Way To Go President Bush!! McCain?, You Getting All This?
Bush calls on Congress to lift offshore drilling ban
Bush Looks Offshore to Fix High Oil Prices
US President George W. Bush on Wednesday urged Congress to lift a decades-old ban on offshore oil drilling to reduce dependence on foreign imports and offset sky-high energy prices.
Calling the federal ban "outdated and counterproductive," Bush asked the Democratic-controlled Congress to take action to expand access to the nation's Outer Continental Shelf.
"Congress must face a hard reality. Unless members are willing to accept gas prices at today's painful levels or even higher, our nation must produce more oil, and we must start now," Bush said in a news conference in the White House Rose Garden.
Bush called on lawmakers to expand US oil production by increasing access to the Outer Continental Shelf, citing experts who say access the OCS could produce about 18 billion barrels of oil.
"That would be enough to match America's current oil production for almost 10 years," he said.
Under the 1981 federal moratorium, states are prohibited from allowing offshore oil and gas drilling and exploration, protecting virtually the entire Atlantic and Pacific coastlines and sections of the Gulf of Mexico.

Amen!
Every time I hear some Democrat or liberal Democrat mention Bush in the same paragraph as the current high gas prices, I refer them to their fellow travellers in Congress who prevent domestic oil recovery.
One stock reply is "That's your opinion", to which I respond, "No, it's proveable fact, as opposed to the Democratic party's bumper sticker B---S---."
The Dems' "mares-eat-oats" version of reality will be the end of this country yet.
I put Newt's new ad up at Mike's America.
Also, thought you might like the bumper sticker:

P.S. You're going to hear a lot of B.S. from Dems who say we already allow 68 million acres offshore for oil drilling. Two things: first, that's a tiny amount of the total offshore area and second, the oil companies are already drilling in every one of those acres where they have found oil.
The remaining acres don't have any oil. Are Democrats suggesting we should drill where there is no oil?
yes girl!..drill drill drill!!..no more cowtowing to Saudis!
The best response to this asinine idea was in today's NY Times: "The Energy Information Administration says that even if both coasts were opened, prices would not begin to drop until 2030. The only real beneficiaries will be the oil companies that are trying to lock up every last acre of public land before their friends in power — Mr. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney — exit the political stage" (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/19/opinion/19thu1.html).
It's time to see this scheme for what it is: yet another attempt by Bush and Cheney to enrich the coffers of oil companies owned and run by their friends and large campaign contributors.
@ Mike's America: The House Committee on Natural Resources issued a report that stated only 1/4 of the 90 million acres, onshore and off, that the federal government leases to oil companies is being drilled. Perhaps the oil companies could begin to drill the land they already lease. Or perhaps they don't have sufficient infrastructure to drill the land they already have access to. Maybe the problem is not the need for more drilling opportunities, but the need for more drilling and refining infrastructure.
@ WomanHonorThyself: The U.S. owns less than 4% of the world's oil supplies. To think that Bush's or McCain's plans will decrease gas prices is naive. Also, why should producers who obtain oil from the new proposed drilling areas charge less than the world market price for oil?
Gas is soon approaching the $5.00 level and yet, Obama and The don't Drill Democrats are still against it
It seem that anything that common sense people are for, the Lefty are against.
Once again we are on the same page, Marie. Excellent post!
I also just posted on this and I have some good information for you and your readers. McCain is reconsidering his stance on ANWR! :)
Seth,
Mares-Eat-Oats lol
You are so right. They blame Bush for the high price of oil one minute, then say "We went to Iraq for oil", the next minute and if that were true where is it?
The ONLY people holding up progress here are the Liberals and they are going to LOSE on this issue because 74% of the American people dont believe for once that it's Bush's fault anymore about oil!
74% of the Country says DRILL!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mike,
Thank You :-)
It's already started with the Liberals. I've heard all the stories of how we already have millions of acres untapped already, problem is they are untapped for a reason, we have way more advanced capabilities of finding oil now and dont constantly need to drill where it isnt feaseable.
