Dems Use Cadaver In Campain Ad
Wieland denounces 'cadaver' ad
WATERLOO --- Republican Iowa House District 20 candidate David Wieland and Iowa House Speaker Christopher Rants of Sioux City have denounced a political advertisement released this weekend against Wieland showing what appears to be a covered cadaver on a gurney, assailing his position on stem-cell research.
Wieland said he supports adult, but not embryonic, stem-cell research, but said the ad implies "If you vote for Dave Wieland, you're going to kill people."
He and Rants called the ad a new low in the already vitriolic campaign between Wieland and Democrat Doris Kelley for the District 20 seat being vacated by the retiring Waterloo Republican Willard Jenkins.
"She (Kelley) has thrown out all bounds of decency," Wieland said today. "I have never done an attack like this on my opponent," except to refer to Kelley as a "lobbyist."
"I have never, ever seen anything that even comes close to that," Rants said "Candidates always trade barbs over their record. But I've never seen a campaign swing into saying, 'If you vote for this guy, people are going to die.' That's clearly the inference they are trying to make."
The ad, which has an Iowa Democratic Party return address, shows a young woman on oxygen apparently laying in bed. The next page shows what appears to be a covered body laying on a hospital gurney.
"We could cure her disease. But Dave Wieland opposes life saving stem-cell research," the ad states.
The ad cites as the basis of its information a candidate questionnaire from the Iowa Christian Alliance. On that survey, Wieland simply checked a box stating he supported a ban on embryonic stem cell research and human cloning.
Tom Powers, Kelley's campaign co-manager, said he approved of the ad without consulting Kelley. "It sends a message on stem cell research," he said. "When you're running for a public office and you're setting policy for a state, the voters need to seek the difference" between the candidates.
"I'll take responsibility for anything that goes out," Kelley said. "The message I stand by. The photos is where I have a problem. I told the (Iowa Democratic) Party that I did not like this type of campaigning. I do not approve of this type of campaigning, and I will do everything I can if elected to make some changes in the campaign process."
Kelley said she is ceasing this type of campaigning and asked Wieland to do the same. "I'm surprised he (Wieland) is complaining now when he has mailed out so many fliers with false information and even put that kind of information into his radio and TV ads," she said.
Kelley was upset with advertising put out by the Republican State Leadership Committee of Washington, D.C., against her campaign questioning her actions and motivation in campaigning for a 1994 referendum for Cedar Falls Utilities to add a municipal communications utility, then serving as CFU's marketing coordinator for several years. Wieland disassociated himself from those ads and said they were not helpful to his campaign.
Kelley felt he did not denounce them enough. Rants said today he called the RSLC complaining about the ads, but the ads continued. Kelley responded with other ads of her own.
"It seems like it's just this constant back and forth and it's getting a little ridiculous," Kelley said. "I have stopped it. I ask that he do the same. His campaign tactics have been very disgusting."

You're not seriously getting death threat's are you?
No the commercial and the candidates lol.
I don't know why this should come as a surprise, Marie. For years, almost every Democrat in the country has owed his or her election to the votes of dead people.
Happy motoring...
How did this campaign suddenly go from "Bush is the anti-Christ" to stem-cell research as the hot-button topic?
Are the Dems THAT desperate??
I think Laura Ingram summed up the whole debate about what's going on over in Missouri. Laura was on O'Reilly last night and said that the whole thing is about making a constitutional amendment in Missouri to guarantee the right to be able to clone embryos from other embryos to be use for stem cell research.
Micahel J. Fox was there to campaign for the dem and used this issue to try and hammer Senator Talent for being against this purposely confusing amendment to the Missouri State Constitution.
I listened to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Alan Combs, Bill O'Reilly but Laura Ingram was the most informative of any of them on this entire issue.
Rush was directed away from the core issue having to defend himself from attacks from the willing accomplices in the press just looking for a reason to attack and weaken Limbaugh. I thought Limbaugh's stance on Michael Fox and defense of it were correct but it takes time to defend from an all out, emotion based attack from the powerful elements of the leftwing media.
Using any means to get elected is something that has been used by dems for so long nothing surprises me but sometimes it is difficult to defend against a political movement that will stoop to these tactics.
Uncle P,

I know, someone needs to get it across to the voters in Missouri this has more to do with Cloneing, than Stem Cell research!
I think this is what Ann Coulter meant by "We arent suppose to be able to attack the victim", every single election the Democrat's roll out a victim and we are suppose to sit back and take it?
Not anymore!
Why won't the Democrats who support embryonic Stem cell research be honest about what it really means.
It means the harvesting of human embryos which are then destroyed in medical cloning procedures.
It's too bad that human embryos aren't as graphic as a corpse on a gurney, but it's basically the same thing. A human life killed for the sake of another.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's time for a hard hitting commercial of scientific proportions showing the actual slaughter of a Human Embryo just to get the stem cells for someone they have already done research on that wont benefit from this nonsense at all. I know it sounds harsh, but I would like to put this thing to bed once and for all.
You know this whole thing remind's me of the time the Democrat's rolled out Chris Reeve and Senator Edwards said "We can make this man get up and walk again".
And yet President Bush is the ONLY President in US History that has allowed any money for researching any of this stuff EVER. And so far NOTHING. Nothing even looking as if a cure is anywhere near. They are having better luck with ADULT STEM CELL RESEARCH.
