REP. RANGEL D-NY WILL SEEK TO REINSTATE MILITARY DRAFT

Rangel Calls For Reinstating Military Draft

WASHINGTON -- Americans would have to sign up for a new military draft after turning 18 if the incoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee has his way.

Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., said Sunday he sees his idea as a way to deter politicians from launching wars and to bolster U.S. troop levels insufficient to cover potential future action in Iran, North Korea and Iraq.

"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way," Rangel said.

Rangel, a veteran of the Korean War who has unsuccessfully sponsored legislation on conscription in the past, said he will propose a measure early next year.

In 2003, he proposed a measure covering people age 18 to 26. This year, he offered a plan to mandate military service for men and women between age 18 and 42; it went nowhere in the Republican-led Congress.

Democrats will control the House and Senate come January because of their victories in the Nov. 7 election.

At a time when some lawmakers are urging the military to send more troops to Iraq, "I don't see how anyone can support the war and not support the draft," said Rangel, who also proposed a draft in January 2003, before the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

Rangel, the next chairman of the House tax-writing committee, said he worried the military was being strained by its overseas commitments.

"If we're going to challenge Iran and challenge North Korea and then, as some people have asked, to send more troops to Iraq, we can't do that without a draft," Rangel said.

He said having a draft would not necessarily mean everyone called to duty would have to serve. Instead, "young people (would) commit themselves to a couple of years in service to this great republic, whether it's our seaports, our airports, in schools, in hospitals," with a promise of educational benefits at the end of service.

Graham said he believes the all-voluntary military "represents the country pretty well in terms of ethnic makeup, economic background."

Repeated polls have shown that about seven in 10 Americans oppose reinstatement of the draft and officials say they do not expect to restart conscription.

Outgoing Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld told Congress in June 2005 that "there isn't a chance in the world that the draft will be brought back."

Yet the prospect of the long global fight against terrorism and the continuing U.S. commitment to stabilizing Iraq have kept the idea in the public's mind.

The military drafted conscripts during the Civil War, both world wars and between 1948 and 1973. An agency independent of the Defense Department, the Selective Service System trains, keeps an updated registry of men age 18-25 _ now about 16 million _ from which to supply untrained draftees that would supplement the professional all-volunteer armed forces.

Rangel and Graham appeared on "Face the Nation" on CBS.

Well all you young people that were watching MTV, the "Vote or Die" Puff Daddy group or whatever you call yourselves. GUESS WHAT? You're joining to the Military whether YOU like it or not!! Thank's to YOU'RE vote for the "Democrat" Party! We have just under 4 million Troops spread out all over the World and here at home SO WHY DO WE NEED THE FRIGGEN DRAFT? Didnt Charlie Rangel run on a platform of "Not pulling this crap again"? Another Democrat lie. They are already mounting. Charlie Rangel has to be the most dangerous in this bunch of Liberal Lunatic's (Although it is getting harder to tell which one is more dangerous) and has pleged he will seek to re-instate the Draft when he is sworn in. EVERYONE that is serving right now said "Send Me", enlistment rates, and re-enlistment rates are at all time high's and Ol Charlie want's more? Better hope President Bush can stop this madness!! So this is the Democrat's Idea For Taking The Country In A "New Direction"? I have a better idea, IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT!!!

We have an ALL Volunteer Military dufuss we DONT need the draft!

Even if President Bush decides to send more troops we have millions, we dont need a draft.

And Charlie Rangel promised he wouldnt pull this crap again.

Yes we Love the Military enough to know that every Soldier serving said "Send Me". And we support them to the fullest. A draft is showing you think the forces we have today are incompetant and cant handle the job.

You just showed how much you despise the Military!

Rangel tried this with a GOP Congress and failed so he is airing it out again to play his usual race card. This time it may get through a Dem House but most likely not the Senate and absolutly not past Bush because of the VETO stamp. But Rangel will get the racsist headlines he desires out of it.

This ought to be fun to watch anyway. Is Charlie going to propose that women be included in the draft and if not why not? I think they ought to include women and say as soon as you complete boot camp we're gonna put a M-16 in you mitts and send ya right to the front lines. Let's see how many soccer moms and saftey moms go for that. No college differments
either. Everyone registers, everyone goes except turncoats like John Kerry.

Maybe they'll let me come back as a drill instructor, I'd do that.

