Venezuela protests TV clampdown by Chavez

CARACAS- President Hugo Chavez's clampdown on opposition television stations widened Monday as police used rubber bullets and tear gas on demonstrators protesting what they called an attack on free speech.

Venezuela levied charges against US cable network CNN for linking Chavez to Al-Qaeda terror network headed by Osama bin Laden. The move came just hours after the shutting-down of the country's oldest television station, the openly anti-government Radio Caracas Television network.

The government also accused Venezuelan TV network Globovision of encouraging any would-be assassins of the president.



Information Minister William Lara showed at a news conference what he said was CNN footage of Chavez juxtaposed with images of an Al-Qaeda leader.

"CNN broadcast a lie which linked President Chavez to violence and murder," Lara said.

In addition, CNN aired a story about the Venezuelan protests using images taken from an unrelated story in Mexico, Lara said.

CNN issued a statement late Monday saying they "strongly deny" being "engaged in a campaign to discredit or attack Venezuela."

The news network acknowledged a video mix-up, and "aired a detailed correction and expressed regret for the involuntary error."

Regarding the Al-Qaeda leader, the network said that "unrelated news stories can be juxtaposed in a given program segment just as a newspaper page or a news web site may have unconnected stories adjacent to each other."

The Venezuelan government also filed charges against local network Globovision, alleging it indirectly encouraged Chavez's murder by airing footage of the 1981 assassination attempt on the late pope John Paul II.




"In my view, this television network, in this specific part of its programming, committed the offense of incitement to assassination, against the Venezuelan head of state," Lara said.

The charges came amid protests against Chavez's shutdown of RCTV, a privately-owned broadcaster of popular comedy and drama shows that was boldly critical of Chavez.

After 54 years on the air, RCTV went dark at midnight Sunday after the government refused to renew its license. It was promptly replaced by TVes, a state-backed station which began broadcasting cultural shows.

On Monday several people were injured as police in Caracas fired rubber bullets and tear gas to put down a demonstration against the RCTV shutdown, following the fifth straight day of protests.

A policeman's leg was broken in the fracas, a police official said.

RCTV was replaced by TVes, a state-backed "socialist" station which opened with cultural shows. Chavez supporters held a huge, night-to-dawn public party outside the network studios to celebrate the birth of the new "socialist television" and the end of the bitterly anti-Chavez media outlet.

TVes president Lil Rodriguez said the move reflected "our sovereignty."

The government will now control two of the four nationwide broadcasters in Venezuela, one of them state-owned VTV.

In an interview with VTV, Interior Minister Pedro Carreno accused the opposition of mounting a plot against the government, devised by "the empire," a term often used to describe the United States.

He also accused demonstrators of trying "to develop a plan for violence in the country," and added: "The government also has its plan. And it is working."

However, the RCTV closure brought sweeping denunciations from inside Venezuela and out.

One of the country's leading dailies, El Nacional, denounced it as "end of pluralism in Venezuela," and slammed the government's growing "information monopoly."





The archbishop of the city of Merida, Baltasar Porras Cardoso, compared Chavez to Hitler, Mussolini and Cuban leader Fidel Castro who is a close friend of the left-wing Venezuelan president.

"This is the first time in eight years (of Chavez as president) that the university students hold a massive protest," said Leopoldo Lopez, an opposition leader and neighborhood mayor.

The EU's German presidency said it worried Venezuela let the network's broadcast license expire "without holding an open competition" for a successor station.

The media rights group Reporters Without Borders said the move was "a serious violation of freedom of expression and a major setback to democracy and pluralism."

RCTV's former owner, Marcel Granier, said Chavez was driven by "a megalomaniacal desire to establish a totalitarian dictatorship" in an interview with US-based Univision television.

The US Senate last week unanimously approved a resolution condemning the move.

Fred Thompson will run, advisers say

Fred Dalton Thompson is planning to enter the presidential race over the Fourth of July holiday, announcing that week that he has already raised several million dollars and is being backed by insiders from the past three Republican administrations, Thompson advisers told The Politico.

Thompson, the "Law and Order" star and former U.S. senator from Tennessee, has been publicly coy, even as people close to him have been furiously preparing for a late entry into the wide-open contest. But the advisers said Thompson dropped all pretenses on Tuesday afternoon during a conference call with more than 100 potential donors, each of whom was urged to raise about $50,000.

Thompson's formal announcement is planned for Nashville. Organizers say the red pickup truck that was a hallmark of Thompson's first Senate race will begin showing up in Iowa and New Hampshire as an emblem of what they consider his folksy, populist appeal.

Edwards Slams War On Terrorism As "Bumper Sticker"

The U.S.-led war on terrorism is "a bumper sticker, not a plan"

In an address to the Council on Foreign Relations, Edwards urged the U.S. Congress to use its funding power to force an immediate pullout of up to 50,000 U.S. combat troops from Iraq, then a full withdrawal within a year.

