HARRY REID TO TROOPS: SCREW YOU

WASHINGTON Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday the war in Iraq is "lost," triggering an angry backlash by Republicans, who said the top Democrat had turned his back on the troops. The bleak assessment - the most pointed yet from Reid - came as the House voted 215-199 to uphold legislation ordering troops out of Iraq next year.

Reid said he told President Bush on Wednesday he thought the war could not be won through military force, although he said the U.S. could still pursue political, economic and diplomatic means to bring peace to Iraq.

"I believe myself that the secretary of state, secretary of defense and - you have to make your own decisions as to what the president knows - (know) this war is lost and the surge is not accomplishing anything as indicated by the extreme violence in Iraq yesterday," said Reid, D-Nev.

Republicans pounced on the comment as evidence, they said, that Democrats do not support the troops.

"I can't begin to imagine how our troops in the field, who are risking their lives every day, are going to react when they get back to base and hear that the Democrat leader of the United States Senate has declared the war is lost," said Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

The exchange came before the House voted to endorse legislation it passed last month that would fund the war in Iraq but require combat missions to end by September 2008. The Senate passed similar, less-sweeping legislation that would set a nonbinding goal of bringing combat troops home by March 31, 2008.

"Our troops won the war clearly, cleanly and quickly," said Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., chairman of the Appropriations Committee. "But now they are stuck in a civil war," and the only solution is a political and diplomatic compromise. "And there is no soldier who can get that done," he added.

The House voted mostly along party lines to insist congressional negotiators trying to reconcile the House and Senate bills retain the firm timetable.

Despite the vote, which was orchestrated by Republicans to try to embarrass Democrats, aides said Democrats were leaning toward accepting the Senate's nonbinding goal. The compromise bill also is expected to retain House provisions preventing military units from being worn out by excessive combat deployments; however, the president could waive these standards if he states so publicly.

Bush pledged to veto either measure and said troops were being harmed by Congress' failure to deliver the funds quickly.

The Pentagon says it has enough money to pay for the Iraq war through June. The Army is taking "prudent measures" aimed at ensuring that delays in the bill financing the war do not harm troop readiness, according to instructions sent to Army commanders and budget officials April 14.

While $70 billion that Congress provided in September for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan has mostly run out, the Army has told department officials to slow the purchase of nonessential repair parts and other supplies, restrict the use of government charge cards and limit travel.

The Army also will delay contracts for facilities repair and environmental restoration, according to instructions from Army Comptroller Nelson Ford.

More stringent steps would be taken in May, such as a hiring freeze and firing temporary employees, but exceptions are made for any war-related activities or anything that "would result immediately in the degradation of readiness standards" for troops in Iraq or those slated for deployment.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino called the Democrats' stance "disturbing" and all but dared Reid to cut off funding for the war.

"If this is his true feeling, then it makes one wonder if he has the courage of his convictions and therefore will decide to de-fund the war," she said.

Reid has left that possibility open. The majority leader supports separate legislation that would cut off funding for combat missions after March 2008. The proposal would allow money to be spent on such efforts as counterterrorism and training Iraqi security forces.

Reid and other Democrats were initially reluctant to discuss such draconian measures to end the war, but no longer.

"I'm not sure much is impossible legislatively," Reid said Thursday. "The American people have indicated . . . that they are fed up with what's going on in congress."

Way to destroy Troop Morale Harry!! What is it with the Democrats? Why on earth would they want our Troops to lose this war so badly? They are using our Troops as political footballs and this HAS to stop! Actually this war was won a long time ago and the only reason we remain in Iraq is the insurgents. Harry Reid knows this, and basically just told our Troops Screw You! Impeach this dumbass!

The reason Dems are doing this is that they want to neuter our military and U.S. foreign policy the way they did in the Vietnam era.

They want to make it so our military will never be used for anything but delivering meals on wheels to the countries THEY approve of.

Congressman Tom Tancredo came out with a very strong statement saying Reid should be held responsible for the death of every American killed in Iraq from now on.

I would go one step further and charge Reid for murdering U.S. troops by encouraging our enemy.

You said it best, he is a crybaby.

He will just have to get over it.

He isnt worth the attention :-)

Gayle, Anonymous, and Trek,

Evidently I made someone mad on another blog that Trek has mentioned there. One that I dont visit, have no clue to who this person is, and why he copied our posts.

That person has taken the message I left Trek on his site and copied and pasted it to his own site.

Naturally we are joking here about the rope, the hanging and a tree. This person should have followed me back here and read all the posts before jumping to conclusions and acting in a foolhardy manner.

I am NOT however joking about Reid being a traitor and and should be impeached.

I am inviting this person WHOEVER YOU ARE to come on over here and debate me. And well the rest of us if anyone else wants to get in on this debate.

I am not going to give this person the time of day on his blog because I dont know this person from Adam.

And I'm not the kind of person to copy other peoples posts and print them on the front of my blog which I think is extremly childish.

So I have moved this post further to the top so whoever this person is can come on down!

Until then this person can bite me!

April 22, 2007 6:18 PM
Blogger Phillybits said...

I'll bite. It's not going to be on the topic of Reid and his comments since that wasn't what my post was about.

My post was about the use of the type of rhetoric you and countless conservatives use day in and day out - the whole "Rope. Tree. Whatever." which has seriously become so cliche, I don't even know why you folks continue to use it to describe your angst.

Furthermore, I wasn't even calling you or TrekMedic out (and indicated as such) and was instead (again) making a case about the use of such rhetoric:

"His/her argument with Reid aside, he/she can say whatever he/she wants because honestly, I'm not using this post to single him or her out but it's the comment that was left by a reader that made me think a little bit more about the use of this specific "rhetorical" device:"

If you (or Trek) had a problem with that post, you could've commented on the subject and content of the post and/or the use of the "Rope.Tree..." saying but instead, you've chosen to insult me and misconstrue my post as some type of attack on you, which anyone with even mediocre reading and comprehension skills should be able to understand was not an attack on either you or Trek.

