Green Sex/Your Eco-Friendly Guide

Love-making gets green light from adult stores

You've heard of green cars, green tourism and green weddings. Now Canadians should ready themselves for green sex.

For those who like to make love to the soundtrack of the global warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth, Greenpeace has released a list of strategies for "getting it on for the good of the planet," suggesting "you can be a bomb in bed without nuking the planet." TreeHugger, an online magazine edited by Ontario's Michael Graham Richard, has just published a guide on "how to green your sex life." The famed adult store Good Vibrations announced last week they would no longer sell sex toys containing phthalates, controversial chemical plasticizers believed by some to be hazardous to humans and the environment alike.

And throughout Canada and the U.S., people who want to pleasure the planet can now buy everything from bamboo bed sheets to organic lubricant and "eco-undies."

"Green living is getting sexy," says Jacob Gordon, author of's recent green guide for the bedroom.

"Even a year ago, people wouldn't have been nearly as receptive to this kind of thing. ... But, as the importance of living green gains traction in our culture, people are willing to take things like that a lot more seriously."

Most environmentalists will agree the mainstream success of the Al Gore vehicle An Inconvenient Truth has helped give climate change the pop-culture sheen it's currently enjoying. Indeed, global warming is a cause to which everyone from Diesel apparel to Vanity Fair magazine and Starbucks are pinning their marketing efforts.

And if shopping to save the planet is trendy, having sex to clear your conscience is at the cutting edge.

"It feels like people are just waking up to the fact the planet is suffering under our uses of it," says Rebecca Denk, business manager for the adult toy store Babeland. The U.S. company, which sells to Canadians via, just introduced an "Eco-Sexy Kit" featuring a phthalate-free vibrator, soy massage candle, a natural lubricant with no animal-testing or derivatives, and condoms.

"We have to look at every piece of our lives, including our sexuality, and ask: How is this healthy for me, and how is this healthy for the planet?" says Denk. "Hopefully, we're all becoming better global citizens."

Other ways of "greenwashing" the bedroom, as outlined by TreeHugger and Greenpeace, include turning out the lights, not buying PVC or vinyl accoutrements, ensuring S&M paddles are made from sustainably harvested timber, using organic massage oils, showering together, using bamboo bed sheets (they come from a rapidly renewable resource and are said to be "super sexy"), and wearing lingerie made with renewable fibres such as hemp (Enamore), bamboo (Butta) and other organic goodness (GreenKnickers, Buenostyle, Peau Ethique).

Gordon notes there's even an eco-friendly adult website dedicated to naked vegetarians, appropriately called Veg Porn.

Camille Labchuk, speaking on behalf of the Green Party of Canada, gives the movement two green thumbs-up.

"The general concern for trying to live lightly on our planet has transferred into all areas of people's lives," says Labchuk, the Green party's press secretary. "So, even though what goes on in our bedrooms as a nation is somewhat hidden, we know that's somewhere people want to green-up."

"Unbelievable nitwits"? LOL! You said it!

"Make love to the soundrack of the global warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth." Unh... I think not!

Some people on this planet are truly certifiable and should be locked up for their own safety.

Sorry Jenn, I didnt have a "Global Warming" photo that would fit in with this wickedness.

I thought hunting down a picture of an eco-friendly vibrator was a bit much.

Maybe Gore will re-release his movie with a few changes, a change in rating and a new title. "A Convenient Sex" He and Tipper could demonstrate all the new geen equipment while showing graphs of GW according to Al. He seems to get a thrill doing this now the Canadians have given him a means to go for the to speak.

Lunacy at it craziest!

By all means, all of your fellow wackos are welcome to service yourselves with phthalates products causing most of your minority to die off from testicular and ovarian cancers. God bless, go forth,...knock yourselves out! Die in ignorance, ... if you trust the chemical manufacturers to not take advantage of the public trust over corporate profits. Just don't insist the rest of the world has to live by your whack a do, mass moranic dictates.

There is a phenomenon known as "cognitive dissonance". "...It can be the filtering of information that conflicts with what one already believes, in an effort to ignore that information and reinforce one's beliefs". When we make a decision, we cannot ignore objectivity and choose to believe in what mirrors our current perceptions. We have to ask ourselves, "Am I coming with a goal in mind?"

"2004 - a joint Swedish-Danish research team found a very strong link between allergies in children and the phthalates DEHP and BBzP."[5]

"2005 - A study by Swan et al. reported that human phthalate exposure during pregnancy changed an anogenital measurement in the baby boys later born, a change that in rodents exposed to phthalates is associated with genital abnormalities". [6]

"Environmental impact, as well as health effects in consumers and in chemical workers have been assessed and found to pose no risk....The report contradicts the previous conclusions and precautionary measures adopted by the EU government".

So we are not completely sure what the effects of this chemical will be yet. Yet there are indicators that it may pose a risk. How much evidence do we have to have?

Whether you choose to believe in Global Warming or not, the fact is that there are other very serious issues at hand right now. For example, we will not be able to continue building more roads and automobiles. It absolutely cannot continue at the current rate.

If you live in a city, you know that pollution does exist and has a negative effect on people and natural systems. Cars eat up tax dollars, cause us to rely on outside sources for fuel, and are wasteful. In addition to spewing carbon, cars add nitrogen dioxide, lead, carbon monoxide, ozone and hydrocarbons to the air that we breathe. When the rains come, these are washed into the water table.

Pepsi and Coke have and are setting up manufacturing facilities in 3rd world countries. They put these plants above villages and towns. The water is taken from the rivers and bottled. Then it is shipped all around the world. They do this because water rights are not well defined, and the workers are cheap. However, the water source for the towns downstream is exploited, and the communities have no water. This has caused civil wars Is this ethical?

While other countries fight for drinking water, my grandpa can use all the irrigated water he wants each year for $50. The average lawn receives 4xs the amount of fertilizer as the average crop for food production. The water he uses to water his lawn runs off, and it takes the pesticides with it. The fish and wildlife that are downstream are forced to keep on with high levels of chemicals. The phosphates cause algae, less oxygen, and higher temperatures that stress the fish.

We as a developed country have the least accurate view of global events according to independent sources.

Our education system is #24 in effectiveness in the Western world. We also cause 60% of resource use by humans, although we only account for 5% of the population.

Yes, people will make money off of any new political event. Look how much money the church makes, how much the oil industry makes, and how much the government makes from wars and weapons manufacturing. How much money has Wal-Mart taken from your townspeople and sent to the Walton headquarters? How are brand names using catch phrases to shape your opinions? There is a war on for all of our minds.

As an example of the government making money at the expense of people, the Reagan Administration used the money it made from selling ammunitions and weapons in Iran to fund illegal, destructive forces in South America. This led to a major destruction in this region's stability. Because Congress refused to fund these ventures, corporations were used in a shadow government to fund the projects.

I guess what I'm saying in all this is that we all live downstream, and we can't continue our ways forever. Before we came here, the Native Americans cared for the lands. They were wiped out, and we conquered nature. We are still in that mode, while much of the rest of the world has realized it must stop. Our resources are not infinite.