Edwards, who was the Democratic Party's vice presidential candidate in 2004, said as president he would close the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, restore the ability of detainees to take legal action against unlawful imprisonment and ban torture.



"The war on terror is a slogan designed only for politics, not a strategy to make America safe. It's a bumper sticker, not a plan," Edwards said. "It has damaged our alliances and weakened our standing in the world."

"By framing this as a 'war,' we have walked straight into the trap that the terrorists have set -- that we are engaged in some kind of clash of civilizations and a war against Islam," said the former senator from North Carolina.

In an interview with CNN, Edwards said President George W. Bush and his administration were responsible for Osama bin Laden still being at large.

"The reason there are terrorists actively engaged in what's happening in Iraq right now is because of the mess George Bush and his administration have created there," he added.

Bush's homeland security adviser, Fran Townsend, dismissed Edwards' comments as "irresponsible, ... offensive and outrageous."

Rolling Thunder Rumbles Past White House

WASHINGTON President Bush likes a serene White House most Sundays. Every now and then, though, he is ready for rumble.

Leaders of Rolling Thunder, the motorcycling group that raises awareness about missing veterans, roared up the mansion's driveway Sunday. Bush, just back from a weekend at Camp David, stood alone outside the South Portico to meet them.



No Memorial Day weekend in the capital is complete without the ritualistic rumble of Rolling Thunder. For 20 years, the nonprofit group has led a "Ride for Freedom" along the National Mall, a full-throttle demonstration in support of soldiers held captive or missing in action.

Thousands of participants descend on Washington for the weekend-long event.

"How you doing, Artie? Welcome back," Bush said to Artie Muller, the founder and executive director of the group.

Muller led 13 visitors on eight motorcycles. The guests included Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, Transportation Secretary Mary Peters and White House chief of staff Josh Bolten, whose Harley-Davidson was decked out with patriotic bunting.

Bush shook hands and hugged visitors, looked at the gleaming bikes and then invited his visitors into the Oval Office.



Rolling Thunder seeks a full accounting of veterans who are prisoners of war or are missing in action. It also advocates for fair treatment of veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and has been critical of Bush's Veteran Affairs Department on that front.

Afterward, Muller said he presented a series of concerns to Bush.

Among them were the way the Defense Department classifies missing and captured troops and the plight of soldiers who have been discharged from military hospitals and are having trouble supporting their families.

"He's always been very honest with us and supportive," Muller said. "He feels that these issues need to be addressed."

Bush held a similar greeting at the White House in 2004 for Rolling Thunder. The group endorsed him in both his presidential bids.



Overall, tens of thousands of motorcyclists took part in Sunday's rally; major streets were closed for the event. The riders began at the Pentagon, crossed the Memorial Bridge and gathered at the somber wall of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

On Monday, Bush planned to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in honor of Memorial Day.

WASHINGTON — The House approved a bill that would fund the war in Iraq through September without a timetable to withdraw U.S. troops — despite some Democratic lawmakers' efforts.

House members voted 280-142 to send the $120 billion bill to the Senate for final passage, expected later Thursday night. Congress will likely send the bill to President Bush this weekend.

Bush vowed support for a bill despite opposition from some Democrats and Republicans who are unhappy with the bill. Some Democratic critics want a timetable for withdrawing troops while some Republicans don't support about $10 billion of extra spending.



The bill also would fund more bomb resistant humvees and aid for farmers and victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Bush refined his definition of the enemy in Iraq in a commencement address at the Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday.

"Al Qaeda is public enemy number one for Iraq's young democracy, and Al Qaeda is public enemy number one for America, as well," Bush said. "And that is why we must support our troops, we must support the Iraqi government, and we must defeat Al Qaeda in Iraq."

The president declassified intelligence he said showed Usama bin Laden had urged Al Qaeda's leader in Iraq to attack American targets outside Iraq. Bush said if troops leave Iraq too soon, the terrorists will follow them home.

Some Democrats don't agree.

"You saw what would be done in the region and they may very well be deciding against the United States," said Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del. "If that's true, Mr. President, get out of the civil war. Get in the business of dealing with Al Qaeda."

Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., stands behind Bush's position to remain in Iraq until the job is done.

"This is going to be a long process," Hoekstra told FOX News. "We're going to get some good news, we're going to get some bad news. What we need to do is stay consistent on putting the pressure on Al Qaeda, Iraq, Afghanistan and other parts of the world."

Democrats failed to force Bush to set a timetable for withdrawing U.S. forces when the president vetoed a bill that required bringing troops home. Democrats couldn't get enough votes to reach the two-thirds majority needed to override Bush's veto.

