

WASHINGTON Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday the war in Iraq is "lost," triggering an angry backlash by Republicans, who said the top Democrat had turned his back on the troops. The bleak assessment - the most pointed yet from Reid - came as the House voted 215-199 to uphold legislation ordering troops out of Iraq next year.

Reid said he told President Bush on Wednesday he thought the war could not be won through military force, although he said the U.S. could still pursue political, economic and diplomatic means to bring peace to Iraq.

"I believe myself that the secretary of state, secretary of defense and - you have to make your own decisions as to what the president knows - (know) this war is lost and the surge is not accomplishing anything as indicated by the extreme violence in Iraq yesterday," said Reid, D-Nev.

Republicans pounced on the comment as evidence, they said, that Democrats do not support the troops.

"I can't begin to imagine how our troops in the field, who are risking their lives every day, are going to react when they get back to base and hear that the Democrat leader of the United States Senate has declared the war is lost," said Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

The exchange came before the House voted to endorse legislation it passed last month that would fund the war in Iraq but require combat missions to end by September 2008. The Senate passed similar, less-sweeping legislation that would set a nonbinding goal of bringing combat troops home by March 31, 2008.

"Our troops won the war clearly, cleanly and quickly," said Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., chairman of the Appropriations Committee. "But now they are stuck in a civil war," and the only solution is a political and diplomatic compromise. "And there is no soldier who can get that done," he added.

The House voted mostly along party lines to insist congressional negotiators trying to reconcile the House and Senate bills retain the firm timetable.

Despite the vote, which was orchestrated by Republicans to try to embarrass Democrats, aides said Democrats were leaning toward accepting the Senate's nonbinding goal. The compromise bill also is expected to retain House provisions preventing military units from being worn out by excessive combat deployments; however, the president could waive these standards if he states so publicly.

Bush pledged to veto either measure and said troops were being harmed by Congress' failure to deliver the funds quickly.

The Pentagon says it has enough money to pay for the Iraq war through June. The Army is taking "prudent measures" aimed at ensuring that delays in the bill financing the war do not harm troop readiness, according to instructions sent to Army commanders and budget officials April 14.

While $70 billion that Congress provided in September for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan has mostly run out, the Army has told department officials to slow the purchase of nonessential repair parts and other supplies, restrict the use of government charge cards and limit travel.

The Army also will delay contracts for facilities repair and environmental restoration, according to instructions from Army Comptroller Nelson Ford.

More stringent steps would be taken in May, such as a hiring freeze and firing temporary employees, but exceptions are made for any war-related activities or anything that "would result immediately in the degradation of readiness standards" for troops in Iraq or those slated for deployment.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino called the Democrats' stance "disturbing" and all but dared Reid to cut off funding for the war.

"If this is his true feeling, then it makes one wonder if he has the courage of his convictions and therefore will decide to de-fund the war," she said.

Reid has left that possibility open. The majority leader supports separate legislation that would cut off funding for combat missions after March 2008. The proposal would allow money to be spent on such efforts as counterterrorism and training Iraqi security forces.

Reid and other Democrats were initially reluctant to discuss such draconian measures to end the war, but no longer.

"I'm not sure much is impossible legislatively," Reid said Thursday. "The American people have indicated . . . that they are fed up with what's going on in congress."

They are using our Troops as political footballs and this HAS to stop! Actually this war was won a long time ago and the only reason we remain in Iraq is the insurgents. Condi Rice Invites Iran To Talk

US urges Iran to join Iraq talks

Condoleezza Rice is urging Iran to join her at a high-level conference on the future of Iraq next week, signalling that Washington is now ready for a serious exchange of views with Tehran after several months of resisting Iran’s advances in the region.

In an interview with the Financial Times, the US secretary of state said it would be a “missed opportunity” if Manouchehr Mottaki, Iran’s foreign minister, did not attend the minister-level meeting to be hosted by Egypt.

Ms Rice denied that the Bush administration’s Iran policy had ever been directed at regime change, insisting that the aim was to “have a change in regime behaviour”.

That “hostile forces” would respond to the US security plan was to be expected, Ms Rice said, blaming al Qaeda, not Iran, for the suicide bombings. She said two more US brigades were still to be deployed, adding the US needed “a little time” to judge the “trend lines”.

