Rummy Gives The Media Both Barrels

Rumsfeld Warns Against Appeasement

SALT LAKE CITY-- Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Tuesday the world faces "a new type of fascism" and warned against repeating the pre-World War II mistake of appeasement.

Rumsfeld alluded to critics of the Bush administration's war policies in terms associated with the failure to stop Nazism in the 1930s, "a time when a certain amount of cynicism and moral confusion set in among the Western democracies."

Without explicitly citing Bush critics at home or abroad, he said "it is apparent that many have still not learned history's lessons." Aides to Rumsfeld said later he was not accusing the administration's critics of trying to appease the terrorists but was cautioning against a repeat of errors made in earlier eras.

Speaking to several thousand veterans at the American Legion's national convention, Rumsfeld said that as fascism and Nazism took hold in Europe, those who warned of a coming crisis were ridiculed or ignored. He quoted Winston Churchill as observing that trying to accommodate Hitler was "a bit like feeding a crocodile, hoping it would eat you last."

"I recount this history because once again we face similar challenges in efforts to confront the rising threat of a new type of fascism," he said.

"Can we truly afford to believe that somehow, some way, vicious extremists can be appeased?" he asked.

"Can we truly afford to return to the destructive view that America - not the enemy - is the real source of the world's troubles?"

Rumsfeld spoke to the American Legion as part of a coordinated White House strategy, before the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, to take the offensive against administration critics at a time of doubt about the future of Iraq and growing calls to withdraw U.S. troops.

Addressing the same audience later Tuesday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the Bush administration is countering extremism with hope and democracy, and that history will bear out that strategy.

"If we quit before the job is done, the cost of failure will be severe, indeed immeasurable," Rice said.

"If we abandon the Iraqi people before their government is strong enough to secure the country, we will show reformers across the region that America cannot be trusted to keep its word," she added.

Bush was scheduled to speak here later in the week.

Rumsfeld recalled a string of recent terrorist attacks, from 9/11 to deadly bombings in Bali, London and Madrid, and said it should be obvious to anyone that terrorists must be confronted, not appeased.

"But some seem not to have learned history's lessons," he said, adding that part of the problem is that the American news media have tended to emphasize the negative rather than the positive.

He said, for example, that more media attention was given to U.S. soldiers' abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib than to the fact that Sgt. 1st Class Paul Ray Smith received the Medal of Honor.

He did acknowledge that the U.S. military has its own "bad actors - the ones who dominate the headlines today - who don't live up to the standards of the oath and of our country." But he added that they are a small percentage of the hundreds of thousands of troops who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Those who know the truth need to speak out against these kinds of myths and lies and distortions being told about our troops and about our country," he said.

On Monday, Vice President Dick Cheney and Rumsfeld made separate addresses to the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Reno, Nev.

Rumsfeld made similar arguments in Reno about doubters of the administration's approach to fighting terrorism, saying too many in this country want to "blame America first" and ignore the enemy.

Rumsfeld's remarks ignited angry rebukes from Democrats.

"It's a political rant to cover up his incompetence," said Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., a former Army officer and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Reed said he took particular exception to the implication that critics of Pentagon policies are unpatriotic, citing "scores of patriotic Americans of both parties who are highly critical of his handling of the Department of Defense."

Rep. John Murtha, the hawkish Pennsylvania Democrat who voted in favor of the war but recently called for troops to withdraw, said in a statement: "It's interesting to me that they generalize the support for the war. They're not realistic with the fact that there's no progress."

Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., chimed in that Rumsfeld's remarks were trying to "shoot the messenger" rather than examine failed policy.

