VP Cheney Rushed To Bomb Shelter In Afghanistan

Cheney takes refuge in bomb shelter after Afghan blast

MUSCAT (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney was whisked into a bomb shelter immediately after a Taliban suicide bomber struck the main American military base he was visiting in Afghanistan on Tuesday.

Up to 14 people were killed, including one U.S. and one South Korean soldier, in the Bagram air base attack which rebels said was aimed at Cheney.

He had been in his room at the base where he had unexpectedly had to stay the night after bad weather forced postponement of his trip to the capital, Kabul, about 60 km (40 miles) away.

"At 10 a.m. I heard a loud boom," Cheney said.

Base authorities sounded a red alert and secret service officials told Cheney there had been a suspected suicide attack.

"They moved me for a relatively brief period of time to one of the bomb shelters nearby," he said. "As the situation settled down and they got a better sense in terms of what was going on, then I went back to my room until it was time to leave."

NATO's death toll in the attack was four, officials said. A Reuters photographer at the scene saw an additional 10 bodies, putting the total at 14.

It's a shock to me when we almost lose one of our leaders, and we almost did today no matter if you like him or not he is OUR Vice President, and then you look over at HuffPo or the other Looney left site's to check out what you know they are already going to say, "Better Luck Next Time" was the theme of the day over there. Dont ask me why I was lurking but I just had to slap myself in the face with the reality that the Democrats are a complete waste of space, oxygen and time. Yeah, Yeah, I already knew that so dont say "Marie You knew what you would see over there", I KNOW! I just have to be slapped with reality once in a while. It just takes a good dose of hate and vitriol to remind me why I am a Republican and will NEVER EVER sink as low as those imbiciles. This proves the War on Terror goes on, and more Countries need to be involved. DEMOCRATS! I cant stand you when you act like this!! I know tonight I am going to be saying a prayer that MY Vice President wasnt killed today!

On a different note: My e-mail site is down so I had to answer your question in the comments about your flag. When I was forced to change I lost several things that I cannot get working again. I can no longer access You Tube for posting for example even though I have changed all of my settings at YT to coincide with the Google account. I also cannot place the GOP news service htmle in the template because it won't take as well as some of the buttons that I had before. This new beta thing is a pin in the butt in some cases. And while you may not agree with someone protesting, that's something we should embrace as Americans. It's totally American to protest things if you don't agree with something. The Founding Fathers were protestors.

Really! Then you dont understand the Democrat party of today. This is NOT the Party of Roosevelt anymore.

You talk of Defending the Constitution when the Liberals are throwing it in the trash by trying to re-write what Constitutional authority our ForeFathers gave our President to protect this Country!

How about Defending this Country from ALL Enemies Foreign AND Domestic? Our President took that oath and has lived it every single day he has been in office.

The Democrats are trying to make damn good and sure that we are left defenseless against the enemies of this Country that want us all dead! Do you understand that? THEY WANT US ALL DEAD!!

They want to take away our right to listen in on calls from Al-Queada to anyone in this Country and Vise Versa! They want to take away our right to freeze monies that go to terrorist organizations and groups. They want to shut down GITMO (Where are we suppose to hold these prisoners Ted Kennedy's backyard?) They want to take ALL the Troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan knowing full well they will follow us back home. They want to defund our Troops and leave them helpless on the battlefield when the majority of the Troops want to finish the mission and come home with the honor and respect they deserve. They do NOT support the Troops or this Country by marching on Washington spray painting the Capitol, and threatening to Deface our National Memorials. They do NOT support the Troops or this Country by spitting on them at supposedly "Peaceful" protests. Basically they are against everything! All this while we are at WAR! All this while we have an ALL Volunteer Military and NO Draft! And ALL this after we have seen what Terrorists are capable of doing on 9-11. And several other instances way before 9-11.

If there was a Democrat candidate out there with some balls to take on and defeat the Terrorists that would be a + in my book. But I just dont see any.

But all I see is Bashing our President during a time of war, calling him incompetant, and tearing him down daily. All that has done has pushed me farther to the right.