Since then there had been a “rebalancing”, she said, particularly after President George W. Bush’s speech on January 10 announcing the extra troops and a more aggressive response to Iran’s perceived role in arming and training Iraqi Shia militia.

Analysts said it remained to be seen whether the US had achieved what Robert Gates, the defence secretary, said in January was the “leverage” it needed before engaging Iran.

Iran says it will decide on its attendance at the May 3-4 conference after meeting Hoshyar Zebari, Iraq’s foreign minister, this week. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman on Sunday noted a “softening” in Ms Rice’s rhetoric. But he added that any “shift” should be put into practice.

Now see Ms Pelosi? That's the way it's done. You just let Condi Rice be the "Sectretary Of State" and you sit up there and keep doing whatever it is you arent doing up there in Congress. How about getting back to funding the Troops, that would be nice Syriana Pelosi.

Westboro Baptist Playtime Needs To Come To An End

Westboro Baptist Freaks To Protest VA Tech Funerals

April 2007 has been a month ripe with scandals, heated social debate and tragedy. The Virginia Tech massacre has illustrated the capability of barbarism in human beings, and unfortunately, such illustration happens on a daily basis. It is not difficult to scan the news channels and websites to find a daily death toll throughout the world that easily tops the 100 mark. Such a number is the result of murders alone, and many try desperately to understand what brings a person to take innocent lives. Sadly, to truly understand the mentality needed to massacre groups of people, a person would need to possess such a warped mind-set.

Nevertheless, deluded mentalities are not only held by troubled murderers. The Westboro Baptist Church (God Hates Fags) has announced on one of their many websites that they plan to protest the funerals of the Virginia Tech students. The following is taken from their site www.godhatesamerica.com:

This is just a sample of what these freaks have in store:

"WBC will preach at the funerals of the Virginia Tech students killed on campus during a shooting rampage April 16, 2007. You describe this as monumental horror, but you know nothing of horror -- yet. Your bloody tyrant Bush says he is 'horrified' by it all. You know nothing of horror -- yet. Your true horror is coming. "They shall also gird themselves with sackloth, and horror shall cover them; and shame shall be upon all faces, and baldness upon all their heads" (Eze. 7:18).

RUN FRED RUN !!!!!

WHAT FRED THOMPSON WANT'S YOU TO KNOW

!!!! RUN FRED RUN !!!!

WASHINGTON - Republican Fred Thompson, the actor-politician who is considering a bid for president, said Wednesday he was diagnosed with lymphoma more than two years ago but the cancer shouldn't affect his life expectancy.
In an interview with Fox News Channel's Neil Cavuto, the former Tennessee senator, 64, said doctors discovered that he had non- Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2004. He said the disease is in remission with no illness or symptoms.

"I wouldn't be doing this if I wasn't satisfied in my own mind as to the nature of it and the fact that not only will I have an average lifespan but in the meantime I will not be affected in anyway by it," Thompson said. "Now of course nobody knows the future but that has been in the history for almost three years now in terms of no symptoms and no sickness."

His disclosure comes just weeks after Elizabeth Edwards, wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, revealed that her cancer had returned. White House spokesman Tony Snow recently underwent surgery for cancer that had spread to his liver.

Cancer has touched past and present presidential candidates. John McCain carries scars after three episodes of melanoma, the most aggressive form of skin cancer. His 2008 Republican rival, Rudy Giuliani, had prostate cancer, which also afflicted 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry and 1996 Republican nominee Bob Dole.

In 1992, Democratic primary candidate Paul Tsongas was the first presidential candidate to run as a cancer survivor, having undergone a radical bone-marrow transplant six years earlier after lymphoma forced an end to his Senate career. Tsongas later died from a complication related to the treatment for the disease's recurrence.

"I have friends in politics, some in Congress, some running for president, and others who have successfully dealt with cancer," Thompson said. "It is certainly no respecter of persons and totally non-partisan."

Lymphoma is an immune-system cancer that strikes more than 71,000 Americans a year, and kills more than 19,000 of them. The vast majority have the non-Hodgkin's form of lymphoma, a term that encompasses more than 30 different subtypes of the disease.

