Senate Approves Terror Detainee Interrogation Bill
Senate Approves Terror Detainee Interrogation Bill
Thursday, September 28, 2006
WASHINGTON — The Senate on Thursday endorsed President Bush's plans to prosecute and interrogate terror suspects, all but sealing congressional approval for legislation that Republicans intend to use on the campaign trail to assert their toughness on terrorism.
The 65-34 vote means the bill could reach the president's desk by week's end. The House passed nearly identical legislation on Wednesday and was expected to approve the Senate bill on Friday, sending it on to the White House.
The bill would create military commissions to prosecute terrorism suspects. It also would prohibit blatant abuses of detainees but grant the president flexibility to decide what interrogation techniques are legally permissible.
The White House and its supporters have called the measure crucial in the anti-terror fight, but some Democrats said it left the door open to abuse, violating the U.S. Constitution in the name of protecting Americans.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who helped draft the legislation during negotiations with the White House, said the measure would set up a system for treating detainees that the nation could be proud of. He said the goal "is to render justice to the terrorists, even though they will not render justice to us."
"There is no question that the rush to pass this bill — which is the product of secret negotiations with the White House — is about serving a political agenda," said Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass. (Well Of Course He's going to say that)
Senate approval was the latest step in the remarkable journey that Bush has taken in shaping how the United States treats the terrorism suspects it has been holding, some for almost five years.
The Supreme Court nullified Bush's initial system for trying detainees in June, and earlier this month a handful of maverick GOP senators embarrassed the president by forcing him to slightly tone down his next proposal. But they struck a deal last week, and the president and congressional Republicans are now claiming the episode as a victory.
While Democrats warned the bill could open the way for abuse, Republicans said defeating the bill would put the country at risk of another terrorist attack.
"We are not conducting a law enforcement operation against a check-writing scam or trying to foil a bank heist," said Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. "We are at war against extremists who want to kill our citizens."
Approving the bill before lawmakers leave for the elections has been a top priority for Republicans. GOP leaders fought off attempts by Democrats and a lone Republican to change the bill, ensuring swift passage.

Our President sure has the knack for stating the obvious eh? "Democrats are obstructionist", yeah, that pretty goes without saying.
We're going to be hearing a lot of stuff that's obvious to right thinking individuals such as most of your regular vistors here Marie. I guess I just get angry that the prez has to go out say these obvious things to those that don't pay very much attetion to what's going on. Many don't even know who their Representaives are or what they do at either local, State or federal levels and that frustrates the heck out of me. Then those same people go out and vote with the knowledge of something they heard Katie Couric say or something equally as superfluous. aaaarrrgggghhhhhh!!!!!
Ain't republicanism grand? U betcha!
"that pretty much goes without saying"
I used to go through the whole process of writing my comments and checking the grammar and spelling very meticulously in a MS Word document evey time. I have gotten away from that as is obvious by my spelling and capitalizations and grammar. I just fire away without much more than one proof reading. It'll get better.
I actually lived in Florida for 10 years. I knew who my US Congressman was. And I'm glad to say it wasn't this guy:
Congressman Mark Foley (R-FL) planned to resign today, hours after ABC questioned him about sexually explicit internet messages with current and former Congressional pages under the age of 18.
A spokesman for Foley, the chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children, said the congressman submitted his resignation in a letter late this afternoon to Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert.
Hours earlier, ABC News had read excerpts of instant messages provided by former pages who said the congressman, under the AOL Instant Messenger screen name Maf54, made repeated references to sexual organs and acts.
The full details will be included in a report tonight on ABC World News with Charles Gibson.
I guess the "ick" factor knows no party lines.

If this is true and from what I'm hearing right now it sounds credible. You'll have to stand aside Mrs. Green while I'm the first one to throw this gu under the bus. I have no tolerance for child molestors. I looked this guy up earlier when I heard he was resigning his seat. The media accused him of being Gay back in 2003. I could care less if he is Gay but if he is a child molestor then he deserves as much as can be put on him.
JG,

I'm not sure I have ever seen such a bunch of obstuctionists in all my life! If it isnt Teedy Kennedy half drunk up there badgering ANYONE President Bush nominates for a certain post, he's up there with these huge charts and graphs and rambles on and on until there is no time for anything else.
Then you have Robert KKK Byrd who is so damn old now it takes him 20 minutes to get out one damn sentence!
Some of these guys gotta go!
Republicanism Grand? Yep, You Betcha!

Mrs Green, and JG,
You will have to let me cut in line there because I would like to take a whap at him myself if this is correct!
Speaking of the ick factor
How is Jim McGreevy doing these days?
Speaking of the ick factor
How is Jim McGreevy doing these days?
McGreevy was a hypocrite. Living the life of a hetero, but not admitting to his true self. Homosexuality between consenting adults is not "icky" to me.
It is "icky" by a magniture of 1,000,000 when a anyone--homo or hetero molests or preys on a child.
And I say that as a woman who was molested by two adult heterosexual men when I was a little girl. 5 years old.
You never forget that trauma. Never. I've forgiven them. But I'm still haunted by it.

With all due respect Mrs Green, How did we go from McGreevy cheating on his wife with a MAN, (Which is what I was talking about) to you being assaulted a s a child?

I was responding to jg. The point I apparently didn't make was actually agreeing with jg.
McGreevy was a creep, for sure for being a hypocrite and causing his family all the grief he did.
But homosexuals who are in a monogamous relationship with consenting adults don't bother me.
I was agreeing with her on not having tolerance for predators of children--hetero and homo. I'm helping jg throw them under the bus.
No matter how many years are between you and what a predator did to you, it triggers all sorts of emotions. This post and my reactions attest to that.
My Local talk show morning guy had McGreevy on while I was driving home in the morning after work. You want to talk ick I'm no prude and I work around guys that talk about well, gross guy stuff and I got to tell you McGreevy was grossing me out. I wish him and his book would go away, it's disgusting.
I want to smack the dog**** out of the guy from Florida
The more I hear about politics, the more persuaded I am that there is something seriously deficient with the character of anyone who runs for office. Some more than others, and some can keep a lid on it, and some manage to keep getting elected because their constituents don't care, but I've never heard of a politician who was somebody I'd want to sit next to on a bus.
I think we can all agree that anyone that harms a child needs to be put in jail and not let around children again if they survive their sentence in jail.
I agree with you Uncle Pav. It seems that we are not attracting the best and brightest to hold political office anymore. It seems like the ones that are able to withstand or just plain ignore the most pain are the ones to get and stay elected. I don't know how to change that other than keep trying to get people educated to get and vote and hold their elected officials to higher standards.
Mrs Green, and JG,
The more I have been finding out about this whole Chuck Hagel incident it is making me sick to my stomach.
He was supposed to watching out for the kids and instead he was emailing a 16 year old boy pretty sexualy explicit crap!
I am sickened by this and I think he needs more than any possible slap on the wrist, he needs some jail time.
Throw him under the bus and back up and run over him again!
Uncle P,

More like run them over with a bus, I have seen very few that were worth a hoot, and they arent even in office anymore. Wonder why?
But I gotta make a choice in November and I have to go with the party that will help the President keep me safe!

You sound like my Dad!
My Dad says "Look what they do to us", which is the way alot of Americans feel.
If I were in charge I would make them feel more than just Uncomfortable! I wouldnt go as far as burning thier toes off, we seem to be doing something right to have prevented getting attacked again in 5 and a half years!