We had a Democrat President for 8 years, and under his term we were attacked at home and abroad more times than I can count. He had numerous chances to get the one man who attacked us on 9-11 and he did NOTHING!!

I do NOT lay all the blame for everything at his feet, I am a fair person. But I am also a clear thinking person who sees what is going on and I am not about to be drug down with these nutjobs that will do NOTHING to defend us if they were to get back in power and I'm not talking about Congress, I'm talking about the Presidency.

I want a leader with Balls. I want a leader that doesnt wave a White Flag and surrender to our enemies. I want a leader that does not base his/her actions on opinion polls. I want a leader that will LEAD, Protect this Country NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES, and do the RIGHT thing, NOT the POPULAR thing.

You're damn right this is NOT a game. You're damn right this is "Real" Life, and OUR Lives. ALL OF OUR LIVES!!

All I see from the Democrat's right now are a bunch of whining, crying, wussies! Who do nothing but whine on the campain trail, "If I had it to do all over again I wouldnt have done it", that tells me when the waters get ruff, thier boat rocks whichever way popular opinion moves it!

If there was a Democrat candidate out there like Joe Lieberman or Zell Miller that would make me think twice about my vote. But until I see anybody resembleing those two I wont be voting Democrat. Until I see a Democrat running for President with balls they wont be getting my vote!

I'm no fan of the Democratic Party. They are no better than the current Republican Party except for maybe the war and a few other wedge issues. Both parties work for the same corporate interests.

Any Constitutional Scholar, Lawyer, or Historian will tell you that Bush has destroyed the Constitution more than ANY President in the past. Clinton was bad too, but Bush has taken it to a whole new level.

If Bush was so concerned about "protecting us from terrorists" why does he STILL leave the borders WIDE OPEN? Doesn't look too worried to me. Yet, we're supposed to give up all that the founding fathers fought for b/c of some guy in a cave? No thank you.

Bush, like Clinton, does NOT have the right to wiretap either. The Patriot Act, Military Commissions Act absolutely shred the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Fox's Judge Andrew Napolitano has written a book about it called "The Constitution In Exile". He says that not one terrorists has been convicted off of evidence obtained using the Patriot Act. They tell us it's to keep another 9/11 from happening but, again, leave those borders WIDE OPEN!

Benjamin Franklin once said: "Any society willing to trade their liberty for security deserve neither and will lose both."

If we don't have a Constitution and Bill of Rights then we don't have a country.

No, Bush is a complete joke! He's not a Conservative and he sure as hell isn't standing up for the Constitution he voluntarily SWORE to uphold. And he's spent more money than ALL previous presidents COMBINED! How is THAT conservative? It's not. And he's not!

Now, don't think I give a crap about the Democrats b/c they're scum as well. Both parties are not for "freedom". Both are Socialists! There are a very few REAL conservatives in DC today. Very few who abide by their oath to the Constitution.

The Federal government is WAY too big and evasive.

Bush, Cheney, Clinton, etc.... They're all the same. They're all liars.

Anon,

With all due respect, that's bullshit!!

Show me one shred of evidence where the President has violated the Constitution ever.

Bush sent the National Guard to the border, allocated money for a fence and sent Drones to patrol the border. What happened after that was up to Congress. And when they didnt act, they got tossed out of office. Now there is a Democraticaly controlled Congress and I still see NO fence! Hell I dont even see them discussing the border, all I see them doing is whining and moaning about Non-Binding Resolutions.

You seem to forget that our Founding Fathers fought to protect us from people like that guy hiding in a cave! I guess you also forgot that "That guy in the cave" thought up, plotted, planned and attacked us on 9-11. We arent suppose to defend ourselves from Lunatic's like that that want us all dead? How quickly you people forget this. Just because we havent been attacked in almost 6 years doesnt mean the threat isnt still imminent, it just means our intelligence has gotten better, and we can thwart attacks against this Country alot easier than we could have before 9-11. Like with wire tapping TERRORISTS!! Freezing TERRORIST monies!! Throwing these jackasses in GITMO until we find out who they are and what the hell they are doing and then send them back to thier respective countries. And yes THE PATRIOT ACT!! NONE of this violates the Constitution!! NONE!!