Some of these subtypes are termed "indolent," meaning they typically respond well to treatment—patients often go into remission for long periods, but the disease is not cured and may need to be battled back again periodically.

Survival varies widely, depending on the subtype of lymphoma. But overall, five-year survival for the non-Hodgkin's group of lymphomas is 63 percent, according to the American Cancer Society.

The former senator is an actor who has played many roles, including president of the United States, director of the CIA, an admiral and currently, a tough district attorney on NBC's "Law & Order."

Thompson has said he would consider running for president in 2008, depending on how the rest of the Republican field shakes out.

"I'm just going to wait and see what happens," Thompson told Fox last month. "I wanted to see how my colleagues who are on the campaign trail do now, what they say, what they emphasize, what they're addressing, and how successful they are in doing that, and whether or not they can carry the ball in next November."

Thompson's rise to prominence began three decades ago, when he served as minority counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee. He famously asked one the key questions of the proceedings: "Mr. Butterfield, are you aware of the installation of any listening devices in the Oval Office of the President?"

That led to the disclosure of the Watergate tapes.

Several years later, Thompson represented Marie Ragghianti, the head of the Tennessee Parole Board who was fired after exposing a pardon- selling scheme involving aides for then-Gov. Ray Blanton. Thompson played himself in the 1985 movie "Marie" based on the episode and got generally positive reviews.

Starting in the late 1980s, Thompson got roles in numerous movies, including "No Way Out," "The Hunt for Red October," "Cape Fear and "In the Line of Fire" and in television series.

Thompson was elected to the Senate in 1994 to fill the seat of Al Gore, who had been elected vice president. He won re-election to the Senate easily in 1996, but his daughter died of a heart attack during that term and he announced a couple months later that he wouldn't seek re-election.

After leaving the Senate, Thompson returned to acting, with his most prominent role as district attorney Arthur Branch on "Law & Order."

NANCY PELOSI MAY HEAD TO IRAN

Pelosi, Lantos may be interested in diplomatic trip to Iran

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Tom Lantos, D-San Mateo, just back from a trip to Syria that sparked sharp criticism from Republicans and the Bush administration, suggested Tuesday that they may be interested in taking another diplomatic trip - to open a dialogue with Iran.

The Democratic speaker from San Francisco and Lantos, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, were asked at a press conference in San Francisco Tuesday whether on the heels of their recent trip to the Middle East they would be interested in extending their diplomacy in the troubled region with a visit to Iran.

"Speaking just for myself, I would be ready to get on a plane tomorrow morning, because however objectionable, unfair and inaccurate many of (Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's) statements are, it is important that we have a dialogue with him,'' Lantos said. "Speaking for myself, I'm ready to go -- and knowing the speaker, I think that she might be.''

Pelosi did not dispute that statement, and noted that Lantos -- a Hungarian-born survivor of the Holocaust -- brought "great experience, knowledge and judgment" to the recent bipartisan congressional delegation trip to Israel, the Palestinian territories, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia in addition to Syria.

"I find the president of Iran's remarks to be so repulsive that they are outside the circle of civilized human behavior,'' Pelosi said, referring to Ahmadinejad's past comments that Israel should be wiped off the face of the map and his questioning of the existence of the Holocaust.

"But a person of Mr. Lantos' stature and personal experience is saying that -- even as a Holocaust survivor and even recognizing the outrageous statements of the president of Iran -- it's important to have dialogue. I think that speaks volumes.''

Pelosi was criticized by President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and other members of the administration for meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad, who the administration said has meddled in the politics and fomented violence in Iraq and Lebanon and is a state sponsor of terrorism. Other Republicans, however, also visited Syria during the current congressional recess. One of those lawmakers, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista (San Diego County), visited Syria a day after the Pelosi delegation and said the Bush administration should be talking with Assad as a way of trying to bring peace to the region.

The president also has tried to isolate Iran, saying its government, too, has aided attacks against Americans in Iraq and elsewhere while ramping up its efforts to build nuclear weapons.

Lantos said that for more than a decade, he has been trying to obtain a visa to visit Tehran with the help of former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan -- and to date neither he nor any other member of Congress has been successful.