Secretary Rumsfeld Asks For Patience In Iraq
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good for you Rummy!!!The enemy has figured out how to get to the people of this Country through the media and they are playing the media like guitar! I have news for Dodd, Murtha, Reed, and the rest of the usual suspects. If spreading Democracy throughout the middle east isnt the best plan for putting an end to this terrorist crap then what is YOUR plan besides waving a white flag and surrendering to the terrorists? Now I already know you Liberals will say "What's Iraq got to do with 9-11"? Let's review this one more time before I get hammered by you vultures, Iraq is A PART of the GLOBAL war on terror! And if you dont think it's GLOBAL ask, Spain, Britain, India, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, etc., these terrorist Lunatics dont give a damn if they kill thier own people what on earth makes ANYONE think we can bargain with them? It's not like we can all have a big World BBQ with these people. I hardly call 3 major elections in Iraq with a higher voter turnout than we have here, a new Constitution, and the removal of the pain in the ass of the middle east "No Progress"! And all this while transforming the Military from fighting the "Cold" war, to fighting the War on Terror. Go Rummy!!!!
It's not hard to manipulate the MSM, all you have to do is come out and say you hate George Bush and they will be all too willing to put the mike in front of you. Then they will give your story credibililty by running it over and over again no matter how innaccurate the story is. The New York Times does this every day.
If you want to know what the talking points for the libs is for the day than go no further than the above the fold story on the front page of the NYTimes.
The libs criticize Rumsfeld but it would not matter who the Secretary of Defense is, the libs would critize him/her in their typical irrational and bitter tirade no matter what.
Good grief, jg, you've just described all of your posts in response to anything I or anyone who disagrees with you--"irrational and bitter."
Hey why the bitterness? Your people, the Repubs got the presidency, Congress and the conservatives are in charge of the Supreme Court.
You should be dancing in the streets instead of whining about all the "power" the liberals have.
Or do you want to control every single venue of power in this country--y'know, like the totalitarian regimes do. Y'know, like Saddam did?
Wassamatta? Don't like Democracy where THE MAJORITY IS SUPPOSED TO RESPECT THE RIGHTS OF THE MINORITY.
In Cuba, there is no opposition.
Seems to me, you'd love to live under Fidel's regime.
He demonizes and even kills his opposition.
Bet that sounds heavenly to you.
He calls the opposition traitors. Sound familiar? Paging Karl Rove, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld!
Bet you're the first one to pound your chest and get a tear in your eye when you hear the Star Spangled Banner.
Dictatorships are one-way streets. Democracy boasts two-way traffic.
"Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear."
REPUBLICANS EXERCISING THEIR RIGHT TO CRITICIZE AN ADMINISTRATION IN A TIME OF WAR. It's the American way!
REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES:
Then-GOP Presidential candidate Governor George W. Bush: According to the Houston Chronicle:
“Bush, in Austin, criticized President Clinton’s administration for not doing enough to enunciate a goal for the Kosovo military action and indicated the bombing campaign might not be a tough enough response. ‘Victory means exit strategy, and it's important for the president to explain to us what the exit
strategy is,’ Bush said.” [Houston Chronicle, 4/9/99]
Then-GOP Presidential candidate Dan Quayle: “What has happened is we have taken a political crisis
and a humanitarian crisis and escalated it into a full military crisis. The handling of the situation in the Balkans reflects the inattention of the Clinton Administration to foreign policy. … You have the same
situation [as Vietnam]. Ambiguity, no stated, clear cut mission and then you are going to have to be there
quite some time.” [Omaha World Herald, 3/28/99]
Then-GOP Presidential candidate Lamar Alexander: “Once we've started bombing we should bomb
aggressively and consistently and for a long time to try and bring Milosevic to the table. But the president needs to tell us the rest of the story. Which is that if we put peace-keeping American forces in Kosovo they are going to be there for a long time, maybe as long as they have been in Korea, 25 to 50 years; and if they are harmed as they were in Somalia, then we are going to put other forces in there to make sure
that they are safe.” [Fox News, “Hannity & Colmes,” 3/26/99]
Then-GOP Presidential candidate Pat Buchanan: “And what are we doing bombing and attacking this
tiny country that has never attacked the United States to rip away from them a province that does not belong to us? I believe it is an unjust war. I think we have failed in our strategic objectives, and it is now
becoming basically no longer a war for Kosovo but a war to save NATO’s credibility and NATO’s face.