Bush DOES have the authority to "Wiretap", so did Clinton and so has every single President since Jimmy Carter signed into law FISA: Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act in 1978. Link provided, updated every single year!

Judge Andrew Napolitano wrote that book yes, but you are leaving out the fact that no one has been convicted of any terrorism charges because there has been no one brought before an American Court on those charges yet, with the exception of Jose Padilla! His trial is going to be stating soon then we can all see how this process is going to work! And that was the Judge's interpretation, that's what Judges do interpret, like they are alway's trying to "Interpret" what our founding fathers meant with the Constitution! Sometimes they are right, sometimes they are wrong. The Jose Padilla case will set a whole new standard for further cases to be prosecuted under these laws. I will find it quite interesting myself.

No one is giving up Liberty for Security, you can have both! Do you know anyone effected by any of these laws? I dont! Then again I dont hang out with Terrorists!

No, Bush is a complete joke! He's not a Conservative and he sure as hell isn't standing up for the Constitution he voluntarily SWORE to uphold. And he's spent more money than ALL previous presidents COMBINED! How is THAT conservative? It's not. And he's not!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bush is a joke? I am beginning to think YOU are a joke! That man has protected this Country as best he can since 9-11 and has been doing a damn fine job of it! As far as spending money IT TAKES MONEY TO FIGHT A FRIGGEN WAR!! WE ARE AT WAR HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN??????
If you consider both party's scum then why bother asking who the hell we would like to see run for President in '08? It's going to be one or the other!
Of course the Federal Gov. is to big, WE HAD TO ADD A NEW BRANCH OF GOVT. CALLED HOMELAND SECURITY BECAUSE WE WERE FRIGGEN ATTACKED!!
Bush, Cheney, Clinton, etc.... They're all the same. They're all liars.
The biggest lie of all is whoever is filling your head full of garbage!!
Show me one shred of evidence where the President has violated the Constitution ever.
You need to read Napolitano's book. He rips Bushie Boy a new one. The FBI don't even need a judge to kick in your door via the Patriot Act. That's TOTALLY unconstitutional. He's also supports the Federal Reserve which is totally unconstitutional.
You seem to forget that our Founding Fathers fought to protect us from people like that guy hiding in a cave!
- No they didn't! Have you ever read a history book? They fought a revolution b/c of oppressive government. There's no way they would support mass wire-tapping. That's nazi Germany stuff and Clinton did it as well.
Bush sent the National Guard to the border, allocated money for a fence and sent Drones to patrol the border. What happened after that was up to Congress. And when they didnt act, they got tossed out of office. Now there is a Democraticaly controlled Congress and I still see NO fence!
Which did absolutely nothing. And it took him 5 years to do that! Seems to me if you're worried about "terrorists" securing the borders would be the FIRST thing you'd do, not the last. And the minute-men are NOT George Bush fans. Of course the democrats ain't gonna do nothing about the border. Bush will even get his cute little amnesty program passed now that they're in control. Bush wants an open border. Why do you think he's pushing the North American Union without any oversight? He's not worried about terrorists too much.
And yes THE PATRIOT ACT!! NONE of this violates the Constitution!! NONE!!
Not according to Judge Napolitano and EVERY other Constitutional Scholar, Lawyer, and Historian. I guess it's you against them.
No one is giving up Liberty for Security, you can have both! Do you know anyone effected by any of these laws? I dont
If you understood what rights were you would. The Military Commissions Act is also unconstitutional and it violates Habeas Corpus. Again, every Judge, Scholar, Lawyer, and Historian knows this.
That man has protected this Country as best he can since 9-11 and has been doing a damn fine job of it! As far as spending money IT TAKES MONEY TO FIGHT A FRIGGEN WAR!! WE ARE AT WAR HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN??????
He swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. That's his primary function! Protecting people's rights. He's failing.