Democrats coupled their concession to the president with pledges to challenge his policies anew. "This debate will go on," vowed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, announcing plans to hold votes by fall on four separate measures seeking a change in course.

Two front-runners, Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois, declined to say how they intended to vote on the measure.

Both have voted against binding timetables for troop withdrawals in the past, before public sentiment against the war hardened or they became presidential contenders. Last week, the two voted to advance legislation that would have cut off money for U.S. combat operations by March 31, 2008, cutoff.

Democratic challengers Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut and Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio said they would oppose the measure because in their view it issued a blank check to Bush on the Iraq war.

"Half-measures and equivocations are not going to change our course in Iraq," Dodd said in a statement. "If we are serious about ending the war, Congress must stand up to this president's failed policy now — with clarity and conviction."

The hefty spending bill has become a lightning rod for political attacks on Bush and his handling of the deeply unpopular war, which has killed more than 3,400 U.S. troops and cost more than $300 billion. But it also has exposed a sharp divide among Democrats on how far Congress should go to end the war.

Democratic candidates are vying for the anti-war vote, but at the same time do not want to appear as though they are turning their backs on the military.

The bill includes about $100 billion for military and diplomatic efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as $8 billion in domestic projects such as farm aid and hurricane relief and $9 billion in military-related spending such as improved health care for service members.

While the measure does not include a timetable on the war, it does threaten to withhold U.S. aid dollars for Iraq if Baghdad fails to make progress on political and security reforms. The president, however, could waive that restriction.

Biden said that while he would vote for the measure, he disagreed with the approach because it could hamper the Iraqi government's ability to take on more responsibility.

The legislation resulted after weeks of negotiations with the White House, which agreed to accept $17 billion in funding not requested by Bush as long as there were not restrictions on the military campaign.

Democratic leaders planned multiple votes in the House on Thursday to ensure the measure would ultimately pass because of disagreements among members on elements of the bill. One vote was to be on war funding, while another would be to approve the extra money for domestic and military-related projects.

While liberal Democrats were expected to vote against the war funds measure, GOP members were expected to make up for the losses. On the added spending, Democrats likely were to be unified in their support for the measure, overcoming GOP objections.

Navy Stages Show of Force Off Iran Coast

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - The U.S. Navy staged its latest show of military force off the Iranian coastline on Wednesday, sending two aircraft carriers and landing ships packed with 17,000 U.S. Marines and sailors to carry out unannounced exercises in the Persian Gulf.



The carrier strike groups led by the USS John C. Stennis and USS Nimitz were joined by the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard and its own strike group, which includes landing ships carrying members of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.



The Navy said nine U.S. warships passed through the narrow Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday. Merchant ships passing through the busy strait carry two-fifths of the world's oil exports.



Aircraft aboard the three carriers and the Bonhomme Richard were to conduct air training while the ships ran submarine, mine and other exercises.

The maneuvers came just two months after a previous exercise in March when two U.S. carrier groups carried out two days of air and sea maneuvers off the Iranian coast.



Before the arrival of the Bonhomme Richard strike group, the Navy maintained around 20,000 U.S personnel at sea in the Gulf and neighboring waters.



U.S. warships have frequently collided with merchant ships in the busy shipping lanes of the Gulf.

There's Good News from Iraq

Wednesday, Some 30 tribes in Al Anbar formed an alliance, the "Anbar Awakening," in September and pledged to fight Al Qaeda militants in the insurgency-plagued province by forming their own paramilitary units and sending recruits to the local police force.

There is good news from Iraq, believe it or not. It comes from the most unlikely place: Anbar province, home of the Sunni insurgency. The level of violence has plummeted in recent weeks. An alliance of U.S. troops and local tribes has been very effective in moving against the al-Qaeda foreign fighters. A senior U.S. military official told me—confirming reports from several other sources—that there have been "a couple of days recently during which there were zero effective attacks and less than 10 attacks overall in the province (keep in mind that an attack can be as little as one round fired).

This is a result of sheiks stepping up and opposing AQI [al-Qaeda in Iraq] and volunteering their young men to serve in the police and army units there." The success in Anbar has led sheiks in at least two other Sunni-dominated provinces, Nineveh and Salahaddin, to ask for similar alliances against the foreign fighters. And, as TIME's Bobby Ghosh has reported, an influential leader of the Sunni insurgency, Harith al-Dari, has turned against al-Qaeda as well. It is possible that al-Qaeda is being rejected like a mismatched liver transplant by the body of the Iraqi insurgency.



The good news comes with caveats, of course. The removal of AQI's havens in Anbar may ultimately hurt the terrorists' ability to blow up markets in Baghdad, but it hasn't yet. As I reported in September 2005, there is also the scandalous reality that an alliance with the tribes was proposed by U.S. Army intelligence officers as early as October 2003 and rejected by L. Paul Bremer's Coalition Provisional Authority on the grounds that "tribes are part of the past.

