U.S. To Play War Games Off The Coast Of Iran

U.S. Navy Launches Show Of Force Off Coast Of Iran

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates The U.S. Navy on Tuesday began its largest demonstration of force in the Persian Gulf since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, led by a pair of aircraft carriers and backed by warplanes flying simulated attack maneuvers off the coast of Iran.

The maneuvers bring together two strike groups of U.S. warships and more than 100 U.S. warplanes to conduct simulated air warfare in the crowded Gulf shipping lanes.

The U.S. exercises come just four days after Iran's capture of 15 British sailors and marines who Iran said had strayed into Iranian waters near the Gulf. Britain and the U.S. Navy have insisted the British sailors were operating in Iraqi waters.

U.S.S. Stennis

U.S. Navy Cmdr. Kevin Aandahl said the U.S. maneuvers were not organized in response to the capture of the British sailors — nor were they meant to threaten the Islamic Republic, whose navy operates in the same waters.

He declined to specify when the Navy planned the exercises.

Aandahl said the U.S. warships would stay out of Iranian territorial waters, which extend 12 miles off the Iranian coast.

U.S.S. Eisenhower

A French naval strike group, led by the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, was operating simultaneously just outside the Gulf. But the French ships were supporting the NATO forces in Afghanistan and not taking part in the U.S. maneuvers, officials said.

Overall, the exercises involve more than 10,000 U.S. personnel on warships and aircraft making simulated attacks on enemy shipping with aircraft and ships, hunting enemy submarines and finding mines.

"What it should be seen as by Iran or anyone else is that it's for regional stability and security," Aandahl said. "These ships are just another demonstration of that. If there's a destabilizing effect, it's Iran's behavior."

Mr Iran has found himself and his country in a very bad position. The country of Iran is surrounded on three sides by American and British forces. Iraq to the West, Afghanistan to the east and the sea to the south. Iran has one oil refinery to supply it defenses with fuel.

During the war with Iraq in the 1980s Iraq sent missile after missile into Tehran and eventualy Ayatollah Khomeni realized that sending under equipped human waves against an army that possessed much higher technology and tactics were virtually useless and had to sue for peace.

The US Navy is capable of bringing Iran's defenses to the ground in a matter of days with two carrier battle groups off of her shore.

The smart thing for the Iranians to do is hand over my British cousins, stop developing nuclear weapons and become part of the community at large by overthrowing the tyranical extremist regime. Pretty simple stuff really. These are hardcore radical muslims though that rule this formerly advanced society.

I think one of the most powerful weapons we could use against Iran is to tell them we will send Rosie O'Donnell, Sean Penn, Mrs Bill Clinton and Barbara Steisand over there if they don't surrender. I can see the white flags hanging from every window in Tehran now.

Jenn,

Nah, they would like Sean Penn, that wouldnt work out well, but the rest of them weee heee!!

I seriously think they better hand over these Sailors or all hell is going to bust loose and we may have our troops back home faster than anyone expected.

And Harry Reid trying to pack his fudge in a bill not letting the President do what he needs to with Iran better get off the table pretty damn quick.

Yep Iran is in a heap of trouble this time.

Just when shit is about to hit the fan, just like with our Hostages that were taken, watch them give them back.

That's usually the way Iran operates.

Hi Marie! No... I'm not posting yet; just snooping! ;)

Great post! I think we should also send Reid to Iran and see how he likes it over there.

Yep, Iran is biting off far more than it is able to chew, and all hell will break loose if those men aren't returned. I think you're right; they'll play games to the last minute and then concede, just like always.

Back in the days when I was winning the Cold War by showing Victory at Sea reruns on an AFTV station in Greece, my opposite number at the airbase at Hellenikon was a guy by the name of Kevin Aandahl.
Same guy? Could be, but this was in about 1978, so, he'd be in his early 50s and have been in the Navy for about 30 years.
Me, I returned to civilian life once I realized that I would never make Chief Journalist because of a quirk in the eligibility rules for the advanced technical school.
Funny how things work out, yes?