All of his spending isn't just b/c of the war. He's ran up the debt to astronimical heights. And people on this very blog is going to complain when the Democrats raise taxes to pay for what Bush did! Barry Goldwater (a REAL conservative) would dis-own a radical irresponsible borrower and spender like Bush. He's nowhere near being "conservative".
Of course the Federal Gov. is to big, WE HAD TO ADD A NEW BRANCH OF GOVT. CALLED HOMELAND SECURITY BECAUSE WE WERE FRIGGEN ATTACKED!!
Homeland Security is just part of it. He's also started SOCIALISTS unconstitutional programs like No Child Left Behind. That's socialism ma'am. That's not freedom. Taking from someone to give to others is socialism. Bush is a socialist.
I don't believe you're a real conservative either. Apparantly not since you parrot whatever the federal government says. Real conservatives ALWAYS question governments, they always push for smaller government, they push for states rights, they push for sovereignty. Bush is against these things and if you support them just b/c he happens to have an "R" by his name then you either can't think for yourself or you don't know enough about American History and the Constitution to know any better.
It bothers me when people trample on the principles of conservatism and still call themselves a conservative when they're not. They just SAY they're conservative.
To you HuffPo commenters over there:
Give one to the KosKiddies as well
anon,
Bush might not be conservative enough for you, but calling him a socialist really hurts your credibility. And the fact that you bring up the North American Union says it all. You are one of those fringie Michael Savage angry-as-hell all-or-nothing conservative wingnut purists who ruin political parties.
It is a complete lie to say that nothing positive has been done regarding border security.
Most of us would love better control of our borders and stem illegal immigration. But don't expect any one politician to be able to wave a magic wand and fix all the problems you are bitching about.
There's not much difference between you and 9/11 truthers.
I don't have current figures, but in 2005, here are some numbers regarding the Patriot Act:
Civil rights complaints to the Justice Department's inspector general:
7,136
Number of those deemed related to the Patriot Act:
1
"Sneak and peek" warrants, allowing searches without telling a subject:
155
Roving wiretaps:
49
Personal records seizures under Section 215 of the act:
35
Source: Justice Department inspector general
Any Constitutional Scholar, Lawyer, or Historian will tell you that Bush has destroyed the Constitution more than ANY President in the past.
I suggest you expand your reading beyond Napolitano.
At the time of the NSA leak, Hugh Hewitt (who I'm sure isn't conservative enough for you) had on his program some of the best Constitutional Law scholars in the country debate the matter, and the consensus is not unanimous, regarding whether President Bush was over-reaching his Presidential authority or not.
If anything, the FISA statute is an unconstitutional intrusion on the powers that the President has directly from Article II of the Constitution; also, surveillance of enemy communications in a time of war is perfectly reasonable and consistent with the 4th Amendment.
And how can you claim Bush has "destroyed the Constitution more than ANY President in the past"?
Read FDR's Domestic Surveillance
And this from the LA Times might be of interest to you:
January 18, 2006
Max Boot:
The wiretaps shouldn't bug us
I CAN CERTAINLY understand the uproar over President Bush's flagrant abuses of civil liberties. This is America. What right does that fascist in the White House have to imprison Michael Moore, wiretap Nancy Pelosi and blackmail Howard Dean?
Wait. You mean he hasn't done those things? All he's done is intercept communications between terrorists abroad and their contacts in the U.S. without a court order? Talk about defining impeachable offenses downward.
If you want to see real abuses of civil liberties, read Geoffrey R. Stone's 2004 book "Perilous Times: Free Speech in Wartime from the Sedition Act of 1798 to the War on Terrorism." It tells how John Adams jailed a congressman for criticizing his "continual grasp for power." How Abraham Lincoln suspended habeas corpus and had the army arrest up to 38,000 civilians suspected of undermining the Union cause. How Woodrow Wilson imprisoned Socialist Party leader Eugene Debs for opposing U.S. entry into World War I. And how Franklin D. Roosevelt consigned 120,000 Japanese Americans to detention camps.
You can also read about how presidents from FDR to Richard Nixon used the FBI to spy on, and occasionally blackmail and harass, their political opponents. The Senate's Church Committee in 1976 blew the whistle on decades of misconduct, including FBI investigations of such nefarious characters as Eleanor Roosevelt, William O. Douglas, Barry Goldwater and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