They have no place in the new democratic Iraq." The damage caused by that myopic stupidity may never be repaired: it gave al-Qaeda a base in the Sunni tribal areas, which enabled the sustained, spectacular anti-Shi'ite bombing campaign, which, along with the Sunnis' historic disdain for the Shi'ite majority, created the conditions for the current civil war. "Just because the Sunni tribesmen have joined with us in Anbar doesn't mean they like the Baghdad government," a senior Administration official told me. "They just hate al-Qaeda more."

Which is why there is some very bad news from Iraq as well. There is a growing sense among senior U.S. military and intelligence officials that the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki—and the Shi'ite factions in general—has little interest in making concessions to the Sunnis. "The Shi'ites suffer from a battered-child syndrome. They simply don't trust the Sunnis," said a senior U.S. official. There was a long history, even before Saddam Hussein's massacres, of Sunni prejudice and pogroms against the Shi'ites.

In recent months, the al-Maliki government has sent several clear signals of anti-Sunni intransigence. It has supported the "voluntary" relocation of Sunni Arabs from the disputed, Kurdish-dominated city of Kirkuk. And in an instance that is particularly vexing to U.S. intelligence officials, al-Maliki has supported the creation of a parallel Shi'ite-dominated intelligence service to supplant the authority of the Iraq Intelligence Service, which has been run by a Sunni general named Mahmoud Shahwani, who is considered "very effective" by U.S. officials. It is beginning to seem quite implausible that the various Iraqi political factions will meet "benchmarks" like rescinding the punitive de-Baathification programs and passing a law guaranteeing fair distribution of oil profits anytime soon.

And as General David Petraeus keeps reminding us, a political solution is necessary: a military victory is not possible. So let's try to put the good and bad news together. It's not impossible that the Iraqis will eventually remove the al-Qaeda cancer from the Sunni insurgency—which would put a serious crimp in President George W. Bush's current rationale for the war, that we're there to fight al-Qaeda. But it's also probable that without a political deal, the sectarian conflict between the Sunnis and Shi'ites will intensify—and eventually explode when the U.S. military pulls back from Iraq. The stakes in Iraq then become questions of moral responsibility and regional stability.

"How many Srebrenicas do you have the stomach for?" a senior U.S. official asked me, referring to the Bosnian massacre by the Serbs in 1995. Given the antipathy of the American people for the war, I'd guess the public reaction would be, "Those Arabs are just a bunch of barbarians, and we could never tell the difference between Shi'ites and Sunnis anyway." A more pointed question is, How many massacres of Sunnis will the Saudis and Jordanians have the stomach for? How hard will Iran press its obvious advantage with a Shi'ite-dominated government in Iraq? The answers to those questions are completely out of American hands. They rest with the Iraqi Shi'ites. Eventually even battered children have to grow up.

WASHINGTON — President Bush, trying to defend his war strategy, declassified intelligence Tuesday asserting that Usama bin Laden ordered a top lieutenant in early 2005 to form a terrorist cell that would conduct attacks outside Iraq — and that the United States should be the top target.



Frances Fragos Townsend, the White House homeland security adviser, said the intelligence bolsters the Bush administration's contention that Al Qaeda wants to use Iraq as a staging area to launch terrorist attacks around the world, including the United States.

In January 2005, bin Laden tasked Al Qaeda operative Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who was in Iraq, to organize the cell, Townsend said. Al-Zarqawi, the former leader of Al Qaeda's Iraq operations, was killed there in June 2006 by a U.S. airstrike.

"We know from the intelligence community that al-Zarqawi welcomed the tasking and claimed he already had some good proposals," Townsend said.

WASHINGTON - House Republicans angled Tuesday to put Democrats in a no-win position: reprimand a senior colleagues or be seen as blindly excusing legislative bullying for partisan reasons.
House leaders tentatively scheduled a late Tuesday vote on a Republican move to reprimand Rep. John Murtha, a Pennsylvania Democrat and close ally of House Speaker Hancy Pelosi, D-Calif. The GOP accuses Murtha of making a blatant threat against a Republican who challenged a pet project that Murtha wanted.

Democratic leaders said they believed they had the votes to kill the motion, but conceded that some party members were unhappy about being pressed to defend a blustery colleague known for bare-knuckled politics.



Murtha has not disputed a Republican claim that he stormed across the House floor May 17 to confront Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich. Rogers had tried unsuccessfully to strike a $23 million Murtha earmark—or narrowly targeted spending item—for a drug intelligence center in Murtha's district.

In a House speech Monday, Rogers said Murtha threatened him by saying, "you will not get any earmarks now and forever."