Pelosi said that throughout the congressional delegation's recent Middle East trip, "every place we went we had a constant message: the safety and security of Israel, fighting terrorism.''

"There was, of course, a shadow over all of it, Iran: Iran's support of terrorist groups is something that must be stopped,'' she said. "Iran's quest for a nuclear weapon is something that must not happen and we must stop them with the strongest of diplomatic measures.''

Lantos noted that "with the speaker's support,'' he has co-sponsored legislation in the House that calls for making available to all countries -- including Iran -- nuclear fuel for peaceful purposes under international oversight by establishing a "nuclear fuel bank."

"So if the Iranian president says that he is developing (nuclear material) for peaceful purposes, we are assisting him in that process,'' said Lantos, who anticipated the legislation could pass as early as May.

Megastars To Rock The World In Giant Live Earth Concerts

Madonna, Genesis and the re-formed Police will top a galaxy of stars rocking the world against climate change in seven mammoth concerts around the globe on July 7, organizers said Tuesday.

More than 100 acts will perform in the giant 24-hour Live Earth concert relay -- the brainchild of former US vice-president Al Gore -- spanning Sydney, Tokyo, Shanghai, Johannesburg, London, Rio de Janeiro and New York.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Genesis top the bill at London's Wembley Stadium while Bon Jovi, The Police and Smashing Pumpkins will headline the concert at New York's Giants Stadium, organisers said.

"Live Earth -- the concerts for a climate in crisis", dreamed up by politician-turned-environmental campaigner Gore, are intended to highlight the threat of climate change.

Organisers hope the concerts will raise awareness of the issue just as the 1985 Live Aid concerts raised awareness of starvation in Africa. They aim to reach over two billion people on television, radio and the Internet.

In London, Duran Duran, the Foo Fighters, the Black Eyed Peas, Keane, Snow Patrol, Bloc Party and the Beastie Boys will also perform at the 90,000-seater newly-redeveloped Wembley stadium.

Razorlight, Corinne Bailey Rae, Damien Rice, David Gray, James Blunt, John Legend and Paolo Nutini are among the other confirmed acts who will take the stage.

The New York concert features Kanye West, Roger Waters, Dave Matthews Band, Kelly Clarkson, Fall Out Boy and Melissa Etheridge.

They will take the stage in the 80,000-seater Giants Stadium alongside Alicia Keys, Ludacris, John Mayer, Akon, AFI, Rihanna and KT Tunstall.

"By attracting an audience of billions we hope Live Earth will launch a global campaign giving a critical mass of people around the world the tools they need to help solve the climate crisis," Gore said.

"We hope the energy created by Live Earth will jump start a massive public education effort.

"Live Earth will help us reach a tipping point that's needed to move corporations and governments to take decisive action to solve the climate crisis."

Starting in Sydney and ending in New York, the event will deliver a call to action and the solutions needed to answer the call, organisers said.

"This monster line-up will ensure Live Earth meets our goal of bringing together people from around the world to combat the climate crisis," said Live Earth founder Kevin Wall.

"Live Earth will not only span all seven continents, but the musicians who have answered our call span multiple genres and generations.

"Live Earth will be a monumental event both in terms of entertainment and in turning the tide against global warming."

Proceeds from the concerts will go towards a foundation to combat climate change. Tickets for the London gig will cost 55 pounds (108 dollars, 81 euros).

The other Live Earth concerts will take place at Sydney's Aussie Stadium, Tokyo Stadium, a Shanghai venue to be confirmed, Johannesburg's Cradle of Human Kind and Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana beach.

Gore is the author of a bestselling book on global warming "An Inconvenient Truth," which was made into the blockbuster documentary which won a pair of Oscars in February.

The last mammoth international concert series was Live 8 in July 2005, designed to pressure leaders from the Group of Eight industrialised nations to change their approach to poor countries.

It took up the baton from the unprecedented Live Aid, held at Wembley and at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia in the United States.