I remember that, yes he did try and it failed. We dont even need a draft! Where on earth are we going to send these drafted troops? If we need 20,000 more we have them anyway so why would we even consider a draft?
I wonder what the Troops are thinking over in Iraq and Afghanistan about all this? And other places they are stationed at throughout the World. They must think the Country has gone bonkers while they have been gone.

DONT WORRY TROOPS IT'S ONLY THE DEMOCRAT'S THAT HAVE GONE HAYWIRE AS USUAL!

We have roughly 4.2 million Troops spread out all over the World and here at home SO WHY DO WE NEED THE FRIGGEN DRAFT?--Marie's TC

Can you direct me to evidence for that 4.2 million figure? Where did you get that figure? Did you fact check it before you blogged it? I've been to two sites that give the number at approx. 1.4 million active duty and appox. 2.7 total and I've given the link. Where's your link to back up your claim?

From Wikipedia:

Approximately 1.4 million personnel are currently on active duty in the military with an additional 1,259,000 personnel in the seven reserve components (456,000 of whom are in the Army and Air National Guard).[3]

Total armed forces 2,685,713 (Ranked 2nd)
Active troops 1,426,713 (Ranked 2nd)
Total troops 2,685,713 (Ranked 7th)

Source: http://tinyurl.com/9uz7o

258,000 army soldiers are serving in 120 countries.

Source:

http://www.army.mil/operations/

Gen. Abizaid testified before the US Senate last week that the army lacks the troop strength to meet all of its assignments, which would include sending more troops to Iraq.

If we had 4.2 million, as you claim, why on earth would he have said that?

You are obviously out of your mind with that stat. Please back it up or scrub it from your post. Or do you like to misinform your readers?

I don't know about those wikipedia numbers because of wikipedia's built in innaccuracies and for some reason the defense link from DoD has been down all morning. Even the CIA only gives amount of males fit for service annually as a little over 2 million (half of what wikipedia claims)

Either way the numbers of the troops are far below what is required for our goal of world domination. When we get these new recruits and get them trained it won't be long until they are eating plenty of trans fats and guzzling down hyper caffeine drinks in places like Shanghai and Pyongang, all thanks to super patriots like Charlie Rangel. Ooooorah drop down and give me 50.

JG,

I may be off some but I tallied up the Active Duty, New Recruits (Which I dont suppose count yet but I included them because they will soon) and Civilian DOD workers who are also ready to go at a moment's notice, This was Army, Navy, Marine's, Air Force, and Coast Guard. But actual Active Duty at this moment, if you subtract the other two fall just under 3 million. 2.6 million something or another but when you include the other two it goes to to 3.7 million so I might as well say 4 million.
But if you include the ones who have come home and are civilians unless called back up I'm not even sure we could calculate that number at all!
And I didnt even add the Air National Guard and probably left out a whole bunch they didnt have listed on the Centcom site!

But like you said, Hey when the Draft starts half the Country will be in Battle Dress Uniform before it's over!!

We will be ready for World Domination By then!

Thank's Charlie!!

The same thing will happen the last time this piece of garbage tried starting the draft. IT FAILED. And if I am not mistaking,RANGEL VOTED AGAINST IT.
He promised in his re-election campaign he would not reintroduce the draft. Typical politician and lies to get his own agenda across.
This is why I voted for no incumbents or used the write-in option.

You know Pennsy you're right. Charlie Rangel introduced the damn bill to reinstitute the draft then he voted against it. I forgot all about that. I'm sitting here chuckling about that but I'll tell you it's scary because Mr Rangel is now going to be one of the most powerful men in Washinton DC.

Well I agree completely Penn.

I just wish you were in Rangel's district when you voted though lol

I just hope this put's the fear of God into those young people who came out to vote for the Democrat's, how easy it must be for them to take thier freedom's away from them for no reason. Or for an uncalled for reason. And how they ran on false promises just to win, that they are backing away from now.

Maybe next time they will remember "Hey They Lied To Us Last Time" and wont forget this episode if Rangel does get this thing up for a vote.

I posted something simular on my blog and encouraged everyone to write you legislators on this.
Tell them that you feel a draft is unneeded for any of your personal reasons.
I am studying the 13th amendment right now to see if a draft follows under this amendment.
It is critical, because there are disagreements on both sides if conscription applies to the 13th amendment.

Penn,

There must be a way President Bush can stop this crap!

He is the Commander-In-Cheif of the Armed Forces and I bet he has ALL the authority to stop some nonsense like this.

I dont think they can override the President on this one. And he sure as heck isnt on board for this crap.
