Vietnam Veterans Plan Rally to Protect Memorial During Iraq War Protest

WASHINGTON -- Iraq war protesters are planning to converge on Washington next month and several organizations, including the POW-MIA group Rolling Thunder, are banding together to protect sacred ground for Vietnam War veterans.

The rally March 17 against the war, organizers say, is to get under way in a grassy park near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, known as the wall.

Two veterans' groups said Wednesday they fear protesters may deface the memorial.

"We're going there to protect our memorial and show support for our troops," said Artie Muller, founder and executive director of Rolling Thunder.

Muller said he and other veterans grew concerned because during a January anti-war rally, some protesters spray-painted graffiti on the steps of the Capitol, and spit at Iraq War Veterans.

The anti-war ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) Coalition is organizing the protest to coincide with the fourth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion, which was launched on March 20, 2003, in Iraq.

Becker declined to estimate the number of protesters expected. He said the crowd will include some Iraq war veterans and their families.

From the Vietnam War Memorial, the protesters plan to march to the Pentagon to demand an immediate withdrawal of U.S troops from Iraq.

Larry Bailey, a retired Navy captain, said he and other Vietnam veterans aim to guard entrance points to the wall to keep protesters away. "They stand for things that are a total anathema to those of us who were the next generation after the 'great generation,'" he said.

In late January, tens of thousands of protesters marched in a Washington anti-war demonstration. The rally drew celebrities including Jane Fonda and Sean Penn as well as active-duty service members.

A small group of demonstrators managed to spray-paint the steps on the west side of the Capitol. Capitol Police said the writing was cleaned off quickly.

A Message From Deborah John's To The American People

To The American People
By Deborah Johns
February 26, 2007

Editor's Note: Deborah Johns is the mother of Marine Sgt. William Johns, USMC, who is serving his third tour of duty in Iraq.
---

I am sick and tired. Sick and tired of how some in this country are turning their backs on our troops at a time when they need our support the most!

This is why I am taking action to speak up, and in particular, why I am helping to lead the "THESE COLORS DON'T RUN" national pro-troop/patriotic caravan being organized by Move America Forward.

This is my letter to you, the American people.

Semper Fidelis: These are not just mere words, they have a meaning greater than their literal definition in a dictionary. They mean "Always Faithful."

Not only is this the motto of the United States Marines, but also of their families, and it has spilled over into the hearts and souls of all those who serve in every branch of our military and their families as well.

Always Faithful to God. Always Faithful to your brother (or sister) who serves along side you. Always Faithful to your Country... Always Faithful to your Family... Always Faithful to your Commander in Chief.

People ask me every day, "how do you get through the days with a son serving in Iraq?"

Well, the answer is an obvious one. Always Faithful to God, Always Faithful to the heroic men and women of the U.S. military who serve along side my son. Always Faithful to the Commander in Chief, Always Faithful to my Country.

However, it does not seem that our political leaders and media representatives have remained Always Faithful

I have traveled across this country and I have listened to the American people. I have heard the support that is expressed for our military and I know that the American people do support the war on terror. They just want communication. They just want to know what the goals and objectives are.

I understand that the American people wanted change in leadership in the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. I understand the American people want things to go better in Iraq so our troops can come home. However, none of this can be accomplished because of the partisan politics that are taking place, which is ultimately hurting our military. You can't imagine how much it sickens me to see our troops used as little more than pawns in a chess game where some politicians care more about putting our President in "checkmate" than they do in winning the war our sons and daughters are bravely fighting.

I am tired of those defeat & retreat politicians who say they are patriotic, and then insult the Commander in Chief at a time when we have boots on the ground in war zones.

I am tired of the politicians who want us to wave the white flag of surrender, but who then tell me how much they "support our troops." As a military mom I can tell you that no soldier, Marine, sailor, airmen or Guardsmen wants to risk his or her life in a military mission, only to have political leaders denouncing the validity and morality of the missions that these troops are serving in. That is NOT supporting our troops.

Their very presence defaces the Memorial. Even if they don't deface it with grafitti etc. I guarentee they will do their pitiful bodily functions, if you get my point, around the Memorial both to relieve themselves and as a protest. These morons ar wahco idots who need a one way ticket to France or somewhere where they are harmless and fit in with society!

I checked it all out Marie and I'm getting a contingent of vets from around here, mostly Marine/Navy but I talked to some people about going and we're ready.

My Mother's cousin was an F-4 Navy pilot shot down and killed over North Vietnam around 68, his name is on the wall. I met him a few times when I was child and it was talked about for a long time at family functions. War protestors would not have survived at one of those functions.

I come from a long line of warriors on both sides of my family. We get called, we answer and we go to win.

Well, some of us do, j_g. My part in winning the Cold War was all about checking fire extinguishers and showing Victory at Sea reruns on the local AFTV station.
My son's role in the downfall of Saddam Hussein was loading trucks at a motor pool in Texas.
During Gulf War I, my brother's reserve unit was called up and he had to play the saxaphone at concerts all over Kansas.
I believe it was Milton who observed, "They also serve who only stand and wait".