Rogers, backed by House GOP leaders, said Murtha's threat violates congressional ethics rules and "merits the reprimand of the House."

WASHINGTON - House Democrats rejected a Republican bid Tuesday to reprimand Rep. John Murtha, a senior lawmaker accused of threatening legislative reprisals against a GOP member who had crossed him.

Before and after the largely party-line vote, which caused some Democrats discomfort, Republicans taunted Democratic leaders about their campaign promises to run a more ethical and open Congress.

The House voted 219-189 to kill the Republicans' motion to reprimand Murtha, a Pennsylvania Democrat, Iraq war foe and close ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Two Democrats - Earl Blumenauer of Oregon and Jim Cooper of Tennessee - voted against killing the motion. One Republican - Tim Murphy of Pennsylvania - voted for the motion to table, or kill, the proposed reprimand.

Murtha, known for his bluff manner and fondness of pork barrel projects, did not dispute claims that he charged across the House floor May 17 to confront Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich. Still, several Democrats said some party members found it distasteful to vote to protect Murtha.

When Democrats took control of the House and Senate in January, they vowed to reform the practice of placing earmarks in spending bills. Members seeking earmarks would have to identify themselves and their intentions in time for staffers to review the items, leaders said.

TRIPOLI, Lebanon — Lebanese troops pounded a Palestinian refugee camp with artillery and tank fire for a second day Monday, raising huge columns of smoke as they battled a militant group suspected of ties to Al Qaeda in the worst violence since the end of the 1975-90 civil war.

Nearly 50 combatants were killed in the first day of fighting Sunday, but it was not known how many civilians have been killed inside the Nahr el-Bared camp on the outskirts of the northern port city of Tripoli.



Palestinian officials in the camp reported at least nine civilians were killed Monday, along with 40 wounded. The figures could not be confirmed because emergency workers or security officials have not been able to get in.

The White House said it supports Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora's efforts to deal with fighting, and the State Department defended the Lebanese army, saying it was working in a "legitimate manner" against "provocations by violent extremists" operating in the camp.



Black smoke filled the sky over Nahr el-Bared as fires raged for hours and heavy gunfire and explosions rang out constantly. Shells could be seen thudding into buildings in the seaside camp.

Jimmy Carter was a joke as a president. There are so many painful memories of this befuddled plains, Georgia politician that his current stupidity seems trivial. And then he'd act holier than thou to other non-dictatorships such as Taiwan.

His main mission was to appease every dictator he could kiss. He even gave hundreds of millions of Your Taxpayer dollars to North Korea on the promise that they wouldn't build atomic weapons and missiles to deliver them. How nice. The ink on the paper wasn't even dry before they violated that. Jimmy also ignored the deliberate starvation of millions of Koreans by the same dictator he'd brown nosed shortly before. Oh yes: he ignored the deliberate starvation in the Soviet Union, Rhodesia, Uganda, Ethiopia and several other world dictatorships, not to mention that the Koreans that he loves, were deliberately starving literally millions of "his friends", the innocent and disarmed common Korean peasant.

Such things as his choice of secretary of state, Andrew Young, who when he went to South Africa declared, "the United States keeps political prisoners in its jails" enhanced his bizarre administration's reputation.

Jimmy was responsible for the fall of the Shah of Iran to the Ayatoilet Cockamamie and the establishment of that insane Moslem dictatorship. He thought he solved it when he cut off the U.S. from their oil. He left it to become the terrorist capital without so much as a whimper. Alexander Haig said Jimmy Carter did more to aid the cause of radical fundamentalist Islam than any other president, first by not helping the Shah of Iran when Khomeni deposed him; second by doing NOTHING during the hostage crisis.

Of course, Jimmy wouldn't want you to remember that he caused the skyrocketing price of gas. Remember gas lines blocks long while Jimmy was president. Another stupid, ignorant decision by Jimmy was to stop research and implementation of the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. The entire rest of the world does this and has been doing it safely for 30 years. But ol' Jimmy, who LIED ABOUT BEING A COMMANDER OF A NUCLEAR SUBMARINE, who in fact only spent a few months on a TRAINING mission, bowed to the enviro-nazis of his time. The result, 30,000 TONS OF UNUSED SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL. This ASSININE DECISION by Jimmy "The Dummest of all the presidents," haunts us to this day. Now we have to consider the reprocessing of all of that or burying it for tens of thousands of years. It would have never been a problem if it was reprocessed into new fuel and been burned until the radiation was negligable.

And remember when the just inaugurated new president Ronald Reagan signed the deregulation of the price of oil as his very first act? And Jimmy and the DEMONCRAPS predicted the fall of the US. But guess what? The price of oil and gasoline dropped lower than ever and the dollar became the strongest in its' history.

