THE United States and its allies thwarted an al-Qaeda plot after the September 11 attacks to use bombs hidden in shoes to breach the cockpit door of an airplane and fly it into the tallest building in Los Angeles, US President George W. Bush said.
"The plot was derailed in early 2002 when a South-East Asian nation arrested a key al-Qaeda operative," Mr Bush said in a speech.
Last October, the Bush administration had disclosed a plot to attack targets on the US West Coast using hijacked planes, saying this was among 10 disrupted al-Qaeda plots, but Mr Bush provided more details.
He referred to the plot as targeting the Liberty Tower in Los Angeles, but White House aides afterward said Mr Bush had meant to say the intended target was the city's Library Tower.
Mr Bush said that in October 2001, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the September 11 attacks that year, had set in motion a plot for another attack inside the United States using shoe bombs to hijack an airplane and fly it into the tallest building on the West Coast.
Rather than use Arab hijackers as in the September 11 attack, Mohammed "sought out young men from South-East Asia whom he believed would not arouse as much suspicion," Mr Bush said.
The operatives trained in Afghanistan and met with Osama bin Laden before beginning their preparations for the attack, said Mr Bush.
"Subsequent debriefings and other intelligence operations made clear the intended target and how al-Qaeda hoped to execute it. This critical intelligence helped our allies capture the ringleaders and other known operatives who had been recruited for this plot," he said.

The President never mentioned if wiretaps were involved, as well he shouldnt.
But I bet they had a part in this.
Anyone who think's the President isnt doing his best to protect the Security Of Our Nation and it's people are blind.
And this is just another reason we cant trust Liberals with our security. They just arent as strong on National Defense as the Republicans.
And I would Love to see proof that I am wrong!

The left will never accept that truth the the President is winning the war on terror and the NSA program as well as other methods of defeating the enemy are working. They are more interested in pursuing their agenda of political destruction at the expense of the entire nation. All for the lust of power in Washington.

I agree Bickle, I have never seen anything like this. The Liberals dont give a rats ass about our National Security, dont have a clue how to handle it, and cant possibly wage a war on terror without turning it into a "Police Action" which was tried while Clinton was in office and we see how well that turned out!
And I think Bush's record speaks for itself since we havent been attacked in 4 and 1/2 years. And now Bush is speaking out on alot of Missions these murderers want to carry out on us and our interests that have been foiled. But thank's to the New York times, our enemy now knows what we are doing. And we will probably have another attack and I will hold the Liberals and the Liberal newspapers personaly responsible if an attack does happen. I think the New York Times commited Treason here and should be prosecuted for it.
Yes all for Political goals. Let Our President have the power to keep us safe no-matter what it takes! Piss on the Liberals they cant handle the job anyway!
Clinton took liberties, Bush is taking yours.
How many liberties have you lost recently Gaygun?
