Tony Blair: No Regrets
Blair blasts critics in final defence of Iraq war
Tony Blair on Monday strongly defended intervening in Iraq for the final time as prime minister before parliament's top scrutiny body.
In a robust farewell performance, Blair insisted ordinary Muslims craved democracy, saying that Islamist terrorists rather than the West were their worst enemy.
He warned that the West would be making a "fundamental mistake" if it gave up defending democracy when threatened with terrorism and slapped down those blaming coalition failures for the sectarian unrest since the March 2003 US-led invasion to topple dictator Saddam Hussein.
And Blair, who steps down next week, admitted that he felt a heavy responsibility for the death toll in Iraq.
"It is so comforting to people to say there was an error made in the planning. Someone didn't spot what was going to go on," he told the House of Commons liaison committee, made up of all the chiefs the lower chamber's scrutiny bodies.
"That is not what has created the problem. What has created the problem is that the people we are fighting have decided to give us a problem.
"What they have decided is that if they can hang on long enough in Iraq, or in Afghanistan, or anywhere else, then we will lose the will."
He said that Islamist militants purporting that Muslims were being oppressed by the West had a "difficult argument to make" if Muslims were being given a free vote for the first time.
"If we end up saying that because these people are committing these acts of terrorism in Iraq or Afghanistan, that we shouldn't have done the removal of Saddam or the removal of the Taliban, then we are making a fundamental mistake about our own future, about security, about the values we should be defending in the world."
Blair stands down on June 27 after a decade in power, leaving a legacy clouded by his decision to support US President George W. Bush in the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Good for you Tony, Doing what's right isnt always popular, but history will come to know you and President Bush got together on this issue of destroying terrorism and you were one of our staunchest supporters and allies and History will remember you and President Bush for looking terrorism straight in the face and saying "NO MORE"! Gonna miss ya Tony. But Britain will still be our staunchest ally :-) Good luck in your future endeavors, maybe President of the EU? :-)

Blair was a libtard on some issues, but had it right when it came to the war on terror. He will be missed in the political arena.
Though a liberal Blair is a class act when it comes to the war and his support not only of The US but of the war effort in general.
He will be missed in that sense. Let's hope his successor is just as strong in support of the war!
Blair is a blatant socialist, but he gets the concept of freedom. He is a rare bird who knew evil where it is and risked everything for the truth. Between him and Howard Down Under, we should never forget their friendship and loyalty
I like the way he told everyone "Up Yours" I'm doing the right thing!
He may have been a libtard, but he was a good libtard, he was'nt "Out There", and he understood the dangers we all face today.
He sure will be missed
I dunno, Marie. Tony Blair seemed to be a good guy, but when the mullahs invited the Royal Marines over for a long weekend in the country, it kinda showed that there are limits to what you can do if you have a bunch of tea-drinking surrender monkeys running the Navy.
Uncle pav said...a bunch of tea-drinking surrender monkeys running the Navy.
Lord Nelson is rolling over in his grave Uncle Pav.The US Navy would have never let our guys down like that. We would of fought off and sunk those Iranian landlubbers.
Marie, Tony Blair did pretty good when it came to the war on terror but his other ideas weren't so good. He was pretty friendly with Der Schlickmeister and tried to pull the wool over the Brits eyes like slick willie did. The Brits have a lot of problems with the muslims living among them and all the libtard socialists that infiltrated their government. I guess we can afford to give him an overall C-. Not bad coming from the the labour party.
"That is not what has created the problem. What has created the problem is that the people we are fighting have decided to give us a problem.
Tony Blair just totally reeks...
...of awesome.
Ha! Word,
You got me on that one, I was wondering until I saw Awesome haha.
While I've never been a supporter of the UK's Labor Party (for obvious reasons), having Blair exit the stage and taking his die-hard anti-terror stance with him may actually help the world in the long run.
How so?
His replacement is a dullard of a caretaker and the Labor Party's grip on the country is slipping. The Tories have vibrant candidates and may actually retake the House of Commons in the next general election, following the wave of backlash against One Worlders and socialists that we've seen in Germany and France.
Between him and Howard Down Under, we should never forget their friendship and loyalty
Here, here, obob!
you're dreaming if you think UK conservatives (tories) will support the war. David Cameron is not a conservative as in US republican party. Sorry Trecmedic, but cameron will manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. The tories just can't get it together.