Jimmy invented "apartheid" and used it to whip the DEMOCRATIC LEFT WING COMMUNIST LOVERS into a frenzy against South Africa. He personally waged international financial war against South Africa and helped establish a regime with Nelson Mandela, a socialist who was a buddy of Libya's terrorist head of state, Muhmmar Quadafi, that has destroyed the economy there. South Africa now is the rape and murder capitol of the world thanks to Jimmy. Jimmy's use of trumped up charges and "apharteid" destroyed the jobs of the Africans he thought needed "Liberation". And then when the USSR invaded Afghanistan in 1979, Jimmuh replied, "He lied to me." What an ass! Jimmy then forced young Olympian atheletes to forget all their years of training in support of his political policy because the Olympics were to be held in the Soviet Union. Many of these young atheletes instead got around the boycott by competing on the teams of other countries. Jimmy knew about the Soviet's intentions but chose instead to do nothing about it. Gutless as usual.

On the other hand, Jimmy's complete lack of manners let him kiss the Queen Mother of England, Queen Elizabeth, on the lips when he met her. She was embarrassed by this and angered as well. As he mentioned in his Playboy interview, "I've lusted in my heart for other women." Yeah right, Jimmy really classy move.

And don't forget that Jimmy pardoned all the draft dodgers from the Viet Nam conflict and restored them to full US citizenship.

The Immigration Bill: Comprehensive or Incomprehensible?

Most Americans know that we have an illegal immigration problem in this country, with perhaps as many as 20 million people residing here unlawfully. And I think most Americans have a pretty good idea about how to at least start solving the problem - secure our nation’s borders.

But there's an old saying in Washington that, in dealing with any tough issue, half the politicians hope that citizens don't understand it while the other half fear that people actually do. This kind of thinking was apparent with the "comprehensive" immigration reform bill that the U.S. Senate and the White House negotiated yesterday.



I'd tell you what was in the legislation, but 24 hours after the politicians agreed the bill looked good, the Senate lawyers were still writing what may turn out to be a one thousand page document. In fact, a final version of the bill most likely will not be made available to the public until after the legislation is passed. That may come five days from now. That's like trying to digest an eight-course meal on a fifteen-minute lunch break.

We've tried the "comprehensive" route before to solve the illegal immigration problem with a bit more care and deliberation, and the results haven’t been good. Back in May 1985, Congress promised us that it would come up with a comprehensive plan to solve the problem of illegal immigration and our porous borders. Eighteen months later, in November 1986, that comprehensive plan was signed into law.

Twenty-two years and millions of illegal immigrants later, that comprehensive plan hasn’t done what most Americans wanted it to do -- secure America's borders. Now Washington says the new "comprehensive" plan will solve the problem that the last comprehensive plan didn’t.

The fact is our border and immigration systems are still badly broken. We were reminded of this when Newsweek reported that the family of three of the men, arrested last week for allegedly plotting to kill American military personnel at Fort Dix, New Jersey, entered the U.S. illegally more than 20 years ago; filed for asylum back in 1989, but fell off the government’s radar screen when federal bureaucrats essentially lost track of the paperwork. Wonder how many times that's been replicated?

Is it any wonder that a lot of folks today feel like they're being sold a phony bill of goods on border security? A "comprehensive" plan doesn’t mean much if the government can't accomplish one of its most basic responsibilities for its citizens -- securing its borders. A nation without secure borders will not long be a sovereign nation.

No matter how much lipstick Washington tries to slap onto this legislative pig, it's not going to win any beauty contests. In fact, given Congress's track record, the bill will probably get a lot uglier -- at least from the public's point of view. And agreeing to policies before actually seeing what the policies are is a heck of a way to do business.

We should scrap this "comprehensive" immigration bill and the whole debate until the government can show the American people that we have secured the borders -- or at least made great headway. That would give proponents of the bill a chance to explain why putting illegals in a more favorable position than those who play by the rules is not really amnesty.

Dems bend rules, break pledge

Democrats are wielding a heavy hand on the House Rules Committee, committing many of the procedural sins for which they condemned Republicans during their 12 years in power.

So far this year, Democrats have frequently prevented Republicans from offering amendments, limited debate in the committee and, just last week, maneuvered around chamber rules to protect a $23 million project for Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.).



On Wednesday, Democrats suggested changing the House rules to limit the minority's right to offer motions to recommit bills back to committee -- violating a protection that has been in place since 1822.

Much of this heavy-handedness is standard procedure in the House, where the majority has every right to dominate, but it contradicts the many campaign promises Democratic leaders made last year to run a cleaner, more open Congress.



Just last December, House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) declared that Democrats "intend to have a Rules Committee ... that gives opposition voices and alternative proposals the ability to be heard and considered on the floor of the House."