Dems Budget Package Biggest Tax Hike In US History

The Senate Budget:

A $2,641 Per Household Tax Increase and No Entitlement Reforms

The Senate Democrats, writing their first budget resolution since winning control in Congress last fall, have produced a budget blueprint that:

Raises taxes by $900 billion over five years and a projected $3.3 trillion over ten years;
Translates into a tax increase of $2,641 per household annually over the next decade;
Includes 22 reserve funds that could be used to raise taxes by hundreds of billions more;
Increases discretionary spending by nearly 9 percent in FY 2008 and does not terminate a single program;
Completely ignores the impending tsunami of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid costs;
Creates rules that bias the budget toward tax increases; and
Employs the same gimmicks that Congress criticized the President for using in his budget proposal.
The House budget resolution projects nearly the same 2008-2012 tax revenue as the Senate and would increase discretionary spending by an additional $69 billion. This paper focuses on the Senate's irresponsible budget blueprint.

$2,641 Per Household Tax Increase

The Senate budget projects 2008-2012 tax revenues of $15,007 billion—$899 billion higher than the $14,108 that would be collected under today's tax rates. The Senate Budget Committee does not specify the source of these higher revenues. However, the total almost exactly matches the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimate of 2008-2012 tax revenues if the Bush tax cuts expire, all other temporary tax cuts expire, and the alternative minimum tax (AMT) is not fixed ($15,002 billion).[1]

Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-ND) has stated that his budget would allow some of the current tax cuts to be extended as long as they are offset (specifically, fixing the AMT through 2008). However, increasing some tax rates as the price of keeping other tax policies unchanged is still a tax increase. And while Senator Conrad has also asserted that large amounts of revenue could be found by closing the tax gap, anything more than a few billion dollars annually seems overly optimistic considering the harsh methods needed to increase compliance. Either way, the Senate budget would seize $899 billion more from Americans than is taken under today's tax rates.

That's just the five-year total. Projected over the ten-year period, the expiration (or required offset) of all existing tax cuts would raise projected revenues by $3,268 billion[2]—easily the largest peacetime tax increase in American history.[3] Over the ten-year period, the average household's taxes would increase by $2,641 annually, or 12 percent above current tax levels. Tax revenues would spike from 18.5 percent of GDP today to 19.8 percent by 2012 and then 20.1 percent in 2017—the second highest level since World War II.

And even that may not be all. The Senate budget contains 22 "reserve funds" that would give Congress virtually unlimited authority to raise taxes further if Members decide to increase spending above the budget resolution's spending targets. By the time Congress is finished, the tax increase could easily top $1 trillion over five years and $4 trillion over ten years.

Of course, lawmakers have denied that their budget raises taxes, arguing that its revenue projections are tied to "current law." But current law assumes that tax rates will increase in 2011 and that the AMT will catch 19 million more Americans this year alone. That these future tax increases are already scheduled as part of current law does not make them even less of a tax increase. Even Senator Conrad once said that "a tax increase to me is when you increase the taxes that people are paying now."[4] By his own standard, the Senate budget will raise taxes.

Lest any Senator try to avert these tax increases, the budget contains a multitude of new rules designed to make sure that they occur. Any Senator offering legislation to extend current tax rates would be "violating" four different Senate budget rules, each of which would require 60 votes to overcome before the Senate would even be allowed to vote on the legislation itself. These obstacles would apply to merely keeping current tax rates in place. By contrast, current entitlement spending formulas, which are forcing entitlement spending up by 6 percent to 7 percent annually, would continue automatically without any restraints.

Ignoring the Entitlement Crisis

The coming collision of 77 million retiring baby boomers with Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid represents the greatest economic challenge of our era. What Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has recently called the "calm before the storm" will end abruptly on January 1, 2008—less than one year from now—when the first baby boomers become eligible for early Social Security benefits.[5] Three years later, they will become eligible for Medicare. Over the following decades, the cost of these programs will leap from 8.7 percent of GDP to 19.0 percent. Without reform, this 10.3 percent of GDP cost increase would require either raising taxes by the current equivalent of $11,651 per household or eliminating every other government program. Even these changes would not solve the problem over the long term as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid spending continues to grow.[6]

Senator Conrad acknowledged this crisis recently on CBS's "60 Minutes." He said, "They know in large measure here, Republicans and Democrats, that we are on a course that doesn't add up" but that Congress does not address the issue "[b]ecause it's always easier not to. [I]t's always easier to defer, to kick the can down the road to avoid making choices. You know, you get in trouble in politics when you make choices."[7]