We know for sure China is off our coast getting oil NOW! But we arent off our own coast getting it.
We know for sure there are 93 billion with a 'B' barrels of oil in ANWR. And that's just in one area the size of Dulles Airport!
Dont worry Mike, I've heard all the bullshit stories already from the left and they dont wash anymore.
I'm in this all the way till we fire up the first drill :-)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Angel,
Yes Ma'am. You hit the nail on the head. The Saudi's laugh at us because we arent already drilling in our own back yard!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ortho,
Asinine idea?
We know for sure where the oil is and we have more oil here in America that has gone untapped bcause of the environmental whakos than the ENTIRE Middle East!
It's time we drill HERE so we arent dependent on Foreign oil. We are being held hostage by the Middle East.
Do you know how they are laughing at us? And frankly they have every right to.
Who the hell are we to DEMAND OPEC produce more oil? We have it in our own backyard! So they laugh at us because we arent drilling in our own backyard.
If President Clinton would have NOT Veto'd the bill when it hit his desk in 1995 to lift the ban on offshore drilling, THE OIL WOULD BE ONLINE NOW!!
Nope, No Way. I'm tired of OPEC laughing at us, I'm tired of us not drilling in our own Country, and the only ones that are holding up this proccess is THE DEMOCRAT CONGRESS!
Piss on the Democrats!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DD,
You betcha!
The only thing holding up this whole supplying OURSELVES with OUR OWN NATIONAL RESOUSES, is Obama and the Democratically Controlled Congress!
It's time it comes to an end.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gayle,
Isnt that wonderful?
I knew if there was enough public outcry McCain would HAVE to come around.
McCain is going to HAVE to listen to us!! Or we are just going to MAKE HIM!
Ortho: You're being misled about the lack of drilling. The oil companies ARE exploring that acerage. But they don't drill if there is no oil. Surely, you are not suggesting they do.
The oil companies would not be asking permission to drill elsewhere if they had found oil where they had already obtained permission to drill. Do you follow the logic?
But at least it's nice to know that you endorse the idea of drilling. So now we can lease the areas offshore where there IS oil.
With that and ANWR we could go a long way to being energy independent in less than ten years.
Either that, or Democrats can just keep bitching about the price while they do nothing to make it go down.
74% of the Country says DRILL!!
Amazing.
When I point out that 75% of the country does NOT approve of George W. Bush and his administration, you guys say you don't believe in polls.
Why should anyone, then, believe that 74% of Americans say we must drill?
I'll do as you guys do when it comes to quoting percentages.
Pretend they're not true.
LOL!
joanne,
Polls should always be taken with a grain of salt; and if one really wants to go through the trouble, look at how the poll was conducted and pooled.
And I admit, we do tend to lean toward information that backs up our own beliefs.
Joanne,
There is a difference in approval polls, who's leading who in the election polls, and what the concensus of the American people want kind of polls.
I mean you have to admit, Barack Obama seems to be in the same spot that Kerry was in four years ago. And we all know how that poll turned out.
I'm not much for paying attention to the election polls and particularly one of President Bush's popularity.
You know why? CAUSE I NEVER GET POLLED! lol
But I did sign the petition which counted me as being "For" Drilling HERE in the US so I count in the 74%!
Welcome back Word :-)
That is the sound of the democracks marching in lockstep with failed energy policies that Bush has been trying to change since he became President. The time for real change, not Obama fake change or Obama backward change, real change in energy policy that lets us use our own natural resources and become self reliant.
I know democraks can't understand the concept of self reliance, they must always have the nanny state looking after them. It's way past the time for America to drill for more oil, build more refineries and develop all the sources we can to be self reliant. The argument about drilling now not reducing the cost of gasoline now is a stupid one and only very stupid people make that argument. The solution is "start now stupid".If we don't start now now it will never happen. It's the oil stupid.