Democrats have made a number of small revisions -- such as meeting earlier in the day -- but their overall record in the new Congress has fallen well short of that goal.



"The Democrats have not made good on a single promise they made during 2006, especially when it comes to fostering a more open and deliberative House of Representatives," Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) said. "Instead of making the House more open and deliberative, they've gone in the opposite direction, doing things we never even contemplated during our time in the majority."

Michigan GOP leader wants Paul barred from future debates


COLUMBIA, S.C.— The chairman of the Michigan Republican Party said Wednesday that he will try to bar Ron Paul from future GOP presidential debates because of remarks the Texas congressman made that suggested the Sept. 11 attacks were the fault of U.S. foreign policy.

Michigan party chairman Saul Anuzis said he will circulate a petition among Republican National Committee members to ban Paul from more debates. At a GOP candidates' debate Tuesday night, Paul drew attacks from all sides, most forcefully from former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, when he linked the terror attacks to U.S. bombings.



"Have you ever read about the reasons they attacked us? They attack us because we've been over there. We've been bombing Iraq for 10 years," Paul said.

Anuzis called the comments "off the wall and out of whack."

"I think he would have felt much more comfortable on the stage with the Democrats in what he said last night. And I think that he is a distraction in the Republican primary and he does not represent the base and he does not represent the party," Anuzis said during an RNC state leadership meeting.

"Given what he said last night it was just so off the wall and out of whack that I think it was more detrimental than helpful."

Anuzis said his petition would go to debate sponsors and broadcasters to discourage inviting Paul.

Jesse Benton, Paul's campaign spokesman, said the candidate "is supporting the traditional GOP foreign policy. I think it's a shame when people try to silence the traditional conservative Republican standpoint."

After the debate Tuesday, Paul said he didn't' expect his remarks to end his campaign.

"The last time I got a message out about my position on the war it boosted us up by tens of thousands and I didn't change my position," Paul said. "I think the American people are sick and tired of this war and want it ended."

Thompson Likely Gone From `Law & Order'

NEW YORK - NBC's top entertainment executive said Monday that he doesn't expect actor and potential Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson back on "Law & Order" next season.
NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly claimed no insider knowledge of Thompson's political plans, but his statement indicated the seriousness of Thompson's presidential musings. The former Tennessee senator has been making speaking appearances and blogging on issues in recent weeks as he considers a candidacy.



"It's pretty clear that Fred is going to be leaving the cast of the show no matter what," Reilly said at a news conference on NBC's fall schedule.

He later left the door slightly ajar by saying it was "highly unlikely" Thompson would be back. Thompson certainly wouldn't return to prime-time network television if he chooses to run, he said.

Thompson plays the district attorney Arthur Branch on NBC's ripped- from-the-headlines New York-set criminal-justice show. NBC has picked up the series for its 18th season, but new episodes won't appear until next January after NBC's Sunday-night football series ends.

A Thompson spokesman did not immediately return a call for comment on Monday.

Even if Thompson were to decide against a candidacy and wanted to stay on "Law & Order," the timing may be tough. Many television series, including "Law & Order," will be going into production earlier than usual in coming months to stockpile episodes in the event of a strike by writers later this fall, Reilly said.

Where The Hell Is Al Sharpton?

Bad-boy radio hosts Opie and Anthony yesterday topped even their infamous 2002 "Sex in St. Pat's" stunt, serving up a homeless man's profane declaration that he'd like to rape Condoleezza Rice, Laura Bush and Queen Elizabeth.

The graphic sequence on their XM Satellite Radio program showed that even in a medium with no restrictions on content, Opie and Anthony found a way to cross the line.



The actual comments were made by a guest the shock jocks call Homeless Charlie. As each woman's name came up, he said, "I'd love to f--- that b----."

They laughed as they imagined "the horror" in Rice's face and what it would be like to hold her down and punch her in the face.

The crude cracks came a month after CBS gave Don Imus the boot for calling members of the Rutgers University women's basketball team "nappy-headed ho's."

As an audio clip spread across the Internet, XM quickly issued a condemnation. "We deplore the comments made on today's 'Opie & Anthony Show,'" said an XM spokesman.

Opie and Anthony themselves offered an apology yesterday evening:

"We take very seriously the responsibility that comes with our creative freedom and regret any offense that this segment has caused."

At the State Department, spokesman Sean McCormack shook his head in disgust but declined to comment on the insult to the secretary of state. A White House spokesman declined to "dignify that with a response."

CBS Radio, where Opie and Anthony are heard earlier each morning over WFNY (92.3 FM) on a different show with much stricter content guidelines, breathed an almost audible sigh of relief.

"Fortunately, we have standards that did not, and would not, ever let something like this make our air," it said.