Yet kicking the can down the road and avoiding choices is exactly what the Senate budget blueprint does. Specifically, it fails to offer a single reform to pare the $39 trillion in unfunded Social Security and Medicare costs over the next 75 years. Worse, the Senate rejects the President's commonsense proposal to shave $8 trillion off this obligation by reducing Medicare Part B and D subsidies for the wealthiest seniors and tweaking payment formulas. By delaying the inevitable reforms, the Senate budget will drive up ultimate costs by hundreds of billions of dollars and give near-retirees less time to adjust their retirement strategies to the coming fiscal realities.

Spending Increases

While ignoring the entitlement crisis, the Senate budget would increase FY 2008 non-emergency discretionary spending by $18 billion over the President's proposal of $932 billion—a nearly 9 percent increase in discretionary spending over the FY 2007 level.[8] Over five years, the Senate would increase spending by $193 billion over the President's proposed level. That does not even include the $21 billion in additional FY 2007 spending the Senate is proposing to add to the national security emergency bill that was intended to fund the troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.[9]

Most of the increase would be in domestic discretionary spending, but these programs have hardly been starved for funding. From 2001 trough 2006, non-security discretionary spending increased by 40 percent (21 percent after inflation). In fact, since 1990, non-security discretionary spending has increased three times as fast as defense and homeland security spending.[10] In particular, recent discretionary spending increases for education and health have been among the largest ever. Furthermore, Congress continues to appropriate money for wasteful and unnecessary programs like the Advanced Technology Program, which spends much of its $150 million budget subsidizing Fortune 500 companies.[11] The combination of recent spending increases and wasteful spending means that Congress should be able to work within the President's proposed discretionary spending total.

Gimmicks

In January, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), House Budget Committee Chairman John Spratt (D-SC) and Senator Conrad send a letter to President Bush urging him to resist the use of gimmicks in his budget request.[12] The letter called on the President to "reasonably account...for...predictable costs that have been omitted in past budgets," likely referring to the costs in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as fixing the AMT. The group also urged that the President's budget "realistically project" budget deficit levels and "be based on fiscal discipline that is sustained over the long-term." When the President released his budget proposal, these lawmakers criticized the President for failing these standards and relying on "deception" to balance the budget by 2012.[13]

Yet the Senate Democrats' budget employs the same sort of gimmicks the Democrats decried. It balances the budget by 2012, assuming no Iraq and Afghanistan spending after 2009. Nor does the Senate budget account for fixing the AMT after 2008. Thus, the Senate budget relies on the same gimmicks they earlier opposed. In regard to the group's call for long-term fiscal discipline, the Senate budget ignores the issue completely. By the Congress's own standards, the Senate budget proposal is fiscally irresponsible.

Conclusion
The Senate budget relies on massive tax increases while ignoring the coming tsunami in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid spending. This classic tax-and-spend budget would likely assure the expiration of the tax cuts that have helped to create jobs and promote economic growth.[14] The result of the Senate budget would likely be higher tax rates on families and businesses, slower economic growth, and a nation woefully unprepared to fund the coming retirement benefits of 77 million baby boomers. Lawmakers should go back and write a budget that deals realistically with coming entitlement costs and does not raise taxes to fund more government spending.

Fred Thompson Starts Campaign Effort

Former Sen. Fred Thompson has begun assembling the core of a campaign team in preparation for a possible run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.

While the "Law & Order” actor has not decided whether he will run or not, "he is getting more serious every day,” an adviser told The Politico.

"He is now starting to talk to people to really calibrate what it would take to run a successful campaign. He’s talking to some of the top unaligned strategists and fund-raisers.”

Thompson – who did not seek re-election as a senator from Tennessee in 2002 – has also met with major Republican players who work for other presidential campaigns, sources told The Politico.

Thompson placed third among Republicans in a recent USA Today/Gallup poll, garnering 12 percent of the vote behind former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and Sen. John McCain from Arizona. It was the first Gallup poll taken after Thompson announced on March 11 that he may run for the White House.

Advisers say Thompson has been encouraged by the response at a time when many conservative Republicans are unhappy with the GOP front-runners for 2008.
