FINALLY SOME OUTRAGE!/Berkeley Revisit's Vote Against Marine Recruiting Station

Berkeley City Council to Revisit Vote Against Marine Recruiting Station

Two weeks after the Berkeley City Council called U.S. Marine Corps recruiters "uninvited and unwelcome intruders," the council is expected to reconsider its anti-Marine stance Tuesday night.

Large crowds from the left and right are mobilizing for the meeting. The anti-war feminist group Code Pink began a 24-hour "peace-in" Monday night, and the pro-war group Move America Forward planned a day-long demonstration outside City Hall.

The Rev. Fred Phelps, the anti-gay activist and founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, will be there as well, demonstrating against both the Marines and Code Pink. Members of the Westboro Baptist Church routinely picket at the funerals of American soldiers killed in action.

Code Pink activist Zanne Joi said her group is "supporting the troops by being against war and against recruiting."

"It’s because we care about these people that we are standing up against the war machine," Joi said.

On Jan. 29, the city council approved a resolution that included letters to the Marines advising them that their recruiting station is unwelcome in Berkeley. It also called for an investigation into whether the U.S. military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy for homosexuals violated city anti-discrimination policy.

That decision sparked a nationwide outrage, calls to withhold government funding for the city, and an apology and clarification from Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates.

On Tuesday, the council will hear from Laurie Capitelli and Betty Olds, two council members who are sponsoring a revised resolution that will ask the city not to send a letter to the Marine Corps saying it's unwelcome in Berkeley.

The resolution would reiterate the city's opposition to the Iraq war, while clarifying Berkeley's support of the nation's military servicemembers.

In a joint press statement, Capitelli and Olds said: “We failed to make it clear that while we continue to oppose what we consider an unethical and illegal war in Iraq, at the same time we respect and honor all the brave men and women who are serving or have served in the military … We have erred by not adequately differentiating between the war and the warriors.”

Capitelli and Olds also said in the press statement: “The recommendation to inform the Marine Corps recruiting office that they are not welcome in our city, was insulting, hurtful and wrong.”

UPDATE: It turns out Mayor Tom Bates, who says that the City Council didn't mean to offend the Marines (oh please!!!) has joined Code Pink in their pickets in front of the Marine Recruiting Center in an attempt to harass them and force them out of town. The protestors called our Marines "war criminals":

The council's initial Marine Corps motions prompted a backlash from lawmakers in California's capital, Sacramento, and Washington. There have been calls to withhold state and federal funds — including $2 million in federal money earmarked for ferry service and school lunches, among other things — as well as an apology from Berkeley's mayor.

"Let me be absolutely clear that this is not about the men and women who are serving our country in our armed forces," Mayor Bates said on Feb. 1. "I am a retired U.S. Army Captain and I respect the choice of those who are serving our country.

"However, this community strongly opposes the war in Iraq and the foreign policy of the current administration."

He added: "I understand that there are people across the country that may not agree with this action, but it is the Berkeley City Council's responsibility to represent the will of the people of Berkeley."

That argument didn't fly with California Assemblyman Guy Houston, a Republican, who asked last week that $3.3 million in state transportation funds be suspended until the council rescinds its resolution.

"The Marines, and all of our branches of the military, deserve the honor of our elected officials, not their scorn," Houston said.

At Tuesday night's council meeting, Berkeley politicians will also consider measures that would condemn the construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border as well as a request to Canadian leaders to grant sanctuary for U.S. war resisters.

Berkeley Eases Anti-Marines Stance

This is bullshit! Eliminate Restrictions Period! And You guy's in the Berkeley City Council owe our Troops and APOLOGY!!

UPDATE:

The Berkeley City Council voted early Wednesday to rescind a previous vote that said Marine recruiters are "not welcome in this city," but held tight to its anti-war stance.

I-Reporter Ira Serkes says he saw more people supporting the Marines than the Berkeley City Council.

The vote came after more than three hours of animated citizen input and council debate. More than 100 speakers took turns at the podium. Each speaker was given up to a minute to comment.

In a 7-to-2 vote, the council said it would no longer send a letter to the local Marine Corps Recruiting Station and Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Conway saying recruiters aren't welcome in Berkeley.

Instead, the city is now simply stating it's opposed to the war and the billions spent on it. However, "we recognize the recruiter's right to locate in our city and the right of others to protest or support their presence," the council said.

The council also said it supports and respects the men and women of the armed forces.

Well it's a Victory! A small Victory but a Victory None the less. I still think the Berkeley City Council owes our Marine's an APOLOGY!

We haven't done it in a long time but I say arrest anyone who interferes with military recruitment in that town under the Sedition Act of 1918:

Section 3- "...and whoever when the United States is at war...shall willfully obstruct or attempt to obstruct the recruiting or enlistment services of the United States...shall be punished by a fine of not more than $10,000 or the imprisonment for not more than twenty years, or both."

Their actions amount to nearly treason, and they should have to pay for it. What a disgrace that city is to a country full of patriots and heroes.

Code pink is a cutesy way of really saying "Pinko". No suprise here really. Berkeley U. has been turning out pinkos for many, many years with teachings such as "better red than dead" coming from their idiot tanks! Even "Democrat" is too kind a label for them. All these crazies should be made to live under Sharia law for awhile. The only freedom they would have then would be freedom from their head!

I just have a few questions: Do you think it is acceptable to find military recruiters on, or near, most American colleges?? Do you think it is normal that many young Americans enroll in a military corp because they would not be able to pay for college otherwise, and not because of their convictions?? I have nothing against recruitment offices, but I really think that it is inhuman to try to take advantage of the one most unfair education system in the world to recruit the smart and hopeful American youth. War can only destroy their spirits; just talk to anyone who has ever served in a war...and who is not sadistic of course...

Farewell.

Yann,

They are not only in Colleges but in high schools also.

These young adult's have a choice. They can join, or not. Most do NOT join to pay for college, most join to get the training and they know what is in store for them if war breaks out. It's THEIR CHOICE!

My youngest son has already been to Iraq and back and his spirit isnt broken. I dont have to go far to talk to a Soldier.

However my son was sadistic before he ever went in the Army lol

I wouldnt have done this post if I didnt believe it acceptable for recruitment stations to be on, in, or around high schools and/or colleges.

Anon,

Your figures are way off, 67,000 TERRORISTS have been ELIMINATED by our Marines.

That's a whole lot less than Saddam eliminated innocent people.

It seems like we the people are whining over the Marines hurt feelings and ego's.

You remember the Marine's right? The ones who have given you the right to spew you filth and rear your ugly head?

Someone put you back in your cage!!

I wouldn't mind if we just used Berkley for target practice for the Marines but the brass wouldn't go for that.Sides them jarheads couldn't hit the side of the barn unless they had a swabbie showing him how to do it anyways.

As far as having their feelings hurt by some moron backstbber city council in California, I think the Marines can handle it, they're pretty tough as things go. It's me and the rest of America they have been offended with their despicable and disrespectful actions. I hope the Marines pull out of Berkley the day before California falls into the Pacific because we'd miss the Marines but not you California ankle grabbin losers.

Did the council rescind Code Pinko's permission slips? If not, nothing has changed.

If I was a recruit, I would get some civilian CS gas, spray it on myself, and then force my way through the crowd chained to the door. It would take a long time and I wouldn't try TOO hard. Wouldn't want to offend them.
I think the Marine recruiter would take me on the spot.

Just a thought. If you catch a child misbehaving, do you not spank them because they stopped acting up? Because you caught them? No, of course not. You spank them to reinforce the lesson.

That said, the Semper Fi Act should still be enforced.
