Here Comes The Fence!!
Work on Texas border wall to begin soon: Chertoff
Construction on a border wall in southern Texas is expected to begin by this autumn, despite strong local opposition, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said in an interview published on Thursday.
Chertoff told the Houston Chronicle the federal government "can't rule out" using powers of eminent domain to seize land for the wall that is intended to stem the flow of illegal immigrants entering the United States from Mexico.
In heavily Hispanic southern Texas, where cultural and economic ties to Mexico run deep, local officials, business groups and environmentalists have spoken out against the wall as unnecessary and unwanted.
But Chertoff said national security was at stake, so the project will move ahead shortly.
"I expect we'll be doing some construction in Texas this fiscal year," he said, referring to the government fiscal year ending September 30.
Local officials said recently they had been told the Homeland Security department plans to have 153 miles of wall in place in Texas by the end of 2008.
While locals may be consulted on the type of fence constructed, they will not have veto power over whether the wall will be built, Chertoff said.
"Because the fence is not only to protect the border communities, it's to protect the country," he said.
Construction on the wall already has begun in Arizona, Chertoff said. Washington aims to have "operational control" of the border by 2013 by building the 700-mile (1,120-km) wall along parts of the frontier and creating a "virtual fence" in desert areas with drones, sensors, cameras, satellite technology and vehicle barriers.

Hey! It's a start! I wonder how much coverage this will get on the evening news.

Personally, I wonder how much of it will actually be completed.
This looks to me like Bush attempting to erase our memory of, or at least in some way assuage our sense of betrayal by, his tenacity at fighting for the amnesty (excuse me, "immigration reform") bill, even though we now know he hangs with the liberals on the criminal immigration issue.
Further, there is no mention in Chertoff's statements that indicates that the administration has gained Congressional approval for the wall.
When the time comes to fund it, will they vote to do so, or will the Democrat majority play the usual anti-Bush politics and oppose it for opposition's sake, like they are the President's Surgeon General nominee?
Evil Rracist Neo-Con Nazi's. (Just saving the leftards the time and trouble.)
wonder what kind of "hunch" bag-o-bones chertoff had this time?!?
is it my imagination, or is our conservative side now paying lip service to anybody who will listen?
Of course they're going to build the fence. I mean, they're the government. The wouldn't lie to us, would they?
Seth,
I thought President Bush already authorized the Drones, The Fence/Wall, and the National Guard?
Maybe President Bush got the message when we all spoke loudly with one voice, WE WANT THE FRIGGEN FENCE!!
Jenn,
LOL, Thank's I'm sure you saved alot of them the trouble.
Nanc,
It seems Chertoff is getting extremely worried about this 'Hunch', I think we should probably listen to him. The chatter does seem to be quite high, and all signs seem to point to the same chatter there was before 9-11. Unfortunately we can never thwart all attacks, but if Chertoff is getting serious about all this, I am too.
Uncle P,
Well I dont know, you remember they are the ones who attacked our Country on 9-11, so there is no telling.
Oh, So True.....Great post Marie
I think that President Bush and Chertoff DID get the message. Perhaps they were hoping that the legislation authorizing the fence and funding it's construction (isn't that two separate bits of legislation?) would be altered or deleted.
But it's clear now that the defeat of the immigration bill, largely with the message "BORDER SECURITY FIRST" got through.
I don't know how I missed this post! This is of the utmost importance to me and I pray to God that it is true. Thanks, Marie.