All you have to do is recite this litany of excess to realize the absurdity of the cries of impeachment coming from the loonier precincts of the left. Muttering about "slippery slopes" isn't enough to convince most people that fascism is descending. If the president's critics want that part of the nation that doesn't read the Nation to believe that he's a threat to our freedom, they'd better do more than turn up the level of vituperation. They'd better find some real victims — the Eugene Debses and Martin Luther Kings of the war on terror.
Civil libertarians thought they were in luck when a college student in Massachusetts claimed that two FBI agents had shown up to interview him after he had requested a copy of Mao Tse-tung's Little Red Book. Ted Kennedy cited this incident to warn of the Patriot Act's "chilling effect on free speech and academic freedom." Relax, Senator. Free speech is safe. The student lied.
The anti-Bush brigade hasn't had any luck in turning up actual instances of abuse, despite no end of effort. The ACLU compiled a list of supposed victims of the Patriot Act. After examining each case, however, Sen. Dianne Feinstein — no friend of the administration — said "it does not appear that these charges rose to the level of 'abuse.' "
Which isn't to say there haven't been some mistakes in the war on terror. Khaled Masri, a naturalized German citizen born in Lebanon, was snatched by U.S. agents in Macedonia and interrogated about his suspected terrorist links. When no such connection was uncovered, he was released five months later, complaining of mistreatment. Or there's Oregon lawyer Brandon Mayfield, a Muslim convert who was arrested and held for a couple of weeks because his fingerprints seemed to match those found at the Madrid bombing.
Doubtless other innocent people have been detained or had their communications intercepted. No system is perfect. But there isn't a scintilla of evidence that these were anything but well-intentioned mistakes committed by conscientious public servants intent on stopping the next terrorist atrocity.
And although the government has occasionally blundered, it has also used its enhanced post-9/11 powers to keep us safe. The National Security Agency's warrantless wiretaps, which have generated so much controversy, helped catch, among others, a naturalized American citizen named Iyman Faris who pleaded guilty to being part of an Al Qaeda plot to bring down the Brooklyn Bridge.
No wonder polls show that most people continue to support Bush's handling of the war on terrorism. As long as federal surveillance remains targeted on the country's enemies, not on the president's, the public will continue to yawn at hyperbolic criticisms of the commander in chief.
You're the one trying to smother your lips all over their ass, brown-nosing yourself. But you have no real idea what the Founding Fathers would really think.
You're certainly no rational conservative. Conservatives think about reality; not fantasy, wishful thinking. You deal in the world you actually live in; not in your private utopian reality. You vote for candidate A or candidate B; not for the candidate of your dreams who isn't on the ballot. Name me one electable leader who fits your mold of a "true" conservative? Name me a past President who you think is good enough to represent your 100% interests.
In 2000, you had the choice between Al Gore and George Bush. In 2004, John Kerry or George Bush. Do you vote for the candidate you agree with 0% of the time; or the one who you agree with 10% of the time? Grow up.
The Founding Fathers don't agree with your assessment of the state of the nation. Please...don't bitch & whine in their name.
"Just seeing you people assuming we are giving up our Liberties in order to have Security pushes me even farther to the right."
- Don't you mean "pushes you farther to the center"? You're not conservatives b/c you aren't conserving anything! Spend spend spend. I guess up is down and down is up, too. LOL
I don't like Michael Savage and I don't endorse him. I've only heard his show twice in my life.
"Name me one electable leader who fits your mold of a "true" conservative?"
There is no perfect candidate, I realize that. But the truest "conservative" running in 2008 is Ron Paul hands down.
Rosie? What's that mean and what does that have to do with anything?
We're talking about true conservatism vs. phony conservatism. We're talking about Constitutional vs. Un-constitutional