XM said nothing yesterday about disciplinary action, but industry observers said the offensive remarks had the potential to derail a lot more than the deejays' jobs.

XM and Sirius Satellite are seeking the Federal Communications Commission's approval for a merger. Tom Taylor, editor of the trade magazine Inside Radio, noted this could place the issue of content on the table.

"XM and Sirius don't want any regulation," he said. "But it's come up in four congressional hearings - and at this point, the merger is such a close call any issue could become important."

Opie and Anthony had "Homeless Charlie" on their WFNY show earlier yesterday. While many of his comments were bleeped out, he talked about how he "punches old b----es in the head" to steal their money.

Anthony, whose full name is Anthony Cumia, called that comment "horrible and awful," but said it illustrated a point about radio today. "You can talk about beating up old ladies and nobody stops you, but make one insulting joke about an ethnic group and you're fired."

Opie (aka Gregg Hughes) and Anthony have complained lately about restrictions on their terrestrial radio content, a subject with which they are familiar.

They were taken off New York's WNEW by CBS in August 2002 for running a contest in which they said two listeners had sex in St. Patrick's Cathedral.

They were hired by XM in 2004 and in 2006 rehired by CBS for WFNY.

Michael Harrison, editor of the trade magazine Talkers, said they could now face the same pressure Imus came under, even though their bit aired on satellite.

"In both cases," said Harrison, "FCC regulations don't matter, because they weren't violated. Those involved are still subject to public reaction - a reaction that now is amplified by the Internet."

Feds Probe Michael Moore

Gee it's been a while since we heard anything out of the delusional idiot Michael Moore and his conspiracy theory ass. Well boy has he blown it this time. Evidently he took some ailing 9-11 resue workers to CUBA!! We arent suppose to go to Cuba are we without permission from the government? NO I didnt think so.

LOS ANGELES - Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore is under investigation by the U.S. Treasury Department for taking ailing Sept. 11 rescue workers to Cuba for a segment in his upcoming health-care documentary "Sicko".

The investigation provides another contentious lead-in for a provocative film by Moore, a fierce critic of President Bush. In the past, Moore's adversaries have fanned publicity that helped the filmmaker create a new brand of opinionated blockbuster documentary.

"Sicko" promises to take the health-care industry to task the way Moore confronted America's passion for guns in "Bowling for Columbine" and skewered Bush over his handling of Sept. 11 in "Fahrenheit 9/11."



The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control notified Moore in a letter dated May 2 that it was conducting a civil investigation for possible violations of the U.S. trade embargo restricting travel to Cuba.

"This office has no record that a specific license was issued authorizing you to engage in travel-related transactions involving Cuba," Dale Thompson, OFAC chief of general investigations and field operations, wrote in the letter to Moore.

In March, Moore took about 10 ailing workers from the Ground Zero rescue effort in Manhattan for treatment in Cuba, said a person working with the filmmaker on the release of "Sicko." The person requested anonymity because Moore's attorneys had not yet determined how to respond.

Moore, who scolded Bush over the Iraq war during the 2003 Oscar telecast, received the letter Monday, the person said. "Sicko" premieres May 19 at the Cannes Film Festival and debuts in U.S. theaters June 29.

Moore declined to comment, said spokeswoman Lisa Cohen.

The House last night pushed through its second plan to fund the Iraq war and reshape war policy, approving legislation that would provide partial funding for the conflict but hold back most of the money until President Bush reports on the war's progress in July.

Circuit City Hero

Recently we have learned that an alert Circuit City employee helped foil a plot aimed at our Troops stationed at Ft. Dix. It also make's one wonder what part "The Patriot Act" played in all this, and remember the Democrats either want it done away with entirely or modified to where we cant monitor any of this crap.

Personally I think the Circuit City employee deserves a Medal for saving our Troops

A male employee who works at Circuit City behind the Moorestown
Mall is the unsung hero that first enabled authorities to foil the
Fort Dix terror plot.

Circuit City corporate spokesman Jim Babb confirmed this morning
that a current employee was asked by one of the alleged terrorists
to dub a Jihadist training VHS cassette into a DVD.

The clerk alerted Mount Laurel police about the video in January
2006, who then contacted the FBI, which launched the investigation.

"Out of respect for our store associates and also to avoid
interfering with the investigation, we're not doing interviews,"
Babb said. "This is in the midst of the early stages of an
investigation and we don't want to do anything to interfere with
that.

Babb declined to give the clerk's name.

At the office for Rep. Jim Saxton, R-Mount Holly, spokesman Jeff
Sagnip Hollendonner said the congressman had not spoken to the
clerk but that the office was considering sending a thank you note.

"He is obviously someone who is alert and acted in a very
responsible way and he very likely saved lives, there's no question
about that," Sagnip Hollendonner said. "So he's a hero because of
that."
