ACLU Wins Release of Abu Ghraib Abuse Photos
by TChris
The Bush administration's effort to suppress disturbing images of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib has been rejected (once again) by Judge Alvin Hellerstein, who ruled in favor of the ACLU's request for disclosure of the photographs and videos. Freedom of information trumped the government's claim that the nation's image would be tarnished, and that terrorism would be fueled, if the pictures were made public.
[I]n his 50-page ruling, the judge said: "My task is not to defer to our worst fears, but to interpret and apply the law, in this case, the Freedom of Information Act, which advances values important to our society, transparency and accountability in government.
"Our struggle to prevail must be without sacrificing the transparency and accountability of government and military officials," he added.
Judge Hellerstein said America "does not surrender to blackmail, and fear of blackmail is not a legally sufficient argument to prevent us from performing a statutory command.
"Indeed, the freedoms that we champion are as important to our success in Iraq and Afghanistan as the guns and missiles with which our troops are armed."
The government is likely to appeal, if only to seek delay in disclosing the materials.

This is shocking to say the least. And this is a (Clinton Appointed Federal Judge) We DONT need more of the same pictures to be published. Those misguided Soldiers who were responsible for what they did have already been punished. If those pictures get released AGAIN it will do NOTHING more than put our Troops in MORE of Harm's way. Nick Berg already had his head cut off over this episode stated on Zarqowi's website claiming responsibility for it, and possibly carrying out the execution himself! Why do we need more of the same?
I dont know about the rest of you but I am writing every senator, Secretary Rumsfeld, and those who I think may be able to stop this nonsense. If those pictures MUST be released I for one do NOT believe they need to be released while we are at war. If the Public absolutely needs to see these pictures I would strongly urge the Senators, and others in charge, NOT to let the Main Stream Media publish them until we are OUT of Iraq, or the war on terrorism is over!!! I dont want another Soldier to be killed (Including MINE) over the petty Political game the ACLU is playing! It is time to stop the ACLU and thier damaging affects they are having on this Country. Where are the Soldiers families rights on this? Do we not have the right to NOT have our son's and daughter's put in more harm's way because of the ACLU, and the Anti America, Anti-War crowd?

Welcome back my friend. What started out as a semi-ok group when they first started has turned sharpley left!!! They want to take away everything we grew up with, Merry Christmas, Prayer in School, The Bible, etc, the list goes on and on...and now they want to put our Soldiers in the worst kind of danger imagineable! Our Troops dont deserve this no matter what the ACLU thinks people need to see in a time of WAR! I wrote ALL the senators and I am getting some pretty good responses even from those I didnt think I would. WE HAVE TO STOP FUNDING THE ACLU.. I had no idea we even were till I read thier website, Duh!! Stupid me! I dont want to fund a group with my hard earned taxpayer dollars a group I sure as hell dont believe in! Sign the Petition!!