And that does not justify sending in an army of 100,000 American ground troops into the Balkans.” [NBC,
“Meet the Press,” 4/25/99]
Then-GOP Presidential candidate Gary Bauer: “The President has not demonstrated he’s got a way to
solve a crisis or conflict that literally has been raging since 1350. … They treated each other with an incredible amount of inhumanity. That’s a terrible thing. It offends our conscience. But how in the world are American boys flying over Kosovo dropping bombs going to somehow stop something that’s been going on for 600 years?” [Des Moines Register, 4/17/99]
REPUBLICAN LEADERS IN THE HOUSE AND SENATE:
GOP House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL): “Many may question the path that has taken us to this
point. I have my own questions about the long term strategy of this campaign.” [Dallas Morning News,
3/25/99]
Then-House Majority Whip Tom Delay (R-TX): “Mr. Speaker, this is a very difficult speech for me to
give, because I normally, and I still do, support our military and the fine work that they are doing. But I cannot support a failed foreign policy. … But before we get deeper embroiled into this Balkan quagmire,I think that an assessment has to be made of the Kosovo policy so far. President Clinton has never
explained to the American people why he was involving the U.S. military in a civil war in a sovereign nation, other than to say it is for humanitarian reasons, a new military/foreign policy precedent. … Was it
worth it to stay in Vietnam to save face? What good has been accomplished so far? Absolutely nothing.”
[Congressional Record, “Removal of United States Armed Forces from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia,” 4/28/99]
Then-House Majority Whip Tom Delay (R-TX): The deployment of U.S. military forces in Kosovo is
“just another bad idea in a foreign policy without a focus.” [Editorial, Saint Paul Pioneer Press (Minnesota),
3/17/99]
Then-House Majority Whip Tom Delay (R-TX): “America needs to quickly change directions and leave behind this chilling comedy of errors that has defined our foreign policy.” [Copley News Service,
3/22/99]
Then-House Majority Whip Tom Delay (R-TX): “First of all, it's using NATO for the first time to
attack a sovereign nation. … It’s also one more adventure in a whole line of adventures of failed foreign
policy.” [“Fox News Sunday,” 3/14/99]
Then-House Majority Whip Tom Delay (R-TX): “I had the utmost confidence in President Bush. He
had laid the groundwork, and our national interest in the Middle East was clear. In the gulf we had a country that was invaded [Kuwait], and an oil interest to defend. … [In the Balkans] we have a president I don’t trust, who has proven my reason for not trusting him: had no plan. We have a civil war that was falsely described as a huge humanitarian problem, when in comparison to other places, it was nothing.”
[Washington Post, 5/4/99]
Then-Senate Assistant Majority Leader Don Nickles (R-OK): “I think he’s [Clinton] gotten us into a mess. I don’t think you can bomb a country into signing a peace agreement.” [Washington Post, 4/13/99]
Then-Senate Assistant Majority Leader Don Nickles (R-OK): “The Administration, and NATO as a
whole, greatly miscalculated the response Slobodan Milosevic would have to a bombing campaign. As I
predicted, the Administration has escalated what was guerilla warfare into a much more serious conflict. The bombings have unleashed an evil reign and resulted in a humanitarian disaster.” [Senator Don Nickles,
Press Release, 4/21/99]
Then-Senate Assistant Majority Leader Don Nickles (R-OK): “I want NATO to be credible, but for
crying out loud, when you are so arrogant to say here is our wisdom, here is this accord, we determined
this is in your best interest and you must sign it or else we are going to bomb you--I stated in my speech on the bombing resolution that I don't think you can bomb a country into submission or into signing an agreement.” [Congressional Record, Senator Don Nickles, 5/3/99]
CRITICISMS FROM OTHER REPUBLICANS:
Senator James Inhofe (R-OK): “(P)resident [Clinton] has decimated our ability to defend ourselves.”
[USA Today, 4/5/99]
Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH): “I don’t believe that a ground war in Kosovo using American troops is
going to be very successful.” [NBC, “Meet the Press,” 4/18/99]
Representative Randy “Duke” Cunningham (R-CA): “This is the most inept foreign policy in the
history of the United States.” [Washington Times, 4/29/99]
Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN): “This is President Clinton’s war, and when he falls flat on his face,that’s his problem.” [New York Times, 5/4/99]
By EVERY media outlet, fortunately some of them get caught, Dan Rather, the fake pictures by Rueters and The Assosiated Press of all people, however I must say at least they have apologised and are looking into the Doctored picture episode so I guess they deserve some credit for that, but Dan Rather never did apologise.
I know even if Rummy wasnt there they would be all over the next one in a time of War!
There is a problem with this statement, we werent at war when President Clinton was in office!
And by the looks of it everything you posted was from 1999, BEFORE we were attacked and were at War.
