Iraq Defy Odds To Win Asian Cup

Iraq completed one of sport's great fairytales by beating Saudi Arabia 1-0 in the Asian Cup final on Sunday to provide a rare moment for celebration in their war-torn homeland.

The Saudis had been bidding to become the first four-times winners of the tournament but Iraq, riding a wave of global sentiment, upset the hot-favourites for a rare slice of sporting glory.

Iraqi captain Younis Mahmoud scored the winner in the 71st minute when he climbed above the defence at the far post and headed a perfectly-weighted corner from Hawar Mulla Mohammed into the Saudi net.

When the final whistle sounded, the Iraq players collapsed to the ground in a mixture of shock and an unbridled emotion, kissing the turf and embracing each other after their country's finest sporting moment.

Saudi Arabia were outplayed by an Iraqi team riding high on a wave of national support.

The Iraqis created a string of chances, only to be denied by sloppy finishing and extraordinary saves from Saudi goalkeeper Yasser Al Mosailem.

Saudi Arabia had been the best attacking team in the tournament, scoring 12 goals on their way to the final, but could not find a way past the Iraqis, who had the best defence in the competition, conceding just two goals in six matches.

Few people had given Iraq any chance of winning the tournament after a haphazard preparation brought about by the war at home and facing opponents who were appearing in their sixth final in 23 years.

I dont know how many of you have been keeping up with Iraqi Soccer and the Asian Cup but I find this fascinating. These people deserve and have earned thier right to be a free people and we are going to stick this out and see this trough to the end. To hell with Congress and everybody who doesnt believe in the most important mission of our lifetime. WAY TO GO IRAQI'S!!!!! WOOOO HOOOOO!!!!

Americans aren't much on soccer but a win like this for the Iraqis will help morale immensely. It will be portrayed badly by the American and European liberal press or not at all. So much for fairness doctrine.

"Spreading Freedom" around the world is a longtime liberal agenda. I thought this was a conservative blog.

Thank's Angel,

Someday Angel, Someday :-)

I hope this will unite the Iraqi's and boost thier morale.

Soon Jenn I firmly believe there wont be alot of spin the media will be able to put on the good news coming from Iraq.

And I cant wait to see the looks on the faces of the defeat-in-retreat crowd then :-)

"Spreading Freedom" around the world is a longtime liberal agenda. I thought this was a conservative blog.

Gee I alway's thought it was an AMERICAN agenda!!

If you can tell me a better way to deal with the threats we face today besides spreading Democracy, I sure would love to hear it, and spare me your Ron Paul bullshit!

But,,...but,..the MSM tells us Iraqis hate one another. Shias kill Sunnis, Sunnis kill Kurds,..they all kill Americans! How can they possibly come together as a team and beat a dominant foe like the Saudis???

Iraq’s 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia on a 71st-minute header by captain Younis Mahmoud was an inspirational triumph for a team whose players straddle bitter and violent ethnic divides. After the game, Mahmoud called for the United States to withdraw its troops from his nation.

“I want America to go out,” he said. “Today, tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow, but out. I wish the American people didn’t invade Iraq and, hopefully, it will be over soon.”

Invading a nation to "spread freedom" (which is a LIE) is a LIBERAL agenda that dates back to Woordrow Wilson. Accept it.

You expect me to look at an PMSNBC post? PLEASE!!!

You fool you!

You never answered my question earlier, I'll pose it again:

If YOU have a better plan how to combat the terrorists than keeping them on the run, and spreading Democracy through the lands that breed terrorism, let's hear it!

If not move along back to your little Ron Paul cult.

You know, I used to at least think Ron Paul was a half way decent guy, a little messed up upstairs, but half way decent. Now, I hate the man thank's to you dopes!

Accept that :-)

Marie, these guys like anonymous are libertarians that cannot get any traction using the name libertarian so they have decided to try and hijack the conservative name. Make no mistake, guys like Ron Paul and their defeatist libertarian ideas are not conservative in the least. The ideas that the liberatrians have would have us speaking in German on the East coast and Japanese on the West coast if we had listened to them.

Morons, complete morons and it should be pointed out at every chance they are not conservatives, they are libertarians trying to hijack the conservative name because people get confused with the name libertarian, it's sounds like the hated and despised name "liberal. Even liberals are abandoning the name liberal and are calling themselves progressives now.

You stupid and futile liberatrians, I went to some of your meetings years ago when I began to buy into the silly non sense you espouse. It is all BS and you are so lost with your head in the sand. There is no hope to revive your failed party so now you will try and hijack ours. Won't work, go back to sleep, go back to your heads in the sand where you and your silly fecklesness came from. Even Thomas Jefferson the original libertarian grew and understood the nature of the world beyond the borders why have you two hundreds years later? I suppose it is for the lack of brains. Accept it and move along.

It's worse than that even!

I have had Libertarians comment here and they werent so far out of it they were in the clouds.

Actually most Libertarians are pro-defense.

These Ron Paul supporters are true nutballs.

But you nailed it, they are trying to hijack the Republican party and it just isnt going to happen!

I had someone once comment here from some place called I think the name was and they were agreeable with everything I say. I could google them I guess and get the link, but I remember going to thier webpage once and saw what they were about and they were deffinately not like this.

I'm affraid Ron Paul and his cult are in their own little world, and they are whacked!

Actually these Ron Paul supporters and most Dems that are nut's can simply kiss my ass!