I can call you Chief if I want Uncle Pav... er I mean Chief. I was a Machinist's Mate 2nd Class and I guess that's better than no class. I broke a few nails contributing to the downfall of Soviet aggression.

The coolest thing I saw was Soviet Aircraft Carrier Ussr Kiev
Aircraft Carrier Ussr Kiev. It was small compared to the carrier we were traveling with.
Ussr Kiev/USS America

The Kiev was sort of like the Hermes Class British Carrier HMS Ark Royal that carried Harrier jets and a ramped flight deck. I saw the Kiev in one of our forays into the Baltic for a "lets see whatcha got" mission. Cool stuff, I wish I was young enough to get back in the game. I'm just spinning my wheels at the railroad anyway:-)

Oh yea, just a note in history here. The aircraft carrier I spoke of that my ship was traveling with was theUSS America CV-66 it was decommissioned and just sunk as a reef in an undisclosed location.

Iran has been at war with us since 1979. It's about time we realized it. How many more Americans will their bought and paid for terrorists Hezbollah kill (289 so far)?

The Iranian regime is a criminal regime. It appalls me that nitwits like Rosie O'Donnel would defend them. If she was in Iran, they would execute her, as they do all discovered homosexuals.

Sending waves of children into minefields and to be mowed down by Iraqi machine guns is beyond inhuman and evil.

The mullahs need to go and they need to go soon.

Mike, people like Rosie O'Donnell have no idea on what is really going on. O'Donnell is beyond ridiculous and even the women at the table are getting fed up with her stupidity. One day she will push it too far and be forced off the show and be publicly humiliated by her own words, it's only a matter of time.

Iran has been at war with us since 1979. It's about time we realized it.

According to Mark Bowden, he thinks this is the beginning of the war with militant Islam (authored the book, "Guests of the Ayatollah"); Lawrence Wright traces the roots back to al Qaeda, during the 1940's, with one man: Syed Qtub.

Of course, over at Gates of Vienna, Dymphna and the Baron think the war with Islam goes back at least to the siege of Vienna in 1529. Personally, I think the conflict with these guys goes back much farther, to about the time of the third chapter of the Book of Genesis.
It's the same problem, and it's got the same solution.

I've been at war with the militant Isamics since they took the hostages in 1979. I was just around the corner when it happened and they held me on station until reenforcements were brought in.

Damn, I'm in almost as good a shape as I was when I was in, I want back in so bad but they won't let me. I can still handle a .50 bmg I think I have a case for age discrimination. I'd be firing until they were dead or me. They could talk about how I was killed but they wouldn't be able to use me as a propaganda tool wearing a hijab. F--- them!!!

I hate to say it, but Kevron's probably right this time. The UK talks a good game but when it comes time to put up or shut up, they don't deliver. I don't believe this is Blair's fault, however. I believe it is the fault of the anti- freedom traitors in the British parliament. They are mirror images of the traitors (Democrats) in our own Government.

The reason we can't just blow these jerks off the face of the earth is because of the weakling anti-American, pro terrorists right here in our own Houses of Congress.

I'm so sick of them I want to puke.

Mike,

I dont know what it's going to take or how many people will it take before they realize this whole thing started with Iran, and will end with Iran.

Rosie O'Donnel, just like Sean Penn should go move to Iran if they love it so much.

Mark,

KEvron is right? PLEASE!!! The British will see the error of thier ways? They didnt do anything!! They were in "Iraqi" waters and they were forceably removed and now paraded on tv just like our hostages were.

We disagree on this point. But I will agree the HMS Cornwall should have fired on those idiots and put a stop to this mess before it got this damn far.

The reason we can't just blow these jerks off the face of the earth is because of the weakling anti-American, pro terrorists right here in our own Houses of Congress.

That I will agree with.