I believe in free speach of those critical of any President's policy's, it is the American way!
But you have to admit, they do go hysterical over Bush while we are at War!
Can you imagine Roosevelt having to put up with this nonsense?
Ohter Countries see our media all over the world and no wonder they think we are all nuts.
Yep, the enemy has our number alright, and they are going to play it for all it's worth.
There is a difference between criticism and downright treasonous behavior. Criticism is something that is done to help improve on a situation. Treason is something liberals do because they have this blind and irrational hatred for George Bush. I know plenty of libs and the ones I know are nice people. I would not want any of them to hold office making decisions unless it is the color of the drapes and paint in my living room. Libs do have some artistic uses but letting them make important decisions on the defense of the nation is just not one of them. Mrs. Green why the extreme and irrational hate for George Bush? Why can't you and your friends be a contribution instead of being a dragging anchor? What use are you as a citizen if you will not participate in your own defense. In a court of law if you cannot contribute to your own defense you are considered incompetent. That sounds about right.
Purple, is a ranting racist I see. Bigotry is unbecoming and my ancestors fought to stop bigotry and slavery. Yep, I'm a Yankee, Great Granddaughter of a 116th Pennsylvania Irish Brigade Trooper. Great Grandfather was a real American and wasn't ashamed of it. The whole Camel thing was an email that was sent to me Geez!
If I were a racist I would have my blog plastered with pictures of Mohammed all over it like some others do!
Your Government? It's yours too Dufuss! And you never seem to get it, the middle east is being held hostage to those that wont let them have Democracy and Freedom.
Think about it, spreading Democracy is the ONLY way to set these people free, and put an end to this terrorism nightmare, they want to get on the Internet, the women want to wear Dresses instead of Burka's, most of them are NOT terrorists, they are ready to move along into the 21st Century but are being held back to a 3rd world Country state of mind.
Have you ever talked to an Iraqi? I have, I have a friend on my buddy list that is Kurdish, he is the sweetest guy, all he want's is to have a decent life with his wife and children. Saddam killed most of his family. He constantly thank's the US through me for getting rid of Saddam. I feel for those people deeply. And guess what? I sent him the Camel joke and he LAUGHED!!!
I still think Mom's comment about tablecloths is so funny. Those people would slit your throat or blow up your family though so who's the racist. Purple racist hates me because I appear to be white. I dislike purple racist because the person is a vulgar jerk and it really doesn't matter what race they are.
Why would anyone listen to anything else you posted? This is beyond the pale. Enjoy your victimhood and labeling your fellow Americans as traitors. Pathetic.
Give me hard evidence for you to make this claim.
You never can. I've asked for hard evidence before on other statements you've made and you say nothing.
Because all you've got is rhetoric and nothing else.
Heh.
Typical of right-wingers. They accuse their fellow Americans of the most hateful crimes with no evidence.
It's actually funny. You are very funny, jg. And bitter.
First you tell JG "Why would anyone listen to anything else you post" then you ask her for "Hard Evidence" as if she is suppose to mail you a CD or something!
Which is it?
Does she need to draw you a map or explain it to you as if you are a 5 year old?
As for labeling our fellow Americans as traitors, those that wish harm on the American people by taking away the basic tools needed to fight this war on terror, YOUR PARTY, they are!
Talk about Pathetic!
Exactly what tools have the Democrats taken away from Donald Rumsfeld? Evidence please.
And exactly how have the Democrats changed Rumsfeld's policies in conducting the Iraq war? Evidence, please--not your usual wild accusations and inflamatory allegations.
Back this up with specifics on the "tools" the Democrats have taken away from Donald Rumsfeld in carrying out the war in Iraq.
Ok where do I start, The Liberals want to take away the tools we need to monitor phone calls comming into this Country and out of this Country "To and From" Al-Quaida, they want to take away the tools we need to track the money being sent to terrorist groups, "Wire Taps" and "Data Mining", and then we have Harry Reid saying "We killed the Patriot act", they want to take away certain provisions of that, and the ACLU lawsuits are proof enough of this and statements made by Senators and Congressman.
I dont know what to tell you if you think these are inflamatory allegations, but I have read and seen for myself on TV the Senators and Congressman touting taking away these tools as some kind of Victory!!
If you expect me to send you a Tape or CD of them saying all this and voting against it, I am not going to do it. Remember Google is your best friend, well sometimes!