Then they better be ready for the amount of Viet Nam Vets and Bikers that will be there this time, you know those Bikers they can be very unpleasent people when they have to be :-)

They catch that and they may be having thier bodily functions passing into a plastic bag attached to thier side after they get out of the hospital!

Naturally the Caravan is bypassing Oklahoma City (Why I dont know when the I-40 runs straight across the Country) so I guess the bus wont be picking me up.

God I would LOVE to go. I have heard that they are trying to organize a rally at the State Capitol in downtown OKC.

I WILL be attending that!

Thank You Word.

I think it is time for the people on the right to make as much noise and Public Spectacles of themselves as they possibly can.

I think it's time we all stand up for what we believe in and give these white flag waving idiots a piece of our minds!

I'm almost positive Word if you cant make it to D.C., there will be an event somewhere in LA.

We just gotta keep checking to make sure what's going on and when.

Uncle Pav, It makes little difference what the job was that you did. You offered yourself up to serve and do whatever they asked you to do. Not everyone was raising the flag at Iwo Jima either but everyone pitching in is what won the war.

Over in Iraq they go to Kuwait to train and take a break and there have to be people that take care of the bases there even though they aren't the front line troops.

Everyone pitching in and going forward with the attitude of winning is what really counts. The attitude of our troops and the perception by the enemy that our troops are morally and physically up to the challenge brings their morale down. That's why things like this rally are so important. High morale of the troops is essential element to winning.

I detest the manuevering by the democrats in congress. They are so heavily invested in defeat that their aim is to drag the morale of our troops down to a level that it makes it seem it is impossable for them to win. That's what the Japanese aim was with the broadcasts of Tokyo Rose during WWII.

Piss on the democrats and a pox on their houses.

Until we moved recently to a new post, I used to counterprotest with other military wives a bunch of peaceniks who held weekly "vigils" against the war effort. These people are very violent and aggressive for peace folks.

We've been pushed into on-coming traffic, approached unprovoked and screamed at, yelled profanities... one "peace" guy came up to us while we were simply holding signs down the street in favor of the war effort and started spewing hatred and profanity... he worked himself into such a tizzy that he almost walked into rush hour traffic. He'd lost all sense of time and space because he was so beside himself with hatred. Unfortunately, this vitriol is commonplace amongst the "peace" crowd.

They WILL deface, they WILL profane, and they will DISGRACE, but over my dead body! I'd be there in DC at the war memorial if I could but we're too far away. Anyone who is able to go absolutley should. It'll be a experience they'd never forget.

I also think uncle pavian might be on to something about the NPP not showing up...

Dang Amy for Peaceful Protestors as they claim to be, they are anything but!

I have had alot of health issues lately but I have some time between now and March 17 to heal up. I am seriously thinking about renting a car to make it to this one. I hope this turnout is HUGE!!

Hopefully with all the Biker groups that will be turning out, some of those freaks will think twice about spitting on a Troop or defacing any of our Memorials. I would even love to see the Hells Angels show up at this one lol. We remember how they all felt about Hanoi Jane!

It's time we all shout them down for a change and I am going to do everything on my end to try to make this into a HUGE event!

I think America is truly getting tired of all the Troop bashing, the defacing, the spiting on our Troops, just this whole mess in General. God knows I am! After all this is NOT the 60's anymore.

I sure will try like heck to attend the D.C. event, but if all else fails I think they are having one at the State Capitol downtown and if that isnt happening I will start my own!

That would be nice if the NPP called in sick lol

Hey young lady!

Thanks for the link! Glad to see you on board my ship. You know you are always welcome.

I was invited to attend with Bushwhack from http://americanandproud.net/ who will be flying out from California with his wife, but I probably won't be able to make the journey to D.C.

I did pledge bail money for Bushwack if needed. His wife will just give me a call.

Hey Young Man,

You are most welcome for the link!

If I manage to make it to D.C., can I email you for bail money? lol

Just in case of course :-)

I'm kidding I already have arrangements with my family for that (And trust me they know how I can get lol)

It's a darn shame the caravan wont be going through Oklahoma City, I could catch the bus downtown! Why they are going down south and through Texas is a waste of time and gas! The I-40 runs most of the way through the Country and then you hit the 44 which will get you there or close. That down south route is kind of crazy. You can catch the 40 from Cali and stay there through Oklahoma, then get on the 44 and smooth sailing!

It sure would be nice if we all could make it to D.C., that would be so cool. But if we all cant there must be a rally in our towns somewhere that we can attend!

We will see what happens :-)

Go Navy!! And Semper Fi!

Even though the number of supporters numbered only around 100 plus, it was great, because Deborah Johns, Debra Argel, and Mark Crowley were very approachable and I gave each them a hug of thank you.

I am excited for you Marie. This looks to be a historic event.