I had no reason to follow you back here to see that it was a joke. It wasn't about your specific use of it and whether or not you were serious or not. I'm not surprised Trek chose to misrepresent it this way (he has a habit of misrepresenting a lot of things, especially double standards) but here we are, debating the source for a post instead of the content of a post.

Congratulations to both you and Trek for being very good Republicans turning attention away from what the real issue was.

However, one thing I will opine about is your idea that your comments are not mine to copy and paste.

That's a very, very funny thing to say on a public website where no copyright indication exists and yet here, you have lifted an entire article from MyWay which is copyrighted:

"Copyright 2007 Associated Press. All right reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed."

Let's look at something:

"Welcome to the My Way website (the "Site"). When using the Site and/or any related services (including the My Way email service) (the Site and related services are hereinafter referred to as the "My Way Service"), you agree to the terms and conditions set forth herein (the "Terms of Service"). If you do not agree to these Terms of Service, you are not authorized either to use the My Way Service (including any portion thereof) or to sign-up for Site membership."

and under Content and Materials

"You may not modify, publish, transmit, participate in the transfer or sale, create derivative works, or in any way exploit, any of the Content, in whole or in part, except that you may download one copy of the materials on any single computer for your personal, non-commercial home use only, provided you keep intact all copyright and other proprietary notices. Modification of the materials or use of the materials for any other purpose, including use of any such material on any other web site or networked computer environment is strictly prohibited."

However, let's give you the benefit of the doubt because My Way was displaying Associated Press information. What do they say about that?

"Co-Branded Pages
We also offer you access to "co-branded" services that are jointly provided by us and our content providers. In certain cases, services on this Site will contain My Way branding, but might not be hosted by us. You should follow the privacy link on the page to determine which company's privacy policy protects the information you enter on the page."

Well, let's refer to the AP's privacy policy, since it is their work.

"All requests for republication of AP material must be in writing, clearly stating the purpose and manner in which the material will be used. All republished material must carry AP credit. Unless specifically noted otherwise, all permission is given for one-time use only. No political candidate, political party, political action committee, polemical organization, or any group formed for partisan purpose may use AP copy in any publication. There may be a fee for reprint use."

You haven't credited the AP, I doubt you sought permission, and since you lifted the entire article, Fair Use would seem to be a rather poor defense. I don't know how bloggers fall into this category, but you're also using it for partisan purposes.

I don't know if you make money with this website (at least Blogger is free), but if you do, that might be something you'd also want to consider before you lift an entire article and provide insufficient credit.

Marie, I'd be far less concerned with my posting of a screenshot of your 8 word comment than your uncredited lifting of an entire Associated Press article.

At the risk of sounding like a hypocrite myself, I'm very well aware of the fact that bloggers all over the place, myself included, cite pieces of articles without giving proper and lawful credit to a specific organization, choosing to instead link a few words of text to the article or website being sourced.

Citing entire articles, though, is a different story.

Spare me your copyright law crap also. I post a link (If you would read) to everything I post, sometimes it's the article, sometimes it's a part of one, I alway's provide a link.

Democrats’ hatred and envy is so deep, they care not what it will do to the country. They will never look in the mirror for where to place the proper blame. They have divided this country, for the sole purpose of power-grabbing and poll-pandering. No wonder they love Eurotrash style politics - they are the epitome of trash themselves

RJ,

Your welcome for the Link.

I'll tell ya if My Senator Jim Inhofe had his way Harry Reid would be gone.

It's going to take us in the Blogosphere to keep this going, but since we havent heard much of a peep out of Harry Reid since the day he bashed Cheney, the Liberals are all trying to make this "Go Away".

The Troops wont let this go away however, but then again the media wont keep going about this.

So it will get buried under the rug and Reid gets away with it again.

The Media make me sick

Yes, you are being presumptuious about me as 1) I don't comment at HuffPo and 2) I have not rejoiced at the near accidents or attacks against any Republicans.

As for liberal talking points, I didn't get my Media Matters bulletin on that one; that post came straight from me.

Maybe you havent been around the blogosphere that long. It's common courtesy that you dont take another person's comment's capture them and post them as some form of story on your blog.

I might say the same of you, if you had a problem with mine or Trek's comments you could have commented about the comments you had a problem with.

And this is again where you've missed the point of my post. As I stated before, my beef was not with you or with Trek but the phrase that conservatives at large use to express their displeasure. Believe me - if I wanted to take the issue up with you, I would have but my issue was not with any specific person using it. That was explained on my post, that was explained in my earlier comment here, and yet you still have failed to realize that.

Maybe you havent been around the blogosphere that long. It's common courtesy that you dont take another person's comment's capture them and post them as some form of story on your blog.

Sorry, been blogging over two years and never heard that one before. Common courtesy, though, huh?

So much for accountability then, wouldn't you say?

What you did was capture a screenshot of a comment section on Trek's blog and used it in a post of your own. Kinda stupid dont you think? But then I should expect nothing less from the left.

Yes, that's exactly what I did. And no, I don't think it's stupid either. It was a visible example of the type of rhetoric that my post dealt with. I suppose I could've used any of probably thousands of easily found examples of the same type of rhetoric but as it happened, I fell across yours.

Perhaps if you're so upset about being singled out for using that type of rhetoric, you shouldn't say it. But don't let me stop you - please, continue saying stupid things like that.

Oh by the way I saw the Picture of President Bush dressed up like Ronald McDonald.

Isn't it great? I think it's hilarious and is a good embodiment of the man.
